RADIO WAVES
Couple broadcasts talk
show aboard 32-foot cutter
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer '
Sponsors alone don't keep Ed and Ruth
Shaw's radio show afloat. Having a seaworthy
craft is just as important. -
For the past four years, the Shaws have been
broadcasting their weekly program from aboard
their own 32-foot cutter and a myriad of other
vessels, ranging from tugboats to aircraft carriers.
"Where ever we go, w% find-the nearest body
of water and set up," he said.
Their travels have provided the three-hour
-talk show with some very interesting backdrops
including a lake in Scotland, France's Seine River
and a marina in the British Virgin Islands.
Broadcasting from so many locales isn't
difficult at all for the Broward-based pair. A
portable satellite unit that's no bigger than a
laptop computer and weighs about 10 pounds
allows them to reach a'worldwide audience from
Soon to 3 p.m. every Sunday.

On-water dive trade show expects knee-deep crowds

About 7,500 people attend last year's
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea show
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Sure, other Scubashows have vendors, lectures and com-
petitions. But how many can claim to be directly on the beach,
where visitors can bring their gear and take a dive into the
ocean?
Organizers of the annual Ocean Fest and Dive Trade Show
in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea claim theirs is the only one of its
kind in the country.
"It's the only dive show that we know of where you can
actually go diving," said Neal Watson, show producer and
owner of Neal Watson's Undersea Adventures, a dive tour
company in Fort Lauderdale.
This unique amenity of having an expo directly on the
water draws thousands of people from all over the world.
About 7,500 enthusiasts came to last year's show, despite a
steady downpour during its three-day run.
The upcoming third annual Ocean Fest will again be held
at the El Prado municipal parking area, one block north of

Scuba show nets funds for environmental causes

ber of Commerce, who wanted suggestions on how to pull in
tourists during the tourist town's slow summer season.
The show turned out to be a wise choice. The event has
grown considerably since its was first introduced.
"We started with 70 dealers and now have close to 200
displays," said Carl Watson, chamber president and Neal
Watson's brother.
Much of the credit for the show's success goes to his
brother, said Carl Watson.
"Neal has many contacts in the industry and is well-known
in the diving community."
Neal Watson was recently featured on a television show
training Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, for a segment on
shark diving. He also holds two world records, made in the
late 1960s and early '70s. One is for underwater depth with
air, measuring 437 feet. The other is underwater long dis-
tance without surfacing for air, where Watson traveled 66
miles in 19 hours. *
The show greatly helped promote diving in Broward
County, where the sport has become one of the area's fastest
growing niche markets for vacationers, said Francine Ma-
son, vice president of communications-for the Greater Fort

Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau.
In fact, Broward was named this year as one of the top 10
dive destinations in the world by Rodale's Scuba Diving
Magazine, she said.
Paul Humann, board chairman of the Reef Environmen-
tal Education Foundation, or REEF for short, said he's glad
the show is helping to promote the sport. More people taking
up diving means more potential -volunteers for his South
Florida-based organization, which monitors reef marine life

in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
REEF will be amongst three non-profit conservation
groups to receive a portion of the show's proceeds. Other
beneficiaries are the Ocean Watch Foundation and Ocean
Futures.
Monies donated to REEF will go toward funding its of-
fice and staff. "We're very happy for any support we can
get," Humann said.
Humann, 61, has been diving for nearly 40 years. He ech-
oes the sentiments of many fellow enthusiasts when talking
about the sport.
"There's a beauty that you see underwater," he said. "It's
like leaving this world and going someplace else"

A prayer

in a storr

By MARK ERCOLIN'
Waterfront News Columnist ..
My father told me many stories
about his childhood growing up,in.
Vero Beach, which wasn't always a
hot spot for well-heeled golfers and
retirees. Until the end of the Second
World War, most people in Vero
.'either worked, in some facet of the
marine business or owned a citrus
grove.
:i In those pre-war years, life-
wasn't always easy and much of the
town's annual prosperity was
dependent on the weather. A bad
hurricane season could wipe out the
citrus crop and quite a few families
would be at risk of losing their
livelihoods.
Apparently, Vero Beach
experienced several such seasons in
the mid-1930s and couldn't afford
another hit. According to Dad, when
reports came of another large
hurricane approaching the area,
instead of merely preparing for the
storm in the usual fashion, a call was,
sent out for a gathering of the local
religious congregations (even the
ones that didn't get along with each
other) for a single meeting of the
county's citizens to pray, for
protection against the. furious
weather to come.
This hurricane, which .was.
predicted to make a direct hit on
Vero Beach and Indian River County,
instead turned, slightly south in the
last possible minutes', basically
circled the county and failed to do
appreciable damage to the groves.
And, as legend would have it, the
family farms were spared.

You have to admit, it is a pretty
good story. However, as we
approach the worst part of the

hurricane season, the power of
prayer may- be not sufficient to
protect a boat owner's vessel.
It's no secrete that hurricane
planning should be done long before
a storm is even expected. One of the
first things that must be considered
, is where are you going to put your
boat during a storm. Ideally, if there
is enough time, you should take your
vessel out of the area in danger (ever
notice' that large ships leave port
before a hurricane hits? There's a
reason for this, you know).
It is very likely that the closer
your present dock is to the ocean
and landfall during a hurricane, the
less safe your boat will be. Provided,
a hurricane has not hit before the
printing of this article, it's not too
late to try and make arrangements
for alternative dbckage in an
emergency situation.
Don't be surprised if the
providers of your present dockage
request or suggest you leave before
a storm arrives.
In many cases, either through
contract or implication, they are not
responsible for damage to your
vessel from an act of God; and there
is no truer an act of God-than a
hurricane.
This is just another of the many
reasons why arrangements for
emergency mooring's should be-
made in advance of a problem.
"Butwait!" youmightsay, "amInot
allowed to moor my vessel at the nearest
safe location in an emergency?"
The answer to this question is yes,
but with limitations. This situation is
called an Easement by Necessity, which

Looking for

Mario

By JEFF HARRELL
Waterfront News Columnist
What in the world happened to
Mario Baez?
One minute, Mario was swimming
in the Atlantic off Pompano Beach, just
south of the Hillsboro Inlet.
The next minute, he was gone, two
days before a scheduled court'date in
Broward County. It seems months
earlier he had been arrested in Purto
Rico and extraditedback to south Florida
to face charges of strong arm robbery.
Apparently, Mario had been outon bail,
since early June.
According to Kirk Englehardt,
spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's
Office, the 29-year-old resident of
Deerfield Beach was swimming less than
100 yards offshore while two female
companions watched him dive under
water, then return to the surface several
times. He wasn't wearing diving
equipment. He wasn't snorkeling.
Then, Mario is said to have
disappeared under water one last time.
The women found themselves
dialing 911 to report that he never came
back up.
That was on Aug. 8, a hot, sunny
Sundayafternoon. Forthenexttwo days,
BSO and Lighthouse Point marine patrol
units combed the waters while a BSO,
helicopter scanned the area from the air.
Englehardt says the BSO search was
ironically remindful of the recent search
for John F. Kennedy Jr.'s missing plane.
At least they-found John Jr.
BSO called off their search for Mario
after two days.
Where that left the 29-year-old is a
theorist's dream.
Unlike those deep, rough, cold and
treacherous waters a few miles off Cape
Cod, Mario had been enjoying a hot,
sunny day in calm Florida waters that

natives sometimes call "glass." He
was swimming a little further out than
the two women apparently dared to
tread, and while drowning was
certainly a possibility,-Mario was still
close enough to the shore for the
ocean's tide to wash up his body..
Since he wasn't wearing any
diving equipment or snorkeling gear,
it's doubtful he got hooked under
water on a rock.
Unless he got a body part caught
on a rock, in which case divers would
have found him in the relatively
shallow waters.
"Six to eight feet," says Pompano
Beach Patrol Capt. Jim Kehl, the
lifeguard that Sunday afternoon on
Pompano's public beach about a half-
mile south of the privately-owned area
where Mario was. reportedly
swimming behind.
"Which makes this more of a
mystery," Kehl adds. "It's tnot that
deep."
Oh, and there are other theories.
Mario could have been wearing
something shiny and a barracuda
could have come along and ... you
imagine the rest.
Or, there's the obvious. The "Jaws"
theory. You know, when the hungry
shark, comes .along and sees what
appears to be a struggling fish going
up to the surface before landing right
in front of Jaws' nose.
Police admit that in the event of a
.;hark attack, there'sfill would have
been traces of clothing in this case
Mario's bathing suit, or some other
more gruesome telltale indications
washed along the shore, since sharks
don't swallow their victims whole.

cuff conversation about the missing

Couple travels to exotic locales to broadcast their anti-drug message

The couple's voices can be heard in 95
countries and almost every state via the Talk
America Radio and Cable Radio networks. They
also broadcast 11 a.m. to noon Fridays and 1 to 2
p.m. Saturday on WAXY 790AM and several
other stations throughout Florida.
Internet users can pick up the show too noon
to 3 p.m. Sunday at www.talkamerica.com
Since' they began the program, called the
"Ruth and Ed Shaw Show," the couple have
interviewed many celebrities, athletes,
politicians and authors on family health-related
topics such as maintaining, good relationships,
weigh loss and preventing illnesses.,
Famous folks sharing their thoughts have
been U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, Olympic medal
winner Bruce Jenner and actor Ben Gazzara.-
Many of the celebrities come because they
support Ruth Shaw's non-profit organization,
Hugs Not Drugs.
The group promotes prevention and
education about substance abuse and AIDS

MORE
Business Cards

The couple, who were
married eight years ago,
vow that they will continue
to host their show whenever
they can, either from the water,
or near its edge

through workbooks arid other materials.
Ruth Shaw founded Hugs Not Drugs in 1983,
while working as a junior high school teacher in
Rockaway, N.J. "I was watching my students get
involved with drugs and wrote a workbook to
help them understand the dangers of substance
abuse," she said.
While looking for a way to reach more people
with the organization's anti-drug message, Ruth
Shaw urged her husband to re-enter the broadcast
business.
Ed Shaw, a one-time actor and Beverly Hills
publicist, has a sporadic radio career that
spanned three decades. He hadn't been on the
air for 15 years when his wife came to him with
the idea. He told her that he would start a show
with one major condition.
"That she would do it with me," he said.

The couple, who were married eight years
ago, vow that they will continue to host their
show whenever they can, either from the water,
or near its edge.
"We gravitate toward boats," said Ruth Shaw.
"Both of us love living-near the water and we
love boating. We've always been coastal people
in the true sense of the word."
Of course, the Shaws can't always broadcast
from abroad. In. some places, the couple have
had to go on the air from landlocked sites such as
Windsor Castle in England, a jungle in Boreno
and a tent on a Native American reservation in
Taos, New Mexico.
When they're not on the road, the couple
relaxes at their house in Lighthouse Point, where
their two sailboats are docked out back.
Occasionally, they broadcast from their
residence.
But they aren't home very often, frequently
traveling up to two weeks each month to promote
their show and the Hugs Not Drugs organization.
"It's a great lifestyle," said Ed Shaw. "Radio
is a great medium. You don't have to dress up or
put on make up."
Ruth Shaw enjoys being on the air too. "I love
talking to all these people," she said. I feel we're
giving out valuable life-saving information."

Revolutionary deck surface

eliminates maintenance and

health risks from your wood deck

(NAPS)-A new product may
help make decks more durable
and more of a delight.
While most homeowners enjoy
the dining, entertaining and sun-
ning opportunities a deck can
offer, few want to spend, a lot
maintaining the deck's wood or
coping with the health problems
wood decks are associated with.
Regular staining and sealing of
a wood deck can be expensive-up
to $1,200 a year for common size
decks. Since most' decks are made
of treated wood, they can deterio-
rate quickly and look unsightly
unless routinely pressure washed
and sealed using expensive stains
and water repellent sealers.
Also, chemicals used to pressure
treat lumber contain toxins, which
can pose health risks and raise
environmental issues. Finally,
there's the.,classic health risk-a
wood sliver or rusty nail protruding
from the dleck can penetrate the
skin and cause a serious infection.
A new alternatives to this prob-
4ematic approach is Anchor Deck-
ing's Durable Deck, which protects
Much the way yinyl siding does by
installing directly over the wood-
protecting it from the elements.
;It can even;be installed over
concrete. Similar to vinyl siding,

A new product helps eliminate
the problems associated with
wood decking.
Durable Deck is made from a
GEON PVC compound material
proven to withstand punishing
outdoor conditions.
Finally, because Durable Deck
is a retrofit product and requires
no structural change to a home, a
building permit is not needed in
most areas and can be easily
installed by either the homeowner
or a contractor.
The deck system is available in
six attractive colors to comple-
ment a variety of homes and
comes with a lifetime warranty.
Considering the many benefits of
both wood and vinyl, some say this
product could represent the great-
est achievements in preserving
wood decks this century. For more
information, call (561) 702-3357.

swimmer, suggested what I've always referred to as
the Jim Morrison Theory.
Of course I'mtalking about The Doors' lead singer
whose girlfriend supposedly found him dead of a
heart attack in a Paris hotel-room bathtub in 1971.
No autopsy was ever performed on Jim. During
the funeral, his casket was closed, making matters
even more spooky. Nobody saw him before or after he
supposedly died that night except his girlfriend -
and she wound up dying of a drug overdose three
yearsilater. it t
Meanwhile, legend has it that Jim got out alive..

There are those who swear that today Jim lives in some
remote jungle where he writes poetry and lives just for
the heck of it.
Of course it sounds crazy. Just as crazy as Elvis
managing a convenient store in Kalamazoo.
It's just that people swimming right off Pompano
Beach don't just vanish every day.
Somewhere there's got to be a trace of Mario Baez.
Otherwise, where'd he go?

Advance emergency plans help alleviate hurricane turmoil

comes into play when you are on a normal voyage and
but are forced to'noor or beach your vessel due to
unforeseen emergency conditions.
This doesn't mean you can take your boat out
and expect to rely on legal precedent. Moreover,
case law holds that your boat will be strictly liable
for any damage inflicted by its "trespass" while
utilizing the privilege of easement. This means that
"any port in a storm" could become an expensive
proposition, bringing us to another topic of
hurricane preparation: insurance.
As I've said before, I don't like pushing
insurance, but when disaster strikes and you have
a loss, or you're held liable for a loss, it's rather nice

to have. And remember, don't wait for the first
storm warnings before you go shopping for
insurance. It just isn't going to work. Another good
tip in preparing for a hurricane is to familiarize
yourself with your local policies concerning
maritime evacuations.
Here in Broward, a rather useful booklet is put
out in a joint project between the Broward County
Marine Advisory Committee, the Florida Inland
Navigation District, and the Marine Industries
Association of South Florida. It's called the Broward
Boater's Guide, which offers excellent information
on local hurricane evacuation procedures, hurricane
preparation, as well as a plethora of good
information on other boating topics.
Copies of this booklet can be found for free at

many local marinas. If you have trouble finding
one, call the Marine Industries Association of South
Florida at (954) 524-2733 to find a location where
you can get a copy. It's a decent booklet to keep
around, providing you read it, of course.
Basically, the key to hurricane safety is thinking
ahead. Keep in mind that those folks in Vero Beach
said their prayers before the hurricane hit, and they
didn't start the meeting until they had made every
other possible advance preparation. So I believe it's
true what they say: "The Lord helps those who help
themselves!"
Mark Ercolin is a maritime attorney practicing
in Fort Lauderdale. The information offered in this
column in summary and general in nature arid
should not be applied to specific cases or situations.
