Fighting Fish

Question: Do megayachts

spend megabucks?

PHOTOf/AYLOR JONES
Lou Ann Swartz of Boca Raton works on her fish-fighting techniques under the
watchful eye of instructor Marsha Bierman during a recent "Ladies, Let's Go
Fishing" seminar held at Marina Bay in Fort Lauderdale. During the lesson, which
took place poolside, a swimmer attached to the line simulated a fighting fish. For
accompanying story, please see page 3.

MIASF study aims to find out
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The Marine Industries Associationi
of South Florida has embarked on a new
study to determine how much money
megayachts contribute to the area's
economy.
"We're really excited about this," said
FrankHerhold,MIASFexecutive director.
."There's been a lot of mystery and
mystique associated with these vessels.
--Our researchltshould enable-us.4e-better- -
. .'uri'derand this unique industry."
T he IIASF intends to kick off its
project at the Fort Lauderdale
International Boat Show, which runs Oct.
30 to Nov. 3. The event is expected to
have the largest collection of superyachts,
80 feet and above, anywhere in the world.
There will about 150 vessels on displaying
that category, Herhold said.
In addition to the show, other data
for the study will be furnished through
various industry sources, he said.
Once completed, the research should
give association officials a blueprint on
how much income these boats bring to
the community, how to retain that
business and how to expand on it, he
said.
The report should also help greater
Fort Lauderdale compete in a growing,
competitive marketplace, he said.
It's no secret that several cities want
to snatch away the area's existing

megayacht business, including Nassau,
Bahamas; Tampa, Charleston, S.C.;
Connecticut and Rhode Island.
So far, any attempts to lure in
commerce seems to have had no affect on
Fort Lauderdale. The city still remains the
iiegayacht capital of the world, Herhold
said.
The survey could give the area an
extra edge in future dealings. "We believe
thatthisis going tobe the first, all-inclusive
survey ever done by a marine trades
assleiationa," Herhold said. "We need to
learn as much as we can about why we
currently have that status and how to
keep it," he said.
Already, the MIASF knows thatmuch
of Fort Lauderdale's present popularity
amongst megayacht.owners is due to its-
large' number of marine elevators anid
other services. Crews.and boat.owners
also enjoy staying in the area.
"We do everything here," Herhold
said. "We build, service, sell, charter. It's
like a diamond. Every time you turn it
around, there are always new facets."
The study should be finished this
winter, said Tom Murray, an economist
from Tampa who was hired by the MIASF
to perform the survey.
Murrayhas performed studies for the
MIASF in the past, including one on the
economic impact of the marine industry

House that once gave aid to boaters gets helping hand

Renovation to close structure.
for several months
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
This article is part of an ongoing series
highlighting interesting places along South
Florida's waterfront community.
A house that once served as a haven
for shipwreck survivors is tentatively
scheduled to close in December so that
crews can give the structure a muchneeded
face lift.
Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge is
expected to re-open in the late spring,
when work is completed. But visitors can
still tour the place in November.
The residence, on picturesque
Hutchinson's Island, dates back to 1876
and is the oldest standing wooden
structure in Martin County.
At one time, 10 such houses dotted
the eastern seaboard from South Carolina
t toKey West. Gilbert's Bar is the only one
remaining,said Tom Prestegard, executive

director of the HistoricalSociety of Martin
County.
The structures were built by the U.S.
Treasury Department. Boaters either
found their way to the homes after
washing up on shore, or the house's
keepers would take their surfboats out
into the water to search for stranded
seamen.
Survivors who were lucky enough to
reach the homes were given hot meals,
rum, blankets and a bed.
At Gilbert's Bar, visitors can tour the
compound, which includes a boathouse,
main house and keeper's quarters. There
is also a lookout tower on the premises.
The main house is decorated with
period furnishings and photo exhibits.
Many of the items were donated by the
families of former keepers, Prestegard
said.
Among the displays are a restored
1876 fireplace, a reproduction of an 150-
year-old surfboat and a 60- foot flagpole

that can fly up to seven banners.
An upstairs dormitory in the main
house, once used as sleeping quarters for
up to 24 survivors, is open only to
researchers.
Prestegard and other supporters are
looking forward to unveiling the house
after its restoration.
The structure is badly in need of
fixing. "It hasn't been attended to in
around 20 years," Prestegard said.
"There's a lot of decay."
Workers will give the place an brand
new exterior, including windows, doors
and railings. The rotting wood on the
porch will also be replaced, along with
the interior's floors and wiring, Prestegard
said.
In addition, the house, now green,
will be re-painted white, "Just like it .was
in the late 1800s," he said.

The entire project is estimated to cost
about $300,000 with funding coming from
state preservation grants, Prestegard said.
To ensure that the house doesn't
become run down, it will undergo yearly

Seminar turnout shows that fishing is not just for men

Women line up for male-dominated sport
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
When Monica Maldonado decided to attend a fishing
seminar, it never occurred to her that she'd be taught how to
reel in a man.
But this wasn't some strange sort of love connection
amongst anglers. Maldonado was participating in a
demonstration on fish-fighting techniques. Her 200-pound
catch was a male volunteer in a swimming pool who was
pretending to be a large deep water fish.
Later, Maldonado walked away feeling confident that
she had tackled yet another aspect of the sport.
"Before I came here I didn't know how to fish at all," said
Maldonado, a New York editor for two magazines, "Power
and Motor Yacht" and "Boating for Women."
"This has helped me increase my knowledge 100 percent."
Such comments are just what organizers of the weekend's
gathering wanted to hear. About 100 women attended the
two-day "ladies only" event, held Oct. 11 and 12 at Marina Bay
Resort in Fort Lauderdale.
Most were Florida residents. A few, like Maldonado,
arrived from out-of-state. Some were long-time, experienced
anglers while others were getting hooked on the hobby for the
very first time.
Betty Bauman, whose Fort Lauderdale-based marketing
firm put the show together, called the turnout phenomenal.
"We had a feeling that there were women who would try
the sport if we provided the proper environment," Bauman
said.
In fact, this is the group's second seminar. The initial
"Ladies, Let's Go Fishing" eventwasheld inJuneand attracted
a crowd, she said.
"We came back for a fall seminar because we were
overwhelmed with so many requests," Bauman said.
Indeed, the Fort Lauderdale stop is only one of many
meeting sites that Bauman's firm, MetroMedia, now has on its
docket. The event has become so popular that more upcoming
seminars rescheduled inSouthAmerica,Mexico, the Bahamas
and Florida's gulf coast.
The next class will be held Nov. 17- 21 in Venezuela. Other
dates areApril25-26 in Fort Myers; June 7-8 in Fort Lauderdale;
Sept. 12-13 in Bimini; and Oct. 24-25, 1998 in Daytona Beach.
If attendance figures at the Marina Bay Resort inJune and
October are any indication, then-future seminars should easily
sell out as well.
Bauman believes women like the conference because it
take place in a fun, non-threatening atmosphere, Bauman
said.

"We have everything from classroom instructionby expert
anglers to fashion shows and cook-offs,"she said.
A run-down of activities at the hotel included sessions in
advanced blue water and bottom fishing; skills stations for
basic knot tying and tackle; a live bait touch tank; boating
expeditions; and exhibits where participants could purchase
an array of items, from a gold Marlin charm to clothing and
equipment.

The sea
contains
many perils,
some of which
L have become
universal
legends, for
those who
choose to sail
her. Murderous
i pirates, man-
wer eating sharks,
Si. i maelstroms
and of course
sea monsters of all variety are part of a
seasoned mariner's psyche of possible
deadly problems. Now, in the end of the
20th century, a new menace has entered
the mix that apparently chills the blood
of those who play and workby the waters
of the deep the personal watercraft!
Yes, many folks consider personal
watercraft (they shouldn't be called "Jet
Skis" because that's a tradename, like
Coke or Xerox) the most recent pariah of
the oceans. So much so, that states and
local communities are proposing laws to
limit and even ban them from their lakes,
rivers and shores.
Fort Lauderdale is reviewing laws
which would reduce the speed that
personal watercraft can travel in some
areas, while apparently allowing faster
travel in other places.
Meanwhile, the Florida legislature is
developing statutes which, if enacted,
would raise the ages of personal
watercraft users and renters, (respectively
the ages are 14 and 16 at this time) set
certain speed limits under specific
conditions in certain areas, institute new
responsibilities and insurance minimums
for businesses that rent personal
watercraft, and require users to have a
valid driver's license or picture ID.
In addition, within set parameters,
Florida would allow counties and
municipalities to restrict the speed and
locations for use of personal watercraft
even further.
So, what is personal watercraft and
why is there such a brew-ha over them?

Opponents see them as a nuisance, a risk
to navigation, a destroyer of sea walls,
and a "killing machine." To others they
are considered "just another boat."
For federal maritime purposes, a
personal watercraft is basically no
different from a bass boat or a 70-foot
yacht it is a vessel. Crudely put, in
most legal statutes which describe the
craft, the only feature which really sets
personal watercraft apart froni otherboats
is that passengers sit "on" rather than
"in" the craft (it has even been argued
that a clever design modification could
change this distinction as well). Personal
watercraft must be properly documented
or registered, follow all safety regulations
and rules of the road, and are subject to
the same federal laws and liabilities as
any other vessel under U.S. jurisdiction.
Intriguingly, this means the owner of
a personal watercraft can take advantage
of the unique admiralty rules regarding
limitations of liability for vessels.
This is how it works: Should a vessel
be involved in an incident resulting in
damages and injuries to others and the
owner has no privity or knowledge of the
negligence which caused the accident,
the owner may be able file papers with
the federal court limiting his liability to
the value of the vessel, and its contents
based on its post accident appraisal. This
is a complex procedure which should be
done with professional assistance and
must be performed within a certain
amount of time. But the procedure has
proved useful in the past, particularly for
businesses that rent out vessels such as
personal watercraft.
The way I see it, what really sets
personal watercraft apart from otherboats
is efficiency. The personal watercraft
offers a great deal of performance and
power in a boat at an inexpensive price.
This allows folks who normally wouldn't
be on the water the ability to own a fast,
highly maneuverable craft before they
are fully aware of the rules and the risks.
In fact, if any manufacturer ever
developed a cigarette boat that retailed
for less than $10,000, the complaints and

"Women are very anxious to learn."
Joe Howard, an operation and management consultant
for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's
Division of Marine Resources, said getting more women
involved in the hobby is also good for the state's finances.
"We're talking dollars and cents," he said. "People who
take up the sportpurchase fishing licenses and buy equipment.
This is money that is pumped back into Florida's economy."
The division has played a big role in both seminars. In
June, the agency gave MetroMedia a $8,650 grant towards the
conference. For the October show, $5,000 was allocated,
Howard said.
The funds were used to pay for instructors, charter boats,
advertising and other expenses. The monies came from a
special fund for aquatic education, he said.
"This is a good investment," he said. "Historically, it's
been the man's role to take the kids fishing. But that's not the
case anymore as more women head households."
The division isn't alone in recognizing the growing
influence of women anglers and their importance to the
sport's future. Government agencies and fishing groups are
also taking notice, Bauman said.
A U.S. Fish and Wildlife survey identifies women as the
fastest growing segment within the sport. The same study
also revealed that the two sexes fish for different reasons.
Women do it to gain more enjoyment from being outdoors

PERSONAL WATERCRAFT FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
indictments against such a vessel would probably make
the present concerns over personal watercraft seem
trivial.
While the age of the user has been argued as a main
factor in the dangers and destructiveness associated
with personal watercraft; it should be kept in mind that
traditionally a seaman apprentice began his career at
age 14, and had a lot more responsibility than can be
imagined in our kinder, gentler epoch. It is my
observation that on the water (or anywhere else for that
matter) no single age has a franchise on rude people
who refuse to follow rules.

with family and friends. Men are involved because they
want to catch big fish, she said.
According to a survey taken by MetroMedia at the June
seminar, 57 percent of the women attending were married
and 40 percent were single. About 66 percent had college
educations and the majority were employed in executive
positions, earning an annual income of $76,000 to $105,000.
At least 71 percent owned their own rods and reels.
Eighty-one percent reported that they owned at least one
boat. Another 6 percent prefer to fish offshore and 58 percent
travel away from home for fishing trips, according to the
study.
"We knew that there were 50 million anglers in the U.S.,
72 percent of which were male, making fishing the largest
participatory outdoor sporting America," Baumansaid. "With
the growing numbers of single-parent households, it is likely
that many children will have to learn fishing from their
mothers."
Marsha Bierman, a professional big-game off-shore
angler from Plantation, said she was thrilled to see so many
women turn out for the conference.
"I think it's marvelous," said Bierman, the weekend's
keynote speaker. "There's an enthusiasmhere that you don't
see with the men."
Judy Tyler, a controller from Davie, and Debbie
Stolpmann, a internet marketing consultant from Miramar,
said they were having a great time.
Both women, who are already experienced anglers, said

personal watercraft

The only real way to make personal watercraft as
safe as any other vessel in the ocean is to have responsible
educated users. With this realization, perhaps such craft
will begin to be looked upon not as a maritime peril, but
as a training tool for good boating practices. As an old
boat builder once said, "To all whose ambition it is to
become good yachtsmen, I would by all means

recommend them to commence their career in a small
craft."
Mark Ercolin is a maritime attorney based in Fort
Lauderdale. The information in this column is

Marine industry welcomes economic impact study on megayachts

SB YACHTS FROM P. 1
on Broward.
The megayacht report is long overdue. No one
knows how many of these vessels come through Fort
Lauderdale and the amount of their expenditures, he
said.
"Many of these megayachts are unique in terms of
their size and mobility," Murray said. "Really, they
haven'tbeen targeted through traditional boating studies
because these vessels are not registered with the state.
Rather they are documented federally."

Currently, there are more than 5,000 megayachts
worldwide, with about another 240 under construction.
About one-third are being built in the U.S., said Kaye
Pearson, president of Yachting Promotions, which
produces several boat shows, including the fall show in
Fort Lauderdale.
The boats are very profitable to the companies that
service them. The average megayacht owner spends
over $1 million a year to maintain and operate such
boats, said Pearson, who is waiting for the survey's

maintenance, he said.
To reach Gilbert's Bar, boaters can anchor across
from the property at the county-owned docks on the
Intracoastal Waterway.
If coming by car, motorists can take East Ocean
Boulevard from downtown Stuart to MacArthur
Boulevard, then turn right to reach the house.
Visitors might also want to tour the Elliott Museum,
located 1.3 miles north of Gilbert's Bar at 1825 NE Ocean
Blvd. The facility houses 23 antique cars, turn-of-the-

"Everyone who has anything to do with the super
yacht industry welcomes the opportunity to more closely
define the inventory of boats on a worldwide basis,"
Pearson said.
"Without question, we've seen an explosion of the
number of boats in this category within the past six to
seven years," he said. "With the increase, it obviously
requires more service and crew personnel and facilities
for docking."

Experiencing the Titanic through modern technology

Destinations

St. Petersburg museum
exhibit debuts Nov. 15
By JOE CURRERI
Special to the Waterfront News
In 1912 she was seen for the last time.
Now, history buffs can experience
theTitanic for the first time.
From Nov. 15 to May 15, the story of
the maritime disaster will be presented
at the Florida International Museum in
St. Petersburg, which is playing host to
the largest exhibit of Titanic artifacts.
"The universal appeal of this
exhibition is tremendous," said museum
president Joseph Cronin in a written
statement to the press. "A Broadway play
opened, a major motion picture is
scheduled to open, a CD Rom exists,
hundreds of books have been written on
the subject of the Titanic."
Much of the ship's allure is due to the
fact that in 1912 she had been hailed as a
feat of maritime technology, an
engineering marvel. The Titanic was the
pride of mankind, a ship so powerful she
was thought to be unsinkable.
Now, the multimedia exhibit aims to
transport visitors back to the Edwardian
era of 1912, considered one of the most
elegant periods in modern history.
Through visual means and audio tape,
visitors discover the Titanic, including
the modern day recovery and
conservation of her artifacts.
Remarkably, more than 300 objects
from the famous ship that survived 85
years at the bottom of the North Atlantic
Ocean will be on display.

Visitors will get a glimpse of the
Titanic looking just as it did on the day it
left Southampton, England bound for
New York thanks to the historically
accurate digital recreation that allows
the closest possible experience to actually
being on board.
"Iceberg right ahead!" This was the
desperate cry relayed from the crow's
nest to the bridge near midnight on April
14, 1912. Less than three hours later, the
ill-fated ship plunged, bow first, two-

and-one-half miles to the ocean floor.
Five generations later, the tragedy is
still chilling.
The discovery of the Titanic in 1985
not only revived the legend, but also
became substance for new stories.
At the Florida International
Museum, visitors will discover how
technology has allowed for the recovery
and preservation of these artifacts of
history for the future.
The exhibit begins upon entering the

museum where a 30-foot model of the
bow section of the Titanic wreck has been
recreated as it appears today in its place
below the ocean's surface.
A multimedia presentation in the
museum's theater coupled with a audio
guided tour sets the stage for the Titanic's
compelling tale.
The tour begins in the "Departure"
gallery detailing the optimistic launching
of the maiden voyage. People waved and

Sequence of human error believed to have caused Titanic sinking

"Copyrighted Material

This bronze cherub is among restored artifacts from the
Titanic that will be on display at the Florida International
Museum in St. Petersburg.
TITANIC FROM P. 17
cheered amid deep blasts from the ship. But as she slid
away from the dock, she almost collided with another
ship, the New York perhaps foreshadowing her
tragic destiny.
The next exhibit "Passenger Accommodations"
features several galleries which recreate portions of the
ship, including a detailed reconstruction of the Veranda
Cafe, one of the restaurants on board the Titanic.
Recovered pieces of the original Veranda and the Cafe

Parisienne are displayed along with ornate first class
silver and crystal. Such objects including china settings,
a passenger's ring and gold-plated chandeliers offer a
glimpse of the grandeur enjoyed before the tragedy.
A change in lighting signals entry into "A Day of
Reckoning" where the events of the Titanic's last two
hours and 40 minutes are portrayed through original
art, objects recovered from the wreck site and vivid
accounts of survivors.
"We were asleep when we hit," recalled survivor
the late R. Norris Williams of Philadelphia.... "For the
best part of an hour neither crew nor officers gave any
indication of the seriousness of the situation. When the
ship started to list, the order came to get into the boats.
Women and children first. The line was two blocks
long."
Here, the horror becomes apparent: there was not
enough lifeboats to carry everyone to safety. Standing
on the wood deck overlooking the ship's railing,
passengers surely must have come to the realization
that their fate was sealed.
The "Hope and Despair" exhibit continues the story
of the sinking to its final dramatic moments. The stern of
the Titanic rose high in the air, broke off from the bow
and then made its descent to the ocean floor, leaving
hundreds of passengers in lifeboats searching for a sign
of hope.
The elegant cast of passengers adds to the drama.
On board were some of the period's most fabulous
millionaires John Jacob Astor the fourth, George D.
Widner, Benjamin Guggenheim, who put on evening
clothes to go down "like a gentleman," and Isador
Strauss, whose wife Ida insisted on staying with her
husband. "As we have lived so shall we die together,"
she's quoted as saying.
The image fascinates: heroic men smoking cigars,
sipping brandy, waving farewell to their wives and
children, the music still playing as the ship sank slowly
under the frigid ocean.
The next gallery "Rescue" features the rescue of 705
survivors by the Carpathia. On display are initial news
reports and statistics on lost and recovered items found
floating in the icy waters.
"Myths and Legends" relates both the immediate
consequences of the sinking and the lasting effect it has

had on 20th century culture. No one event can be blamed
for the Titanic's demise, according to the exhibit's
message, which reiterates that a sequence of human
errors and oversights caused the ship to sink. Overlooked
details in construction, outdated lifeboat regulations
and unheeded warnings along the way all contributed
to the tragedy.
The "Discovery and Recovery and Conservation"
displays a model of the deep sea submersible Nautile, a
video wall showing actual footage of the wreck's
exploration. Objects at various stages of conservation
are also featured.
The final gallery is a "Memorial" to those who lost
their lives. Visitors will find large banners with quotes
from Capt. Smith, Ida Strauss, Benjamin Guggenheim, J.
Bruce Ismay and others, adding to 85 years of public
fascination.
