Year-round boat traffic keeps waterways hopping

More boaters expected to
continue to crowd wet streets
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Congestion. Accidents. Near misses. Sounds
like a typical day on South Florida's roads.
But pavement is not the only place where tie-
ups and mishaps occur. Many of the region's
waterways are equally crowded with boaters, who
often encounter the same frustrations and dangers
on water as they do in their vehicles on land.
Topping the list of most packed Broward
Port Everglades and the
Hillsboro Inlet are
particularly busy because
both provide the only two
access points in Broward that
lead out into the ocean

waterways are Port Everglades, the Hillsboro Inlet,
just about anywhere on the Intracoastal Waterway
and the 17th Street Causeway, according to law
enforcement agencies.
Fort Lauderdale's New River and South Lake in
Hollywood were also cited as brimming with boaters
and personal watercraft users.
Port Everglades and the Hillsboro Inlet are
particularly busy because both provide the only
two access points in Broward that lead out into the
ocean, said Broward Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol
Sgt. Larry Whitford.
Marine patrol officers answer calls to the
Hillsboro Inlet on a weekly basis to help boaters,
Whitford said.

Port Everglades: The waterway is considered tops among South Florida's busiest because it's one of only two
access points in Broward that leads out to the ocean.

"If you deviate from the marked channel, there's a
shallow reef on the south side of the inlet," he said. "At
certain tides, the water is only a foot deep. There's a
fair amount of boats that hit the reef. Sometimes you
can have two vessels on the same weekend."
Port Everglades has its share of hazards too. "There
are a lot of large ocean-going vessels such as tankers

and cruise ships," Whitford said. "These vessels
have very limited steering capability and visibility."
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission Capt. Sam Cory sees no let up in the
amount of traffic hitting our local wet streets. If
anything, the numbers just keep rising, he said.

Working man's boat show finds a niche in mass market

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer -
The South Florida Boat Show may not be the biggest
expo on the block and there isn't a mega-yacht in sight.
But that's alright with Brad G. Michael. He and his
partner, Thomas Cowden, want it that way.
"We're not the world's biggest show and we don't
claim to be," Michael said.
"We've been called the affordable boat show and
the working man's boat show. We don't have the mega-
yachts. But we do have what 90 percent of America buys
and uses."
Michael's idea to start an expo where local dealers
can sell end-of-year models has proved successful for
everyone involved. Over the years, the event has more
than doubled in size, growing from 120,000 square feet of
exhibit space and 10,000 visitors to 250,000 square feet
and 25,000 attendees.
The upcoming show, now in its seventh year, will
take place June 2-6 at the Miami Beach Convention
Center. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children
ages 7to 14. Kids ages 6 and younger willbe admitted at
no charge.
Show times are 4 to 10 p.m. June 2; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
June; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.June 4; and 4 to 10p.m.June 5 and.

display. Vessels from major manufacturers'Will bepriced
under $5,000 to more than $250,000. On-site financing
will be available.
"These shows are there for one reason and that's to
sell boats," Michael said. "July 1 is the end of the model
year for most manufacturers. The public gets their best
deal of the year because the dealers are looking to move
out their inventory and make room to introduce the new
lines."
Personal watercraft and marine-related items such
as nautical accessories, fishing tackle, dive gear and
electronics will also be sold.
Other activities will include free seminars, casting
net demonstrations, a trout fishing tank, kiddie bumper
boats and a drawing where one grand prize winner will
receive an Angler 170 Fisherman.
It fakes Michael and Cowden six months to set up the
show, which they run through their Pompano Beach-
based company, Marine Industries Unlimited.
Michael, who earned an economics degree from the
University of Maryland in 1987, founded the business in
March, 1989. Prior to going out onhis own, he was selling
boats at boat shows and had been a sales mariager for a
promotions company.
Eventually, Michael felt he could do his own boat
show better and for less money. After rounding up
support from several marine-related businesses in Dade
and Broward counties, he held his first expo at the
Coconut Grove Convention Center.
It proved to be very successful. Michael stayed there

for two years, until he outgrew the facility and moved to
Miami Beach. In 1993, Cowdenjoined Marine Industries
Unlimited and became partners with Michael.
"[Cowden] is a very hard worker," Michael said.
"He knows a lot about the industry. He also sees things
the same way I do. It's been a good match."
At the Miami Beach Convention Center, the expo
will take up two halls, which accounts for one half of the
facility's main floor. Michael doesn't expect it to get any
larger.
"We've grown as much as we're going to grow," he
said. "I like the show being small. It's more manageable.
People pull right in front, park and walk about 100 feet."
Besides, there's not enough dealers in Dade and
Broward to let us use a third hall, he said.
Unlikethebig, international shows, which are largely
supported by major manufactures, the South Florida
Boat Show is supported by local boat dealers, Michael
said.
"This is a chance for them to put their dealership on
display," he said. "They can average anywhere from
$60,000 to $2 million in sales."
Steve Grisham, owner of Performance Marine in
Miami, said the boat show allows the local dealers a
chance to shine.
"At the international boat show, there are dealers
from all over the world," Grisham said.- "The local
businesses tend to get lost in the crowd. When people
buy from someone at this show, they are buying from
someone in their own back yard. It's not a sales crew that
picks up its tent and leaves town after the show."

Tall ships to grace Port ofMiami before sailing up East Coast
Miami Dade County middle
school students assist in
eight-day training voyage
aboard tall ship

public schools reaped the maritime chance-of-a-
lifetime. Available from Commercial News Providers" -

Over the past two months, the kids virtually piloted
a tall ship via CD-ROM, then practiced-actual nautical
skills on an 83-foot schooner. They tied knots, pivoted
rigging lines around the ship's wooden pinrail pegs
and steered the stately, Heritage ofMiamiII, on Biscayne
Bay to prepare for OpSail Miami 2000.
The kids were chosen out of 800 Miami-Dade
middle school students hailing from 44 public schools.
Then after flying to San Juan, Puerto Rico in May,
the group of 24 students tugged on their lines, unfurling
a 13,000 square foot canvas sail from its rigging on the
179-foot wooden ship HMS Rose, and set sail on the
turquoise waters off San Juan.
They are assisting in a rigorous eight-day training
voyage that concludes with their arrival, likely framed
by the morning sun, at Port of Miami to kickoff the
festivities of OpSail Miami 2000, June 7-10.
Operation Sail- the organization that has inspired
the world with visions of tall sailing ships will
feature a forest of tall ships from around the globe to
salute the new millennium.
Billed as the world's largest maritime event, seven
ports along the East'Coast will be visited on a voyage
of goodwill. They include: Miami, Norfolk, Baltimore,

It's a boat; it's-a plane; no, it's a called a Cosmic Muffin

~bt~~E~LUI- -

Editor's Note: "Wet Streets" is a regu-
lar series that explores neighborhoods and
landmarks along south Florida's water-
front. We welcome your ideas. Please
email suggestions to h2onews@aol.com
or fax (954) 524-9464; or write, Wet
Streets, Waterfront News, 1523 S.
Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 33316.

By JEFF HARRELL
Waterfront News Writer
The tall sun-swept man erfierged from
the open door of the hot-dog shaped boat
docked-on Fort Lauderdale's Middle River
just long enough to identify himself.
Dave Drimmer?
"The one and only," Drimmer says.
The introduction was appropriate.
After all, Drimmer has owned and lived
aboard the "one and only" floating oddity
since he bought and began refurbishing it
in 1981.
What makes Drimmer's boat, which
is docked just off Sunrise Boulevard be-
hind the La Tavernetta restaurant on
Northeast 20th Avenue, so odd is that it
used to be a Boeing 307 Stratoliner air-
plane.
And what makes the boat, now known
as the Cosmic Muffin, infamous is that it
used to be an airplane owned by the late
billionaire recluse, Howard Hughes.
"When I was in high school," recalls
-Drimmer, 45, "Howard Hughes was al-
ready an old recluse doing weird things.
When he was young, however, the man
was a pure genius."

Photo/Jeff Harrell
Dave Drimmer's Cosmic Muffin,
a Boeing 307 turned houseboat, is
an unexpected presence docked
on the Middle River in Fort
Lauderdale.

Hughes was also an accomplished
aviator. In 1938 he set the around-the-
world flight record in a twin-engine
Lockheed 14. The following year, he
bought the Boeing 307 Stratoliner as part
of his purchase of TWA. Hughes attempt
to beat his own flight record in the 307
was cancelled as a result of the breakout
of World War II in Europe.
In 1948, Hughes hired industrial de-
sign expert Raymond Loewy to redesign
the plane's interior. Additional decor sug-
gestions were given by actress Rita
Hayworth.
After being purchased by Houston oil,
millionaire Glenn McCarthy in 1949, the
plane found its way to Fort Lauderdale in
1962 when McCarthy sold the plane he
had named the "Shamrock" to Fort Lau-
derdale-based Florida Jet Research.

Two years later, the "Shamrock" suf-
fered major wing and tail wheel damage
at the vicious winds of Hurricane Cleo.
After logging a relatively minuscule 500
flight hours over 25 years, the plane was
relegated to being an abandoned derelict
of history, its flight days over.
But the plane's floating days were just
beginning, when Fort Lauderdale Realtor
Ken London purchased it in 1969. Unable
to get the plane back in the air, London
cut off the wings and the tail section, trans-
ported the fuselage to a local marina and
then spent the next four years turning the
once four-engined airliner into his own
unique yacht called the Londonaire.
Drimmer bought the long, round
cruising oddity in 1981 to be used as his
home, although very few homes attract the
attention that the airplane-turned-boat gar-

ners.
It sure got musician Jimmy Buffet's
attention in 1992. While cruising down the
Middle River on his sailboat, Buffet, who
besides working as a musician and a nov-
elist, is also a licensed seaplane pilot, saw
the vessel, researched its history, then
wound up incorporating it into his first
novel, "Where Is Joe Merchant?"
In the book, the character Desdemona
is contacted by interplanetary aliens be-
fore realizing that the houseboat made
from Howard Hughes' private plane will
be her spaceship to the aliens' star sys-
tem.
In the book, the plane-boat is called
Cosmic Muffin.
Buffet also wrote a song about the
Cosmic Muffin entitled "Desdemona's

License plates

won't save turtles

By JEFF HARRELL
Waterfront News Columnist
I don't get it.
All this advertising calling on folks
to "save the sea turtles" and "save the
manatees." It's enough to make even
the mostpassiveof animallovers jump
onto the floor and kick their feet and
hands in a childish tizzy tantrum.
C'mon. Sea turtles and manatees
are still getting nixed at dramatic rates.
Yet, here is the Sea Turtle Survival
League's new license plate calling on
people to hunker down and save the
snapping little endangered critters.
Considering where most of the
items are made, the only thing I see
being saved here is some license-plate-
pressing prison inmate's mind. After
all, what's a prisoner to do with his
time when there are no license plates
to press?
Fact is, sea turtles preceded
dinosaurs on this earth.
But it wasn't until man came along
and began building condos and other
such space-grabbing things on the
beach that sea turtles began to
experience a survival problem.
When man started tossing his
trash into the ocean, the sea turtles
began to have a serious survival
problem.
First, man decided that sea turtles
and their eggs made for a great soup.
As for sea turtle shells, man's wife
began pestering him for that brand
new tortoise shell coffee table for the
living room.
Now, man is counting on saving
the sea turtles by erecting billboards
throughout the state and selling
license plates for $12.95.
"We've noticed a lot of cars in
Gainesville sporting the new sea turtle
license plate," says Dan Evans, a Sea

Turtle Survival League coordinator,
in a nifty press release put out by the
Sea Turtle Survival League. "Now you
can get a similar tag for the front of
your car. It's a great way to show
support for sea turtle conservation
efforts. They also make great gifts for
out-of-state drivers."
So do tortoise shell coffee tables.
By mid October of last year, the
Sea Turtle Survival League says that
11,826 license plates had been sold.
That figure totals up-to $153,146.70
that the League also says has been
donated to benefit "research efforts in
the U.S. as well as the international
research conservation conducted
by the League's parent
organization, Caribbean Conservation
Corporation."
You say you really want to save
the sea turtles?
Here's my advice:
Quit developing on top of the sea
turtles nests.
Stop throwing your toxic waste
into the ocean.
And, last but hardly least: Quit
capturing sea turtles and turning them
into tourist-trap gifts, coffee tables
and the soup of the day.
Same basic premise applies with
the manatees.
Pressing license plates and
erecting billboards is not going to stop
manatees from dying at a rate of more
than one per day any more than they
are going to save the sea turtles from
getting man-made to death.
The only way to save the manatees
is by slowing boats down.
That's right. Manatees, like the
sea turtles, are an endangered species,
just not as valuable. I mean, when
man runs over a manatee with his

manatee out of the water to save its hide for the wife's
new shoes.
He just leaves it there in the water to die.
Nor can a manatee see a boat coming and out-

swim any impending danger, like, say, a dolphin can.
A manatee is one of those slow-moving sea creatures
that can be clocked with a calendar. A manatee-sea
turtle race might just wind up in a photo finish.
So, slow down boaters. Manatees, like the sea
turtles, have been swimming in the water a heck of a
lot longer than man has been around to run them over

with a speed boat.
And none of the "Save The Sea Turtle" license
plates in Gainesville nor the money-pounding
billboards in Florida will change that fact.

Tourism expected to sail when tall ships cruise into East Coast ports

chatted with the international crews and
officers.
This year more than 3,500 cadets,
crew and officers are on board,
representing more than 20 nations.
Most of the ships are the official
naval training ships of their countries.
The majority are steeled hulled, built up
to 70 years ago for ceremonial activities.
Ships from Indonesia, Denmark,
Columbia, Germany, Ireland and a
dozen others will dock at berths at the
Port of Miami.
Among those on hand will be the
four-masted 371-foot-long Esmeralda
from Chile; the three-masted Denmark,
which the Danish government entrusted
to the U.S. during World War II to
prevent Nazi Germany from snatching
it, and the 376- foot Kruzenshtern, a four-
masted barque built in 1926 in St.
Petersburg, Russia that is the second
largest tall ship in the world. A crew of
110 Indonesian sailors is sailing the three-
masted Dewaruci from the Indian Ocean.

On Saturday, June 10, the armada of
ships will depart the Port of Miami in
formation, through Government Cut,
then sailing north. They'll hug the
shoreline within public view until they
reach Port Everglades in Fort
Lauderdale.
From there, they'll turn out to the
Atlantic to Norfolk, Va., where they'll
remain from June 16-20. The June 17
fireworks are being billed as the greatest
in the naval town's history.
As they sail up the Chesapeake,
thousands of recreational boats are
expected to follow alongside, with a
flotilla of 125 Coast Guard and police
boats guarding a safety zone 500 yards
ahead of the ships and 200 yards on
either side.
Baltimore tourism representatives
expect 1 million tourists to descend on
Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Canton and
Locust Point, where the ships will anchor
June 21-29.
As they glide into port, a human
quilt of 1,800 sailors from across the

Broward's '99 boating accident and fatality rate continues to hold steady

There were 829,971 vessels
registered in Florida last year, an increase
from 809,160 in 1998. Of those numbers,
at last count there are 45,041 boats in
Broward, 53,290 boats in Miami-Dade,
35,024 boats in Palm Beach and 25,862
boats in Monroe counties, according to
statistics supplied by the state's fish and
wildlife conservation commission.
All of the South Florida counties
showed a rise in registration except
Miami-Dade, which had 40 less vessels
on its rolls in 1999.
"Every year, we have additionalboat
traffic," said Cory, who works with the
Bureau of Marine Enforcement district
which covers Miami-Dade and Broward
counties. "Our population is growing
and with that you have an increase in
boats. It puts more strain on the
waterways."
Unlike the roadways, where
construction crews can build another
lane, the same can't be done with the
waterways. "What's thereis there," Cory

said. "You have a finite space. The most
boats you put into that confined space,
the more crowded it's going to become."
The bureau estimates that peak
boating traffic hours are 11 a.m. to 5
p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Although
officers stay busy year-round, traffic
seems to become the most intense during
peak boating season, which runs from
October through the end of April, Coryr
said.
For those who don't like being in
jam-packed waters, law enforcement
officials say to sit back and relax.
"The best advice that anyone can
give is to not be in a hurry, remain
courteous and to watch your vessel's
speed and wake," he said. "You should
sit back, relax and enjoy boating. You
don't need to race your boat. Most
people unfortunately operate their boat
in one of two positions. It's either the
throttle is in neutral or it's knuckles on
the console. There are other speeds."
Education is also important. "There
are a lot of people who have never
obtained any formal instruction,"

Whitford said. "Certainly, any prudent
boater should take safety courses and
learn what the rules are."
Having a look-out on board is a
good idea too, said Hollywood Police
Marine Unit Sgt. Richard Nardello.
Despite the growing boat traffic, law
enforcement officers like Nardello are
encouraged by a recent report from
Florida's fish and wildlife conservation
commission, stating figures from 1999
show the lowest statewide accident rate
in six years.
The rate, 155.6 accidents per 100,000
registered boats, is based on 1,292 total
accidents. In 1998, there were 158.4
accidents for every 100,000 registered
boats, based on a total of 1,282 accidents.
Broward has maintained its position
as second in the state for the highest
number of accidents. Its accident rate
didn't decrease. In 1999, there were 149
mishaps, up from 120 in 1998.
Miami-Dade ranked fourth and
Palm Beach is third. Monroe came in
first. Ranking for all of the counties has
remained unchanged from the previous

year as well.
Accident rates went up in Miami-
Dade, from 77 in 1998 to 88 in 1999. Palm
Beach and Monroe saw decreases. Palm
Beach had 100 accidents in 1999,
compared to 107.in 1998. Monroe had
199 accidents in 1999, down from 213 in
1998.
Monroe County also saw a large dip
in fatalities. There were five in 1998.
Only one occurred in 1999.
Broward's fatality rate remained the
same, three each in 1998 and 1999.
Miami-Dade had three boating-related
deaths in 1998 and nine in 1999. Palm
Beach had five fatalities in 1998 and two
last year.
Marine patrol officers credit the
reductions statewide in accidents and
fatalities to more education and
enforcement efforts.
"Word is getting out through law
enforcement efforts," Cory said. "People,
in general, are becoming more aware
aboutwhat they are doing in their boats.
Obviously, the statistics are very
encouraging."

Houseboat with rich history now sitting pretty on the Middle River

Building A Rocketship" on his record, "Banana Wind."
Buffet's writings and the boat's unique history gave
cause for Drimmer to form the Plane Boats company that
markets the Cosmic Muffin as an historic attraction.
"To some it's ajoke boat," Drimmer says of his house
boat. "It's a novelty vessel that is made to stand out and
get noticed. It's devolving as a home and involving into
a marketing tool."
And oh, does Cosmic Muffin ever draw attention.
Today, the outside is painted white and blue and ap-
pears to be a long, rounded missile-shaped vessel rather
than a cruise boat.
Yet, although its long round hot dog shape might lend
itself to more motion than the normal boat, Drimmer
admits that the boat is extremely "bottom heavy" due to
the flat, houseboat-style hull on the bottom.
The pair of 50-horsepower outboard Yamaha mo-
tors that power the vessel are "designed to run slow and
strong."
Inside, Drimmer shares a sleeping section in the back
of the boat with his black and white cat, Midnight. Pho-
tos of Hughes and Buffet adorn the walls, including a
Buffet poster.
In the living room portion of the boat sits the plane's

original bar, a beautiful, brown wooden piece that emits
images of Hughes and various movie stars lounging in
the sky, giving new meaning to the term "drunken high."
Also original are four of the plane's chairs and its old
cockpit that now serves as the boat's helm. A computer
on a table loans a modern air.
"Most of what you see was done in '94," Drimmer
says. "Most of it was motivated and inspired by Jimmy
Buffet's book."
And Buffet's influence is huge in the marketing of
the vessel. Besides a product arrangement with Yamaha,
the sponsor of the boat's motors "until we find the magic
crystal to make it a rocketship," says Drimmer, the Cos-
mic Muffin has been a featured attraction at the recent

Air & Sea Show pilots' party and the Fort Lauderdale
Boat Parade. Drimmer is also working on getting spon-
sorship-from-the-Corona beer company-,Buffet's corpo-
rate tour sponsor.
"I like to call it the second most famous boat in Fort
Lauderdale," says Drimmer, admitting that the Jungie
Queen is "number one." Since Drimmer stopped count-
ing at the $150,000 mark that he has sunken into the boat
for restoration, Plane Boats, Inc. is still in the process of
looking for corporate sponsors.
When he and first mate Dan Cormier, whom
Drimmer calls "Cosmic Muffin's best friend," prepare to
dock, they must first steer the boat perpendicular to its
dock since.the boat depends on the original airplane's
navigational system of forward motion only.
Once in proper position, the two grab ropes tied to
the rear of the boat and pull it backwards in order for the
cockpit to be in the position of entering the Middle River
when it's time to pull out.
Of course, once its back out on the water, the attrac-
tions and the options become numerous. Why, Drimmer
is even thinking about adding a unique perk: a motion
sickness bag printed with two labeled squares, one of
which passengers would check off.
"That's the beauty of the Cosmic Muffin," Drimmer
says. "You have the option of getting airsick or seasick."
