Floating parades anchor south Florida's holiday season

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Diversity, peace on Earth and a milestone will be
some of the themes greeting viewers who line up to see
this year's bevy of holiday boat parades.
The parades will mark the first of the new century,
and organizers say excitement is building.
Festivities kick off on Dec. 2 with the launching of
the Fifth Annual Holiday Boat Parade of the Palm
Beaches. Other processions will take place in the
upcoming weeks throughout Boynton-Delay Beach,
Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach.
Boca Raton's parade, now entering its 25th year,
celebrates its silver anniversary on Dec. 9 with a sailor
sweepstakes. The new feature will be open to all
participants who will be eligible to win various prizes
ranging from a custom oil painting of the winner's
vessel to marina resort vacations.
"The purpose of this sweepstakes is to enable all
participants to have a chance at winning a prize," said
Jennifer Ouvrard, director of special events for the
Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, which is
organizing the parade. "Not every person can afford to
decorate the winning entry, but we hope to encourage
allboaters tojoin in on this festive andnautical occasion."
Officials planning Fort Lauderdale's annual

and Italy, she said.
There will also be a Hanukkah boat and a Kwanza
boat, Tate said.
Officials are anticipating the entries to be a good
mix of old timers and newcomers, with many the
boaters getting into the spirit by adding more lights.
Organizers are also trying to encourage owners to use
more sound so that people on the shoreline will be
entertained, Tate said.
More newcomers are also signing up for the 38th
Annual Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade, taking
place Dec. 17. The procession's theme will be "Peace on
Earth."
"We're trying to target ourselves more to the
pleasure boat owners," said Kathy Keleher, special
events for the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of
Commerce, which is coordinating the parade, billed as
the oldest floating holiday procession in the United
States.
Because there is no entry fee, organizers say the
parade is more accessible for individual boat owners.
"We would especially like to see more of the spectator
boats participate," Keleher said. -
Increasing the number of spectator boats in the
parade would help alleviate gridlock that has been
caused over the past two years by craft that anchor in
Lake Santa Barbara, she said.
"Because that's where our parade begins, the
increase in spectator boats have made it.difficult for the
entries to maneuver," Keleher said.
She advises boaters to hang holiday lights on their

This year's Winerfest's theme is "The World on Water,"
selected because of the area's diversity. Boats are
expected to reflect a variety of cultures.

Winterfest boat parade on Dec. 16 intend to bring the
world to the feet of folks standing along the shoreline
and watching from spectator boats. This year's parade
theme, "The World on Water," will promote South
Florida's many cultures, said Amy Tate, event director
for Winterfest.
"We're asking people to decorate their boats to
reflect their heritage," Tate said. Some of the countries
expected to be represented include Polynesia, Ireland

vessels, dress up in a holiday outfit and participate in
the parade.
"You don't have to have 20 million lights," Keleher
said. "You canhave a party on yourboa t with everyone
dressed in a costume, or just wearing Santa hats."
She recalled last year, when three smallboats headed
up the tail end of the procession. At the last minute
entries were encouraged to be in the parade by marine
patrol officers, who noticed the lighted vessels and
encouraged the owners to be part of the event.
"They had a great time," Keleher said.

The lineup
Below is a chronological listing of holiday boat
parades in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
As always, people watching the processions from
land or in spectator boats are advised to take certain
safety precautions so that the evening goes smoothly.
These include anchoring early, staying clear of entries,
no drinking while boating, and respecting all speed
limit signs and markers.

Kids are the best

reason to gi

By JEFF HARRELL
Waterfront News Columnist
I've never been one to jump on the
Christmas bandwagon with a billboard
strapped to my back that reads, "Give
Give Give."
The holidays have gotten so out of
hand that not only have we totally
forgotten their true meaning, we label
December as the month of giving while
we spend the next 11 months walking
around with the spirit of Scrooge
dancing in our hypocritical heads.
Normally, I find it difficult to
trumpet other people's giving efforts
when. Christmas is used merely as an
excuse.
But this is a good cause.
On Dec. 8 the Offshore Power Boat
Racing Association will sponsor a toy
drive for Kids In Distress at the Baja
Beach Club, 3339 N. Federal Highway,
in Fort Lauderdale.
According to Dottie VanKirk,
treasurer of the organization, "any
unwrapped toys for any-aged child"
will be accepted.
But that's no reason to limit yourself
to donating toys.
Wilton Manors-based Kids In
Distress cares for boys and girls up to 10
years old who have been abandoned by
their parents. When these kids hop on
Santa Claus's knee, they:are more likely
to ask for a mommy or a daddy instead
of a pickup truck or even a Nintendo
game.
And sincemany of them entered the
shelter wearing long-sleeve shirts to hide
the bruises their parents inflicted, these
kids would love nothing more than a
shirt with a brand-name so they can fit
in with other, non-abused kids.
Some of the kids aren't old enough
to know about Christmas, let alone make

up a list for Kris Kringle. Which means
the shelter also needs clean sheets for
regular size beds and cribs, bedding
linens, and other household items such
as pots and pans.
"Our kids don't always ask for
toys," says Mimi Haley at Kids In
Distress. "We're trying to lessen up on
toys and do more for the houses."
And donations do not have to be
limited to Dec.8, or even the month of
December.
Unwanted, rejected kids enter the
shelter throughout the year. Without
Christmas, it's scary to think about
how totally un-giving this world would
be.
"We have a special door open at
Christmas to receive goodies," Haley
says. "We have volunteers and elves,
that's how we survive.
"Unfortunately, it's at Christmas
when the whole world is thinking of
us, but we do get to stock up for the
other 11 months."
So, for those who wish to donate,
here's what I suggest.
Show up at the Baja Beach Club on
Dec. 8 and donate toys for the kids;just
be sure that the toys are safe.
If you don't want to donate a toy,
bring clean clothing, baby things such
as crib sheets, bedding items or any
other household knick-knacks that
might help a kid get through the day.
To make donations to Kids In
Distress, call Haley at (954) 390-7620,
or the Offshore Power Boat Racing
Association at (954) 441-4981 and ask
for Michelle Schmidt.
Of course, the one thing the kids
don't have is a real home, including a
mom and a dad who loves them
enough to raise them.

the courts that the failure of any vessel equipped with
radar to use it or maintain it in effective working order
can be found to be a basis for fault pursuant to a
collision.
Surprisingly, a simple compass has never been
legally mandated for vessels. It probably seems too
obvious. But I was once told a story about the Coast

that kids need

So, besides the items you donate, you might want
to offer up a prayer for them as well.
It's certain these kids need everything they can get

runabout who was lost at sea, beyond the sight of land.
The Coast Guardsman suggested the boater take a
heading with his compass and proceed to travel due
west. The boater then replied that he had no compass
on board. According to the story, it took all of the Coast
Guardsman's fortitude to keep from suggesting to this
boater that he might not be clever enough to live!
The lesson is this: Becoming a smart boater is
better than receiving expensive boating equipment.

As a matter of fact, a really great holiday present could
be a boating safety course that will show you the best
way to use the stuff you've already got on the vessel.
Sounds almost as good as a hug, doesn't it?
Happy Holidays!!
