International race becomes
teaching tool
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Sixth graders Arriale Douglas and
Kamesha Butler are spending their school
year on the high seas making stops at
ports around the world.
And they're doing it without ever
leaving their desks.
The girls, students at Parkway Middle
School of the Arts in Fort Lauderdale, are
following the Whitbread Round the World
Race as part of a new classroomcurriculum
designed to help kids gain a better
understanding about such subjects as
weather and geography through the sport
of sailing.
The grueling 31,600-mile course is a
perfect teaching tool, said Peg Buchan,
executive director of Whitbread Race
Americas Inc., a group of local volunteers
who are setting up a welcome village for
the crews during their 16-day stay at Port
Everglades in Fort Lauderdale this spring.
"This is a global event that crosses all
boundaries of cultural diversity," Buchan
said.
The competition, which takes place
once every four years, got underway Sept.
21 in Southampton, England. Itis expected
to end where it started in May.
Buchan expects theprogram will reach
thousands of school children by the time
the boats arrive for the Fort Lauderdale
stopover in April.
So far, here estimates seem right on
course. Since its introduction in October,
the curriculum is being used in some 200
classrooms in about 60 elementary, middle
and high schools countywide, said Merrie

A temporary replacement for the 17th Street Causeway
bridge in Fort Lauderdale was built in midJanuary to keep
traffic open while a permanent drawbridge is under
construction. Shown is one of the two concrete piers that
will hold the 133-foot, 159-ton temporary steel structure.
In the top left corner is the 220-foot crane, nicknamed
Southern Hercules. The permanent bridge project is
expected to take about three years to complete.

Meyers-Kershaw, partnerships director
for the Broward County School Board.
Both the school board and Whitbread
Race Americas Inc. worked together on
coordinating the project. Funding was
provided by the Institute of Marine
Sciences, a non-profit education and
research support organization based in
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Kershaw said.
The program, with the exception of a
recently added technology component,
was devised by Julie and Debbie Eells,
local educators and sisters, who drew up
their plans over the summer.
Although the curriculum is aimed at
middle schoolers, it can be adopted for
any age level, said Julie Eells, who teaches
seventh and eighth grade social studies at
Seminole Middle School in Plantation.
"Most of our ideas were things that
we were already doing in the classroom,"
said Debbie Eells, a seventh grade science
teacher at Olsen Middle School in Dania.
"We just applied it to a sailing theme."
Lessons revolve around the race and
include such topics as plotting courses
using latitude and longitude, building an
anemometer to measure wind speed and
discussing how "shipshape" and other
popular boating terms made their way
into everyday conversation.
Students are also getting an extraboost
by watching the events unfold on the
Internet. Otherlearning devices supplied
by Whitbread Race Americas include
videos depicting race highlights from
previous years, maps and a roster of special
guest speakers who range from former
crew members to a painter specializing in
nautical art, Buchan said.

Visitors find thrills and frills on wild water ride

Action-packed Cyclone
belies ordinary craft
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The Cyclone is definitely not for the well-coifed. A
ride on the vessel is akin to stepping inside a large wind
tunnel. Traveling at speeds up to 35 knots, the giant
bright yellow speedboat takes the simplest of hair styles
and twists it out of shape in a matter of seconds.
Luckily, that didn't matter to Bob Weaver and Kim
Atz. The couple, tourists visiting Fort Lauderdale from
Delaware, weren't concerned about looking stylish while
cruising. They just wanted to have fun.
"We had a good time," Atz said. "It certainly wasn't
boring."
Such remarks prompt a smile fromJoe Nonnamaker,
a mate on the Cyclone. "We're not your run-of-the-mill,
traditional boat tour," he said.
Billing itself as a thrill ride, the Cyclone has been
taking passengers on 75-minute Intracoastal and ocean
voyages since docking at Fort Lauderdale's Bahia Mar
Marina in November.
The 149-seat, custom-made ocean rocket, as it is
called, is one of five Cyclones being independently
operated around the country. The others are in Chicago,
Cleveland and California.
The vessels have fiberglass hulls and measure 70
feet long by 18 feet wide. The craft also comes outfitted
with two V-12 engines, each with twin turbos that
generate 1,300 horsepower, and state-of-the-art
electronics such as a global positioning system, radar,
depth finder and speed gage.
It leaves Bahia Mar four times a day from 10:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. A mate and licensed captain accompany
each tour.
What folks get for their money is part narrated tour,
part theme park thrill ride. The journey starts off slow
with a leisurely cruise down the Intracoastal, past the
multimillion dollar mansions that belong to the famous
and the wealthy.
More noteworthy residences such as the house
belonging to Wendy's restaurant chain founder Dave
Thomas, and the home where Sonny and Cher once
lived, are pointed out.
Along the way, the boat's 5000 watt stereo sound
systemblares tunes, everything from the Gilligan's Island
theme song to Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville."

Profile

The real action takes place when the Cyclone hits the
ocean's open waters and guests are told to hang on as the
familiar chords from the T.V. show "Hawaii Five-O" fill
the air. The boat cruises past Fort Lauderdale beach to
Oceanwalk in Hollywood, then turns around for its
return trip to Bahia Mar.
Along the way, passengers are asked whether they
want to participate in a giant log flume. The effect, set to
the song "Wipe Out," is created by lowering the boat's

bow and pointing the vessel into the wind.
If getting soaked isn't your thing, don't worry,
Nonnamaker said. "We can control who gets wet and
who doesn't," he said.
Atz and Weaver were among those getting doused
on a recent ride. "We weren't expecting that," Atz said.
The couple learned about the Cyclone through an
article they saw in a magazine aimed at tourists. So far,
the attraction'sbiggest appealhasbeen to out-of-towners.
About 70 percent of its customers are vacationers,
Nonnamaker said.

Tourist boat excursions become popular vacation pastime

CYCLONE FROM P. 3
But as the new kid in town, Cyclone owner Chris
Pustizzi hopes to make an impression on locals too.
Indeed, it's hard for them not to notice the ocean rocket.
"They call us the big yellow boat" said Nonnamaker,
who has received gapes, smiles, waves and stares from
recreational boaters.
Nonnamaker believes it's just a matter of timebefore
residents discover the ride. "It's a slow process getting
established, but we plan on being here a long time" he
said.
Pustizzi intends to dock his Cyclone at Bahia Mar
from November to mid-May. The remainder of the year,
it will be based in Ocean City, NJ.
Pustizzi chose Fort Lauderdale as the boat's winter
home because of the city's reputation as a tourist mecca
and yachting capital.
"It has nice weather and plenty of people," he said.
"We hope to be down here permanently starting in
1999."
The Cyclone is the latest in a long line of boat tours
available in South Florida including the Sea Screamer, a
ride similar to the Cyclone. The 149-passenger, 73-foot-
long Sea Screamer has been docked at Shooter's
restaurant in Fort Lauderdale for 18 months.

75-minute are $19.95 for adults and $12.50 for kids ages
4 to 12. Children age 3 and younger ride free. Discount

operates November through May. It is docked the rest
of the year in Ocean City, NJ. Call (954) 467-RIDE.
The Sea Screamer is docked at Shooter's, 3032 NE
32nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets for a two-hour
voyage are $15 for adults and $12 for kids. Children
age 4 and younger are invited on board at no charge.
Tours are held daily October through May. The rest of
the year the boat is based in Myrtle Beach, SC. Call

Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, is glad to
see the Cyclone join the area's list of things to do. While
it's unknown exactly how much money these attractions
pump into the economy, the region's variety -of boat
tours have become animportantpartof people's vacation
experience, she said.

Dealing with angels & devils

By JEFF HARRELL
Waterfront News Columnist
If it looks
like Jell-O,
wiggles like
Jell-O and tastes
like Jell-O,
chances are.
you're going to
call it Jell-O no
matter which
company
1, produced it.
s e It's the
same with
Kleenex. Somebody could hand you a
paper towel or even newspaper, but if
you speak English you'll probably call it
a Kleenex even if you can't name the
large manufacturing conglomerate that
spun the paper.
Well, you know that long, sleek
powerboat that looks fast enough to chase
down ocean-running drug dealers on any
"Miami Vice" episode? It's a Cigarette,
right?
So I thought.
Writing in last month's issue about
the tragic November accident on the
Intracoastalwhere a powerboat slammed
into a cabin cruiser killing all six aboard,
I referred to the craft as a "Cigarette."
Oh, but these are politically correct
times. Soon after the issue hit the streets,
Bob Black, a Lakeland-based freelance
writer who counts the Cigarette Racing
Corp. as one of his clients, was on the
phone explaining that the powerboat
involved in the accident was not a
Cigarette, but actually a Sonic.
Black is not only politically correct,
he's absolutely.correct.
Authentic Cigarette powerboats are
built by the Cigarette Corp. Their long,
deep V-hulls are designed to cut through
the water so the boat can reach maximum
speeds. They are shaped long tobe driven
fast, although why Cigarette founder Don
Aronow decided to call his design
"Cigarette" way back there on the
drawing board in the early 1970s is not
known, not even by the Cigarette Racing

Corp. employee interviewed for this
column. I mean, whoever heard of a
speedy tobacco cigarette?
Too late to ask Aronow. He was
murdered in the late 1980s.
"When the media sees a high-
performance boat, the first thing they say
is 'Cigarette.' It's world-wide known,"
says Isabel Camejo of Cigarette Racing
Corp.
Such are the perks of brand-name
evolution.
According to Stew Jones of the
Florida Powerboat Club, in the early '70s
when boat builders never printed the
company name on the side of the boat,
Aronow bucked tradition by
emblazoning "Cigarette" on the outside
of his distinctive craft in bright lettering
big enough for the blind to afford a
glimpse.
Apparently, Aronow was not only a
powerboat genius, he also had a knack
for advertising.
"If the name of the boat is on the side,
that's the one you're going to see and the
one you're. going to remember," Jones
says. "It gets to the point where they all
look so similar, and even people in the
marine industry can't tell [the difference]
between a Cigarette, a Scarab or an
Apache."
Of course, Iwasn't alone. Local media
covering the accident and even marine
patrol cops were just as guilty of using
the same knee-jerk reference.
"After all," Sgt. Larry Whitford of
the Broward County Sheriff's Office
marine unit told the Sun-Sentinel in
November after the accident:. "anybody
who has the money and time can literally
hop in one of these Cigarette boats, take
it out on the water and open it up to 80
miles per hour."
But as Black pointed out, it was a
Sonic that slammed into a Tiara S2 and
killed six men. Like the marine unit cop,
I used the Cigarette reference out of
convenience. I was handing out a Kleenex

One of my
favorite old-
time tales is the
legend of
Faust. There's
m a n y
i nn

lculldtlU 1 LL FIt e t
the story, but
here's thebasic
gist:
2istAn average
fellow named
Faust meets
this guy called
Mephistopheles, who offers all kinds of
wonderfulstuff and services--provided
that Faust signs a "simple contract."
Not long after, Faustbegins to realize
that the situation is not meeting his
expectations. But by this time, it's too
,late. The deadline has come to make
payment, which according to the contract,
stipulates that Faust's immortal soul be
cast into hell.
As he's being dragged into the
underworld by assorted demons,
Mephistopheles laughs maniacally and
says, "Well, buddy, you should've
checked the fine print!"
Boatyardrepair situations often play
out the tale of Faust. Many boaters who
don't comprehend what they need,
procure the services of a boatyard, end
up being unsatisfied with the work and
then must pay for the service anyway.
And that can be hell.
One of the main obstacles between
boat owner and boatyard owner is
communication. Far too often, the boater
fails to get across what work should
actually be done for the boat. The
boatyard, on the other hand, may fail to
fully explain what is entailed, the length
of time the repair will take and how
much it's going to cost.
The scenario usually goes something
like this:
Haggard boat owner enters a yard
and says, "Myboat isn'tworking, floating
right, pretty enough (you choose the
problem). Fix it!"
Without further consultation from

the boat owner, the boatyard will work
on the repairs until the boat is fixed, or
until they realize the repair costs more
than the whole boat is worth.
Next, a large bill is given to the boat
owner who now questions the cost and
necessity of all these repairs. The
dissatisfied customer doesn't want to
pay, and everybody involved is ready
for a costly legal fight that could take
years to settle. In addition, a maritime
lien could be placed on the boat.
Sadly, withjust an ounce of initiative
from either the boat owner or the yard,
this "trip to hell" might have been
avoided. Here's some rule-of-thumb
preventive measures to remember:
*Never say, "I don't care how much
it costs, fix it!" This is the ultimate no-no.
Don't even utter a variation on the phrase.
You will be taken at your word.
*Before going to the yard, try to
understand the problem you want fixed.
Even if you're a neophyte boater, this
should not be as difficult as it sounds.
Try to narrow down the problem (if
you're a true mariner, this instinct should
become part of your psyche anyway).
Write down trouble areas along with
any questions you might have for
boatyardpersonnel. Remember, it's your
boat, so no question is too dumb.
SIf you're handed a contract to sign,
review it carefully. Again, don'tbe afraid
to ask questions. Read the fine print.
*In the same vein, ask about
warranties on the workbeingperformed
and on the products used. Get as much
detail as possible on how the yard plans
to honor them and how you'll deal with
these warranties if your boat should go
to a location that makes it impractical or
impossible for the yard to service you.
*Don't be afraid to ask for updates
on work and estimated costs.
For the yard owner, I offer the
following advice:
*Explain to the boat owner in as
much detail as possible what you plan to
do to the boat, the length of the repair
and its cost. Personal note: it would be
nice, once in a while, if actual time and

Letters to the editor

Reduce speed limit for big boats
To the Editor:
Regarding Jeff Harrell's editorial on boat-licensing
in the January issue: Trying to issue licenses to all right
now would be a logistical nightmare.
At the risk of much scorn from my fellow boaters,
let me suggest that the speed limit on all waterways
should be reduced to slow minimum wake after dark.
Background lighting can be confusing to even
experienced boaters. Police patrol during those hours is
mandatory.
Daytime is different. Boats under 25 feet can usually
operate at the present 25 mph speed limit safely and
with minimum wake.
Cabin cruisers and large sport fish throw
tremendous wakes that are dangerous to all other
boaters. So I suggest that larger boats be restricted to the
slow minimum wake at all times. They are of sufficient

length to travel safely in the ocean at higher speeds.
The action on the Middle River is perhaps the worst
thought-out piece of legislation that I have ever run
across. I take two trips a day on the river to fish. Yet here
I am at slow speed with craft pulling skiers going full
throttle past me while I am going up river. What sense
does it make to allow the skiers to speed up and down
while the boat that only takes one trip is forced to slow
down?
Size and its effect should have some bearing on any
rules governing the waterways. Most of all, those rules
should be enforced.
Dick Bartholomay,
Fort Lauderdale
Require boating course before purchase
To the Editor:
In response to Jeff Harrell's column in the January
issue, "Many Accidents, no Licenses," I agree thatlicensing
could help reduce accidents and deaths on the water. But,
allowing anyone to purchase a boat and simply hope they
will take a boating safety course is like putting the horse

Sleek, fast craft goes by many names

NAME FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
Not that I'm ungrateful for the correction. It's just
that I'm willing to bet that had I mistaken a Cigarette for
speeding past a Sonic and crossing the finish-line first in
a big powerboat race, the Cigarette people would have
been on one phone accepting congratulations while the
Sonic crew chewed up the other line screaming to my
boss that I was smoking something far more screwy
than tobacco.
But I don't even do cigarettes.
"I deal with hundreds of boaters," says Jones. "And
that term is often used by the non-Cigarette owner, the
person who isn't into boating or even the person who
isn't interested in boating. I hear it all the time."
So call that sleek powerboat what you will. But
remember that a Sonic is not a Scarab and a Scarab is not
a Cigarette.
Just keep in mind that it was a man with a real name
who was responsible for killing those other men. And you

before the cart.
Might it not be more practical for a person to be
required to take a boating safety course before purchasing
a boat? After the boater has passed the course, it could be
mandatory that a Coast Guard or Power Squadron
certificate be presented to the boat dealer before the vessel
is turned over to the buyer. That way, it is hoped, people
would come onto the water with some idea of what is
expected of them. Whether they would abide with what
they have learned would remain to be seen, but they
would have at least started out on the right course.

Boating guides advise on manatee protection

MANATEE FROM P. 1
researchers.
Dade came in fourth for the total number of deaths
with 14 carcasses recovered, five of which were killed
by boaters. Palm Beach is in eighth place with six
manatees killed, one by watercraft. Broward ranks
eleventh.
Although Broward has one of the lowest watercraft
death rates, the numbers can be misleading, Frolich
said.
In addition to its zero death toll for watercraft-
related collisions in 1997, two manatees in Broward
were killed by boats in 1993, three in 1994, none in 1995
and one in 1996, Frohlich said.
"This agency has been keeping records since 1974,"
he said "I wouldn't make that assumption that the
speed laws are workingbecause there's not abig enough
difference over the years to make an accurate
observation."
Scott Willis, a spokesman for the DEP-funded
Florida Marine Research Institute in St. Petersburg, said
that the collision rate in Broward and throughout the
state has remained relatively stable.
"It's still fairly high, but the boating community has
been doing a good job when it comes to educating
themselves," he said.
The DEP has taken steps to inform the public by
distributing guides on boating, diving and snorkeling
around manatees.
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida
also provides free, 112-page Broward safe boating guides
thatinclude maps of manatee protection zones, Herhold
said.
Each year, the organization distributes more than

To avoid disturbing the marine mammals, Save the
Manatee Club has the following tips for boaters and jet skiers:
*Abide posted speed zone signs.
Wearpolarized sunglasses to reduce glare on the water's
surface, enabling operators to see manatees more easily.
Because manatees are more likely tobe found in shallow,
slow-moving rivers, estuaries, lagoons and coastal areas,
boaters should try to stay in deep-water channels. They
should also avoid boating over seagrass beds.
*When operating watercraft, remain at least 50 feet away
from a manatee.
*Water skiers should choose areas that manatees do not
use or cannot enter, such as land-locked lakes.
*Do not discard monofilament lines, hooks or any other
litter in the water. Manatees can ingest or become entangled
in the debris, causing them to be injured or die.
For more information free guides on boating, diving and
snorkeling around manatees are available from the
Department of Environmental Protection. Call (813) 896-8626
and ask for the education office. Or write to the Florida Marine
Research Institute, Education Office, 100 Eighth Ave. SE, St.
Petersburg, FL 33701.
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida also
distributes Broward safe boating guides at no charge. Call
(954) 524-2733.

20,000 copies at various events, boat shows and fishing
tournaments, Herhold said.
"I think having zero watercraft-related deaths speaks
well of local boaters," he said. "When these speed laws
went into effect certain people didn't understand why
the rules were needed. Some still don't, but it's obvious
that many have come to accept the regulations."

Students learn navigational basics by studying Whitbread race

WHITBREAD FROM P. 1
capped off at the spring stopover when the students will
take field trips to the welcome village to meet with crews
and tour the boats, she said.
The village will also have an education pavilion
sponsored by the Institute of Marine Science. Lectures
will take place there and classroom projects made by the
youngsters will be on display, said Gale Myers, program
director of the institute.
Mitchell Comiskey, a science teacher at Parkway
Middle, said his students have each adopted a vessel
and are charting its daily progress.
Comiskey sees the Whitbread as a good backdrop
for lessons in weather, oceanography and ecology. "The
race is the hook that grabs their attention," he said.
Douglas, the 12-year-old in Comiskey's class, praises
the program. "It's the best experiment we've ever done,"
she said.
Classmate Roxanne Lamendola said she really liked
getting to select her own boat to follow in the race.
"We're learning lots of stuff, like how the crews only

pack what they need after visiting each port and how
they won't overload the boats," said Lamendola, 11.
Student Jason Campbell, 12, said he's learning how
to navigate and use maps. "It's really fascinating."
Jim Sanderson, who teaches marine science at New
River Middle Schoolin Fort Lauderdale, said his students
are excited too. They're presently using the curriculum
to examine ocean currents and wind patterns, he said.
A licensed yacht captain, Sanderson thinks the
program is well suited to New River, a marine sciences
magnet school.
"It's excellent. It's given me a chance to relate my
own personal experiences at sea to the students as well."
Myers believes the Whitbread curriculum won't
end with the local stopover in April, or just be confined
to Broward. The institute is meeting with education
officials in San Diego and Seattle, where the organization
has. offices, to begin implementing the programs in
schools there, he said.
"We also hope this sets a precedent to use the same
format for other racing events," he said.

(L-R) Sisters Julie Eells and Debbie Ells who wrote the
curriculum now used in some Broward schools to study
the Whitbread race, and Gale Myers, program director
of the Institute of Marine Sciene, hold up a map outlining
the race's course.

Virginia maritime museum offers 'hands-on' learning

Destinations

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Strange sounds fill the room.
Suddenly, out of nowhere it seems, our
destroyer is under attack by an unknown
aircraft. The fate of the free world is in our
hands.
Lucky for democracy that it was only
a simulation.
The scenario was part of the AEGIS
combat information center theater at
Nauticus The National Maritime
Museum in Norfolk, Va.
The facility, overlooking the city's
beautiful Elizabeth River, offers visitors a
host of hands-on activities where they can,
as the ads state, discover the power of the
sea.
But plan ahead. A few hours at this
place won't do if you want to get its full
impact. Nauticus is truly an all-day outing.
The 120,000-square-feet center houses
a multi-level showcase of the world's
oceans. The tour starts with a long escalator
ride upstairs. From there, guests can trek
through dozens of exhibits, many of which
are interactive.
Displays range from endangered sea
creatures to the simulated battle aboard a
command bridge called the Aegis-class
destroyer. Guests can scan the Elizabeth
River through telescopes while standing
on an actual ship's bridge; test their skills
at navigating or make their own boats in
the Lego play area.
There are also several theaters,
including two giant, wide-screen
auditoriums where-"The Living Sea" and
"Search for GreatWhite Sharks" are played
continuously throughout the day.
Elsewhere, there's a group virtual

Visitors to Nauticus in Norfolk, Va.

reality adventure where folks step inside a
sleek submersible that will take them to
the depths of Scotland's famous Loch Ness.
Your challenge is to navigate through the
undersea realm to search for Loch Ness
monster eggs.
In addition, Nauticus has a working
lab, a series of aquariums, touch tanks and
a weather station area where folks can
learn how forecasting has a impact on
shipwrecks and daily marine life. There's
even a mini-studio where people can tape
their own predictions.
And if that's not enough, the center
has two museums on the premises. One is
the HamptonRoads Naval Museum, which
details 200 years of U.S. Navy history.
Admission is free.
The second is the Tugboat Museum,
docked outside near Nauticus' main
entrance. Visitors can step aboard the
restored Tug Huntington, originally built

in 1933 by Newport News Shipyard
Apprentices. At one time, the boat assisted
in docking and launching hundreds of
aircraft carriers, submarines and passenger
lines.
Visitors can come aboard to explore
the engine room, crew's quarters, captain's
quarters, wheelhouse, galley and saloon.
Videos, photos and other exhibits
throughout the vessel help explain the
Huntington's past and the history of tug
boats.
Remember to save your ticket stub
from the Nauticus. It's good for 50 cents off
the $2 adult and $1 children's admission
price.
Nauticus isn't the only seafaring
experience in Norfolk: Most of the city's
attractions revolve near or on the water.
Other things to do include boat tours
of the area's shipyards and naval operating
base including: Fort Monroe, which was

constructed in the 1800s and used to
imprison Confederate President Jefferson
Davis after the Civil War; Fort Norfolk,
commissionedto bebuiltin 1794byGeorge
Washington; the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-
Tunnel; the Elizabeth River Ferry; Norfolk
Naval Base; and the Waterside Festival
Marketplace, filled with shops and
restaurants overlooking the Elizabeth
River.
Additional sights of interest within an
hour's drive of the city are the Mariners'
Museum in Newport News; the Virginia
Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach;
First Landing/Seashore State Park and
Natural Area in Virginia Beach; and Water
Country USA, billed as the mid-Atlantic's
largest water theme park in Williamsburg.
