Old motors never die
Antique Outboard Motor Club
to hold show in Lauderdale
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Buzz Lamb owns nearly 300 antique outboard
motors. He has restored about half and is busy working
on the rest.
To Lamb, the engines are an important part of
history. "The outboard motor revolutionized the
marine industry as we know it," he said. "It made
recreational boating more available to the masses."
Lamb isn't alone in his opinion. He belongs to a
group with some 200 members who are dedicated to
preserving these machines.
Since the late 1970s, hobbyists belonging to the
Florida chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club
have been sharing their pastime with each other and
the public. Their next gathering will be a swap meet
and show, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 22 at Easterlin Park,
at 1000 NW 38th St. in Oakland Park.
Admission is free. Visitors only have to pay the
park's regular weekend gate fee of $1 per person for
everyone ages 5 and older.
"We have a wealth of information for anyone who
would like to attend," Lamb said. "We're a fun club.
We would love the public to come."
The chapter holds monthly swap meets and shows
at different locations around the state. This is the

Power Squadron celebrates anniversary with passing of flags

Local chapters exchange
ensign by boat
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
To commemorate their organization's 85th
anniversary, four Broward-based U.S. Power Squadron
units are taking part in a cross-country flag passing
ceremony.
Representatives recently met at the Coral Ridge
Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale. The ensign was
transferred by the Hollywood unit to members of the
Coral Ridge, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach
squadrons.
The flag is one of five ensigns that have been
making its way across the United States and Canada
via boat, being passed from squadron to squadron.
The journey started in June, from San Juan, Puerto
Rico. All five flags are expected to be joined together in
late January, when the United States Power Squadrons
holds its annual meeting in Orlando.
Doris Pfenniger, executive officer of the Hollywood
power squadron, said it's an honor to be involved in
the anniversary celebration.

The non-profit organization,
which was founded in 1914,
has about 60,000 members
in 440 squadrons

"It was thrilling to get the flag," she said. "We
were happy to receive it and pass it on to Fort
Lauderdale."
The Hollywood squadron got the ensign on Dec.
14 from members of the Marathon power squadron.
The exchange tookplace on the water, at the Hollywood
Marina.
The ensign went to members of the Coral Ridge,
Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach squadrons on
Dec. 19. The next transfer will be to the Port St. Lucie
squadron, who will then carry the flag to Orlando.
The flag passing ceremonies are a good way to
make all of the squadrons become part of the
anniversary festivities, Pfenniger said.
The milestone event is unusual, said Conrad
Reisinger, past commander of the Coral Ridge
squadron.

"Today, so many things come and ago," he said.
"Alot of organizations don'treachtheir 85thbirthday."
Laura Teatero, a lieutenant commander with the
Coral Ridge unit, said passing the flags are also a good
way to raise awareness about the USPS.
The non-profit organization, which was founded
in 1914, has about 60,000 members in 440 squadrons.
To many people, the group is best known for its
free boating safety courses. To date, some four million
students have been taught by volunteer instructors.
In Broward, classes are held year-round. In 1999,
the county's four power squadrons held 24 courses.
Topics include personal watercraft safety, boating
safety, docking and equipment, Teatero said.
"We've had many years of volunteer service,
keeping people safe on the water," Pfenniger said.
For more information on boating safety classes,
call the United States Power Squadrons' national
headquarters at 888-367-8777.

Last year's event at Easterlin drew around 250

At the swap meet, folks are invited to sell and trade

crankshaft toss and a contest to see who can guess how
long an engine will run on a cup of gas, said Lamb, who
coordinates the event.
Lamb became involved in restoring antique
outboard motors 25 years ago, when he purchased a
1946 Speedy Twin 22 and a half horsepower Evinrude
engine. It was the same model he once used a kid, while
growing up in Lake George, N.Y.
When he's not spending his winters in Fort
Lauderdale, Lamb runs a marina, repair shop and boat
sales showroom that his family founded 80 years ago
in Lake George.
Lamb's personal collection includes every model
ever made by Martin Outboard Motors, which
produced the engines between 1946 and 1953. Company
founder George Martin, who lives in Deerfield Beach,
is a regular swap meet attendee, Lamb said.
The swap meet lets people see the development of
outboarding through the decades. The first assembly
line outboard motor was produced in 1909 by Ole
Evinrude. It cost $85, three times more than a Model T
Ford, Lamb said.
Without this chapter, some of these old motors

On-line, live auctions give second chance to hurricane-wrecked boats

Web site serves as 'viewing
port' to potential buyers
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Sully Sutherlin felt that, for years, damaged boats
were the Rodney Dangerfield of the marine industry. i .
They got no respect.
Sutherlin thought he could change that by starting
a business where he would pick up storm-ravaged
vessels and auction them off. His instincts soon proved -__
correct.
Through his company, bentboat.com, Sutherlin ,
and his partner, Bill Perry, havebeen retrievingbanged .
up boats and successfully selling them through auctions
around the country for the past four years.
He serves as a marine matchmaker of sorts,
bringing portless vessels together with willing buyers
in search of a good deal.
About 95 percent of the vessels come from i -
insurance companies including All State, Boat US,
State Farm and Signa. The rest are from private owners.
A few sales are also made to help raise funds for
charitable organizations, said Sutherlin, who lives in
the Florida Keys.
Recently, bentboat.com held its first auction in Photo/TAYLOR JONES
Broward County. Sutherlin took bids on some 115 Bentboat.com recently held its first auction in Fort Lauderdale. The company, whose boats can be

viewed on-line, is planning more in the area.

Today's maritime legal concepts may be ahead of its time

American nation.
In fact, it was considered important enough by the
founding fathers that the Constitution specifically gives
federal courts jurisdiction over admiralty and maritime

*Hundreds of years before workers compensation
was the remotest concept in any other industry, seamen
had a right to medical care.
*Almost 1,000 years before comparative negligence
(sharing blame and losses between parties and/or
tortfeasors) became the common way of reviewing cases,
such a form of analysis was done in admiralty cases.

*Insurance for a premium was a direct invention for
the needs of the maritime industry. Arguably, the concept
of insurance for a premium made exploration, the
industrial revolution, and such trivial things as middle
class home ownership possible. The modem world we
know probably wouldn't exist without it.
But it is arguably true that admiralty law has been
slower than some other legal areas in accepting the
concept of punitive damages and allowing for loser
interpretation of contracts. On the other hand, in the last
few years many courts and legislatures are trying to
reform tort law to prevent it from being so "rewarding,'
meaning that admiralty law may have actually been
ahead of the curve after all.
Basically, through the centuries, admiralty law has
been slow to change, but when it does, it tends to lead
rather follow. Due to this, and its international nature,
maritime law will probably continue to be used even
after some other facets of law are forgotten.
Besides, if the pundits are right, there aren't going to
be any airplanes flying after Jan. 1 anyway. So, we're
going to need all those boats.

Auction's damaged boats may require expertise beyond bidder's capability

vessels and 35 personal watercraft in
December at a Fort Lauderdale boat
yard. Most of the boats were damaged
by hurricanes Irene and Floyd.
"There's no rocket science to this,"
he said. "We're simply filling a need.
The insurance companies are not in the
boat selling business."
By acting as a clearing house,
bentboat.com fills a niche. Insurers get
90 percent of the sale price, which is
often a higher return than they would
get for other means of disposal, such as
taking the damaged vessels to auto
salvage pools, he said.
Although bentboat.com isn't the
only company selling salvaged vessels,
Sutherlin thinks his firm maybe the first
to do a large share of its business on-line
and live.
The on-line auctions began in
November. Bentboat.com has so far sold
two vessels on its website. "This was the
first test," he said. "The insurance
company, All State, seemed to be very

happy with the results."

More vessels will be put up for bid in
the upcoming year. "I'm pretty sure that
we will be doing one boat a week," he
said.
The website also serves as a viewing
port for would-be buyers who plan on
attending the company's live auctions.
The preview inventory for the Fort
Lauderdale auction attracted buyers
from all over the country and Europe,
who traveled to Mega Marine at 1601
SW 20th St.
Boats ranged from ones with a few
scratches to vessels that had gouges in
the hull.
Jim Magnuson, of Oklahoma, bought
a 43-foot Hunter sailboat and a 24-foot
Fountain motorboat. Magnuson is no
stranger to bentboat.com's auction. He
was at one held last year in Mobile, Ala.
"I just drove 1,600 miles and I got a
good deal," Magnuson said. "And I
would do it again."
Magnuson also likes that the

inventory is on-line. "I know what
exactly is being auctioned for sale," he
said. 'There are no surprises."
Ed Wiser, a yacht captain from Fort
Lauderdale, said he thought the auction
was well run.
"There were no reserves, no
minimums and no sealed bids," he said.
"It kept the proceedings very honest."
Wiser was also impressed with the
on-line access to view inventory
beforehand. "That was a tremendous
advantage," he said.
Over the past 10 years, Wiser has
purchased, restored and resold about 60
boats from distress sales. Bentboat.com's
auction was the largest selection he had
seen since Hurricane Andrew.
But Wiser cautions that boaters
should be careful at these auctions.

"A lot people get caught up in the
emotion of the moment," he said. "People
assume they can buy these boats cheap,
then work on them in their spare time
and save money. They need to be honest
with themselves before bidding."
Potential buyers need to ask
themselves how much time and money
they want to invest. Also, what kind of
skills they have, he said.
"The average bidder doesn't have
the ability to pull an engine and rebuild
it," he Wiser. "That often mean hiring a
pro to come in."
In some instances, it would be
cheaper tobuy a usedboat that is already
in working condition, he said.
Sutherlin agrees. "I'm the first one to
always say that these boats are not for
everybody," he said.
Sutherlin is looking forward to
holding more auctions in Fort Lauderdale.
"We're negotiating with Mega Marine to
have a permanent lease and make it a
central clearing house," he said.
