New rule proposed to widen bridges

Proposed plan
expected to aid
navigation
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
The Florida Inland Navigation District
wants to change the way bridges are built
along Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.
FIND is pushing for a rule that will
require new bridges to measure 125 feet
across, the same width as the channel. Most
bridges now lining the Intracoastal have an
average horizontal clearance of 90 feet.
"We're clearly of the opinion that the
lack of width has resulted in a loss of
commercial traffic and is responsible for
many accidents where boats have struck
bridges," said David Roach, FIND assistant
executive director.
The agency's suggestion is being
seriously considered by the U.S. Coast
Guard's Seventh District, which issues
bridge building permits in South Carolina,
Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico.
A proposal to adopt the new standard
is expected to besubmitted for final approval

to the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington,
D.C., within the next 60 days, said John
Winslow, manager of the seventh district
bridge program.
The regulation would affect bridges
located in all of Florida's waterway systems,
not just on the Intracoastal.
Having the structures span the entire
width of the Intracoastal is necessary for
safer navigation, Roach said.
Many of the 90 bridges along Florida's
Intracoastal Waterway, which stretches 374
miles, have horizontal clearances ranging
from 60 to 90 feet, he said.
Statewide, boats have been striking
bridges more frequently over the years with
19 such incidents recorded by the U.S. Coast
Guard from October to December, 1995,
Winslow said.
All involved commercial vessels, he
said.
Standard barges measure from 35 to 60
feetwide. Taking into account cross currents,
cross winds and other environmental factors,
navigating the Intracoastal's bridges is
sometimes akin to passing thread through
the eye of a needle, he said.
"The 90-foot clearance only provides

Statewide, boats have

minimal safety," Winslow said. "Many
commercial vessels are instead forced to
travel along the coast, in dangerous
unprotected waters."
Recreational boaters will also benefit
from the proposed width standards, Roach
said.
"Today's crafts are getting larger and
larger," he said. "We're seeing more luxury
yachts on the waterway."
Roach began questioning the need to
increase the clearance in 1993 after receiving
a letter from the Florida Department of
Transportation, saying the agency was going
to build a 90-foot wide bridge in New Smyrna
Beach.
Although Roach told the agency to make
it 125 feet wide, DOT replied that they were
sticking to their original measurement.
"They said that's the way it's always been
done," Roach said.
Roach didn't accept that kind of
reasoning. "The U.S. Army Corps of

Proposal to widen bridges expected to decrease accidents

BRIDGES FROM P. 1
Engineers design manual clearly states that
bridges must span the width of the
waterway. Those guidelines were being
clearly ignored in Florida," he said.
"Why no one has done anything until
now, I don't know," he said.
While waiting for the U.S. Coast
Guard to issue final approval of its
proposal, FIND has already entered into
a pact with Palm Beach County the
second largest owner of Intracoastal
bridges in Florida, Roach said.
The agreement, which was signed in
February, states that Palm Beach will
construct all new bridges with 125-foot
width clearances "wherever practical,
depending on cost, community approval
and physical limitations," said Edwin
Jack, a deputy county engineer.
Palm Beach entered into the pact
with FIND after it sought a permit to
replace the Donald Ross Road Bridge,
located in the county's northern end. The -
structure was designated to be 90 feet
wide, but the U.S. Coast Guard wanted
those plans changed to 125 feet, Jack said.
FIND offered extra funds if Palm
Beach would agree to increase the width,
but the county couldn't do it because it
had a deadline to meet, he said.
Beforeissuing a permit, theU.S. Coast
Guard told Palm Beach officials it would
have to ironouttheir difference of opinion

Palm Beach will construct
all new bridges with
125-foot width clearances
with FIND. The pact came about after the
county agreed to increase the width of all
new bridges in exchange for permit
approval to have the Ross Road bridge
project keep its 90-foot clearance, he said.
But not everyone was pleased with
the compromise. Several peopleprotested
the pact during public hearings, Jack said.
Most were concerned that the
bridge's increased width would create a
negative visual impact on the small,
quaint restaurants and businesses lining
the Intracoastal. Others were worried that
the widened bridges would entice more
commercial traffic, he said.
.Similar dissentis being heard in other
communities throughout the state, Roach
said.
But Frank Herhold, executive
director of the Marine Industry
Association of South Florida, believes
commercial traffic will stillbe constrained
by older bridges that can not bewidened
or heightened for various reasons.
"As an association representing the
recreational boatingindustry, the MIASF
favors any type of bridge improvement
that will improve the flow of recreational
boat traffic and reduce congestion at
bridge choke points," Herhold said.

The 17th Street Causeway Bridge: A proposed rule would allow wider boats better
access on the Intracoastal Waterway.

Shell Air and Sea Show returns to Fort Lauderdale

SBy BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Another military invasion is being
planned for Fort Lauderdale. But no need
to panic for the only concern is how to
claim the prime viewing spots.
Friendly forces will hit the city's beach
on May 11 and 12 in the second Shell Air
and Sea Show.
Last spring when the free two-day
show made its debut, mdre than 800,000
people watched from land and aboard boats
anchored off shore.
Mickey Markoff, the show's executive
producer, promised that this year's bill will
again feature an impressive array of
demonstrations on the water and in the air.
All totaled, there will be 27 military
and civilian acts with many performances
brand new to south Florida audiences. They
include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels precision
flight team, U.S. Navy SEALS assault team,

Making a return appearance will be

Exhibition, Polaris water vehicle
demonstration, Powerade waterski show,
Fuji Film Sukhoi Precision Aerobatics Act,
. TresCom Lima Lima Flight Team and the
U.S. Air Force B-2 Stealth Bomber.
The show will also have a new location.
The 1995 event was held between Sunrise
Boulevard and Port Everglades.
This year, the extravaganza will move
further north, to a four-mile stretch of beach
between Oakland Park Boulevard and the
S17th Street Causeway.
The new site is much better because it
won't interfere with air traffic at
Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International
Airport, and will give spectator boats better
access, said Markoff, who is president of
MDM Group Ltd. and did promotions for
the Chicago air and sea show before coming
to south Florida.
"The timing was right," he said. "The
-city's officials were trying to charigetheir
image as a haven for spring breakers. The
air and sea show is a family-oriented event."
Francine Mason, spokesperson for the

Proposed high-tech

Project to be scaled down
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
.Luxury yacht owners will have to wait another year
before they can dock their crafts at a proposed high-tech
marina in Fort Lauderdale.
City officials had planned to complete the new Las Olas
Marina this fall. Now it's more likely that the project won't be
open to the public until summer, 1997, said Chris Zimmerman,
a city architect.
The city can't afford to build the facility according to its
original design, a development that has delayed the project,
Zimmerman said.
During the past four years, the Las Olas Marina project
has struggled to get off the ground. Under the plan, the
existing marina at97 Las Olas Circle would be torn down and
replaced with a 52-slip, state-of-the-art facility that could
accommodate large vessels.
City officials had initially planned to spend about $1.8
million on the marina, then boosted the budget to $2.8 million.
But when five bids were submitted earlier this year, the
lowest estimate was $3.8 million $1 million more than the
city can spend, Zimmerman said
Project consultant Ronald E. Stroud, Sr. has been
instructed to revise the marina's design so that it has a better
chance of coming in under the allocated funding. The city has
not set a date for the second set of bids, Zimmerman said.
"We believe that Mr. Stroud's consulting firm went a bit
overboard," Zimmerman said. "They were doing things such
a specifying a concrete mixture with a 75-year life span that

marina delayed for second bid process

the Florida Department of Transportation doesn't even use."
Despite the setbacks, the city still has faith in Stroud's
ability, Zimmerman said.
Stroud, chairman of International Marina Resources Inc.
in Fort Lauderdale, is probably best known locally for having
the run the Pier 66 Marina in Fort Lauderdale for 29 years.
Since establishing his own company in 1976, Stroud's
accomplishments have included designing the first marina in
Singapore, along with marinas at Sunset Harbor in Miami
Beach, Sea Ranches in Boca Raton, Jonathan's Landing in
Jupiter and Indian River Plantation in Stuart.
"We selected Mr. Stroud because we not only liked his
knowledge of marine facilities, we liked hispastmanagement
experience of marinas as well," Zimmerman said
Stroud's revised plans won't affect the facility's aesthetics
or the amenities that have been promised to boat owners,
Zimmerman said. The plans are being re-arranged so that
construction will be done in a more effective manner, he said.
"We're also bringing in more vendors so we can have
more competitive bidding," he said.
The new marina will function mainly as a transient place
of dockage, rather than a boat storage facility. Its 52 slips will
range in size from 30 to 90 feet, with the majority
accommodating vessels 60 feet and over.
But what will really make the marina cutting-edge is its
planned security systems and a maintenance design placing
utility lines in a trough running underneath the dock,
Zimmerman said.
Believing that too many marinas are underpowered, the
city wants to provide adequate electricity, including two

phone outlets at each slip, he said. In addition, each slip will
have hook-upsfor cable televisionand freshwater and sewage
pump-out, he said.
But before even the first shovel hits the dirt, the entire
design for the marina must meet the approval of the city's
marine advisory board.
"In my opinion, the original design was little too
sophisticated," said Bill Aubrey, a board member. "It's true
that we were looking for a state-of-the-art marina, but some
of the frills aren't necessary."
Joe Hessmann, who also sits or the board, said if money
continues to be a problem, he would like to see the city raise
extra funding by obtaining more grants and raising the
docking fees.
"They had the rates at around 70 to 75 cents a foot in order
to competewith other local marinas," Hessmann said. "That's
giving away Cadillac service at Chevrolet prices. It doesn't
make sense to try and undercut the competition when you're
offering a better facility."
Hessmann also expressed concern that if a
groundbreaking isn't scheduled soon, the city will loose its
permits and grants.
Fort Lauderdale is sorely in need of docking space for
luxury yachts, he said. The only available, existing dockage is
at the New River Marina.
Bob Beckoff, board vice chairman, isn't too concerned
about the marina's delays.
"What's happening now is very healthy for the project,"
he said. "We're trying to solve the cost problems before the
ground breaking."

Sea-faring pets
Cruising with cats and.dogs
means running a tighter ship

By DOUGLAS C. MAPLESDEN
Special to the Waterfront News
As both a boater and veterinarian I am
especially concerned about the welfare of
the pets we frequently take aboard our
vessels. Boating safety should apply to all
members of the crew, including the four-
legged kind.''
Like a perpetual baby, our pets depend
on us. In return they offer unconditional
affection. It seems only fitting that they
accompany us on our cruising excursions
when it's feasible.
The following tips may help keep your
pet happy and safe.
Proper medication
As a rule of thumb, before traveling for
an extended time, it's advisable to have
your veterinarian prepare medications
specific to your pet's needs.
Once on board, if your pets needs
medical assistance and there's no veterinary
hospital or clinic nearby, you can utilize
many items in your regular first aid kit.

For example, if your dog or cat is
suffering from a puncture wound on-his
paw, a warm, saturated solution of Epsom
salts can be applied to reduce pressure
from an abscess. Soak the wound or lesion
for 10minutes twice daily, making sure the
water is warm but not hot.
Dogs and cats can be relieved of their
pain with aspirin. The recommended
dosage is about five milligrams per pound
of body weight. A standard aspirin tablet
contains about 325 milligrams, which can
be safely given to dogs orally every' 12
hours. The same dosage would apply for
cats but only at 52 hour intervals.
Superficial skin lesions can benefit from
either antibiotics and hydrocortisone
creams. Don't forget to also pack eye drops,
bandages and tape in your safety kit.
Staying afloat
Life jackets aren't just for people, or at
least they don't have to be. Our Yorkshire
terrier weights about four pounds and
we've had to make alterations in the smallest

(L-R) Shirley Caldwell, Piper's owner, and Joan Maplesden prepare to cast ott wnile
Piper, a West Highland terrier, looks on.

personal floatation device we could find.
Terriers are not too buoyant in the water-
they panic and flail around. Short-legged
or long hair breeds are generally poor
swimmers, so try to get them used to the
water before your trip.

Larger breeds, by the way, float better,
are stronger swimmers and tend to have a
calmer temperament. Nevertheless, a jacket
will keep them afloat should they tire in an
emergency.

Have you ever wanted- to drive a
nuclear submarine? I have. 1 think it would
be so cool to cruise the strip just off the
beach, waving to my friends, radio blasting,
spray blowing

you'd care to

But of
course you can't
just hop behind
the wheel of one
Those babies,
you have to
have training. Just ask the commander of
the Navy sub that ran aground in shallow
water near Port Everglades a while back.
I imagine there are several ways to
learn to drive a sub. You could get a few
friends together, roll down the windows
and try to stay away from shore. But I
suspect it would better for everyone
concerned if you had someone to show you
how to do it. But what if no one wanted to
take the time? What if everyone said, "Kid,
I had to learnmthe hard way, and so do you."

to teach
Unfortunately, that happens more
than, we would care to admit. A father
takes his son with him on a few fishirig
trips and lets the kid take the wheel for
five minutes at a time. The kid doesn't
hit anything and the father turns him
loose with a boat capable of doing 40 or
50 miles per hour. They would never
consider letting a 12-year old drive their
car though.'
Aside from-the safety issue, there is
something to be said for helping
someone learn the right way to do
something. A teacher once told me, "If
you want to learn a subject really well,
try teaching it to a child." Children are
full of questions. Why this and why that.
I believe that one reason adults don't try
to teach their children how to do certain
things is that they, the adults, are afraid
they are going to look bad if they don't
know something.
But children don't judge adults like
adults judge adults. Tie your boat up
incorrectly ina slip and the local captains
mightlookatyou askance. Butifyou try
to learn theright way, you'll gain stature
in your child's eyes. Children feel they
are the only ones who don't know
everything.
Boating offers the perfect
opportunity, to prove that isn't true.

Towboat
By MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Columnist
It's a beautiful day to be out on the
water. Without a care in'the world, you
grab the family and take out the boat,
deciding to anchor off shore by the "third
reef" for a morning of snorkeling fun.
Afternoon approaches, and it's time to
return home
after a perfect
day. But when
you try to start
the engines, it
t sounds like a
S cat got stuckin
a garbage
disposal.
After
opening up the
hatches, you
realize you
shouldn't have
played hooky
from high school shop class. Fiddling with
the engines, you see another boat coming
in your direction. It is the vessel of Capt.
Wicked Willie "the Tow-guy" who seems
like a pleasant fellow, for someone, that is,-
who wears an eye.patch and keeps a parrot
on his: left shoulder. As his vessel
approaches, Capt. Willie calls out, "Ahoy,
mates!- Ye swabs need some assistance?"
Knowing that it could take some time

Terrors
to get the boat running, you ask Capt.
Wicked Willie for a tow back to the dock.
Your friend Bob, who's now living in
Fiji, always said good things about Capt.
Willie. Without another word spoken,
Capt. Willie lassos the cleat on your bow
and hauls you back home.
On the dock, after your return, Capt.
Willie hands you a bill and says, "Aye,
mate! This be a salvage claim. Ye owe me
half the value of this here vessel. And, if
ye don't pay up by tomorrow, I'll have
the marshals come and arrest the boat."
.As the captain pivots away on his peg
leg, the parrot lets out an evil laugh.
Capt. Willie does indeed have an
enforceable lien on the vessel. Whether it
was "salvage" or towagee" makes for a-
good legal discussion (a long legal
discussion), but it will not alter your
present problem. A lien now exists and
your boat can be arrested. Admittedly
though, unless you own a very cheap
boat, the good captain's claim to half its
value seems rather dubious and should
be addressed by professional counsel
before he sharpens his hook. Did I
mention he had a hook?
While Capt. Willie's are rare, they
do exist and there are precautions you
might take before you meet up with one
(and that goes double for the obnoxious

Consider a towing plan
TOWBOAT FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
parrot):
*Consider buying insurance for the vessel. Many
policies pay for towage and salvage due to breakdowns
and other hazards. It should also defend you in cases where
the price of the tow is "overreaching" (a fancy term for "too
expensive)."
e Consider buying into a special towing service or plan
(like a sea-going AAA). Even if you have a good insurance
policy on the boat, it may have a deductible and may not
cover all towing situations that can occur in your general
use of the boat (towing from your dock to a repair station
is a good example of this).
When you're looking for a plan, check.not only the
price, but the coverage area (how far will they travel to get
you); reliability of the service and their track record for

before breakdowns occur
general service. Find out how hard they are to contact while
you're out at sea. Check out the service's general response
time and whether they use the proper vessels to tow your
boat in a tricky situation. Mostly, check with satisfied
customers who are part of the community and still using
these services rather than old friends living in Fiji.
*Finally, if in the unlikely event you're caught in a
situation where you must use an unknown tow service,
get as much information on costs before you agree.
Naturally, if the boat's going down, detailed negotia-
tions are best left for a later time. Remember, it's prob-
ably situations like salvage and towing that inspired the
ancient Greek historian Anacharsis to write, "There are
three kinds of people: the living, the dead, and those at
sea." So, be careful and be prudent.

Teaching children to have a love for the sea

RANGE FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
During the 30 years I have spent on the water, I've
learned from many different sources including captains,
mates, friends, and even children. I could not begin to
count the number of people who have, through a casual
remark or brief chat, helped me hone my skills. On the
water, there is always room to learn, no matter what your

age.
Take the time to show a child a safety tip while on the
water. Answer questions about a fish you just brought on
board, and take the time to explain compass courses and
why they are important. Help a kid to love the sea as much
as you do.
You never know what you might learn.

Water-proof food containers, vaccinations a must for cruising pets

PETS FROM P. 5
Using the head
While docked, be sure and walk your dog. Cats too
enjoy a roam on land. Of course, it's only common courtesy
to pick up after your pets before properly disposing of the
waste.
When at sea, there are alternatives if you've planned
ahead.
A square of sod, dirt placed in a litter box or scented
puppy training pads can be used to prod your pet in an
unfamiliar environment. This type of training takes time
and patience. If the dog has just eaten a big meal, the chance
for success is enhanced. If the pet's schedule is off, don't be
overly concerned, just wait awhile and try again. Eventually,
with encouragement, your dog will be successful. Keep in
mind that there is no harm from a delay. As a reward, make
sure the dog receives high praise and treats.
If for some reason your cat hasn't been trained to a
litter box, do so before the voyage.

Keep them leashed
No matter how intelligent the dog, it's always wise to
keep the animal tethered on the boat. If the dog falls
overboard while sailing, he'll be difficult to spot and it can
be some time before he's missed. When docked, the dog
should be kept leashed to avoid fights with other animals.
Remember that an open hatch is a hazard to a dog as
well as humans. A frightened pet suffering from a broken
bone is harder to deal with than a person with the same
problem. People, at least, don't bite when they're in pain.

Hide and seek
Cats often hide in out-of-the-way places. My friend's
cat jumps into the far reaches of a storage cabinet and stays
there until the diesel engines on the trawler are shut down.
Unfortunately cats can also hide in dangerous places
too. If, for example, they have access to the engine room, the
boat owner must be on guard for hazardous situations.

Shore Leave
If you dock or anchor out and decide to leave your pet
on board while you go ashore, keep the air conditioner on
or provide a breezy, shaded safe area for your pet to relax.
Shutting an animal in a hot cabin can be as dangerous;
as leaving the pet in a tightly closed car.
If, despite your efforts, your pet gets too hot and starts
hyperventilating (short, rapid, shallow breathing, perhaps
even to the point of convulsing), it's important that you get
his body temperature down as quickly as possible.
A quick dunk in a pail of cold water or hosing the pet
down with cool water followed by a rest in the shade will
usually return his temperature to normal. When more
aggressive measures are needed, apply ice packs regularly.

Galley dining
When making up your supply list, be sure to include
sufficient brands of food that you know your pet likes and

is packaged for boat travel. Cans often rust from salt water
air and bags can become water-soaked. Packaged food is
okay as long as its sealed in air-tight containers. Remember
to bring along your pet's favorite treats,.which can be used
as rewards for special efforts.
Most important, make sure freshclean water is available
at all times. On hot days an animal is more likely to become
dehydrated quickly.

Foreign travel
Other countries have varying regulations applying to
transient animals. The American Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals puts out a booklet containing the
latest regulations and restrictions on all modes of pet travel
including re-entry into the United States. For a booklet,

write to the Education Department, 441 E. 92nd St., New
York, New York 10128.
Entry into the Bahamas requires a permit, valid for
three months, from the Bahamian Department of
Agriculture, a recent veterinary certificate of good health
and a valid certificate of rabies vaccination. They are
available by writing to the Ministry of Agriculture and
Fisheries, P.O. Box N-3028, Nassau, Bahamas. Apply at
least four weeks in advance of your trip.
Up-to-date rabies vaccination certificates are required
by most countries. It's wise to make sure that vaccinations
for all other common infectious diseases are also current
and will not expire while you're away.
The United Kingdom, which is rabies-free, has severe
restrictions on importing pets and requires that dogs be
quarantined for six months, even with proof of rabies
shots. Such an extensive quarantine is required because of
the long incubation period for rabies. This is not the case in
other European countries. In the U.S. where rabies is
endemic, we rely on vaccination to help control the disease.

Salmon steaks perk up springtime barbecue

By NANCY LYONS
Waterfront News Food Writer
A slightly balmy spring evening, still in the comfort-
able stage before the thickness of summer hits, is the
perfect backdrop for our outdoor barbecue. We focus on
thick and juicy salmon steaks, scented with ginger and
other good things simple, delicious and quick to
prepare. Grilled vegetables served in their own foil
packets are a more than an acceptable sidekick to this
tasty and healthy meal.
For dessert, I've included an old fashioned lemon
(or you could try lime) meringue pie.

Barbecue Teriyaki Salmon Steaks
8 salmon steaks or fillets (small bones removed)
1/2 cup light soy sauce
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons fresh grated ginger root
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 large minced garlic cloves

Place salmon in a large glass dish. Combine mari-
nade and pour over steaks. Cover and refrigerate one to
four hours, turning steaks halfway through.
Place steaks on greased grill, pour marinade over
them and cook about four inches from heat for about five
minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily with a
fork.
Serves eight.

Barbecued Oriental Vegetables
These bright and flavorful vegetables are wrapped
in foil, making cooking and serving a breeze.
5 stalks celery sliced diagonally
4 carrots sliced diagonally
6 ounces snow peas sliced diagonally in half
1 red pepper cut into squares
3 onions cut in eighths
1 burch broccoli cut into florets
1/2 cup vegetable oil

4 teaspoons soy sauce
3 cloves garlic, minced
Salt and pepper to taste

Divide all vegetables into eight large (24 X 12-inch)
rectangles of heavy duty foil. Combine oil, garlic, soy
sauce, ginger root, salt and pepper. Pour over vegetables.
Seal foil and cook about four inches from heat for about
20 minutes. The ease of this side dish is that it can be
served right in the foil containers, if desired. Vary the
vegetables as you wish.
A Caesar's or mixed green salad with your favorite
dressing would be a nice accompaniment.

Lemon Meringue Pie
1 nine-inch baked pie shell
For filling:
1 1/4 cups sugar
6 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups water
3 large egg yolks lightly beaten.
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoon grated lemon rind
For meringue:
3 egg whites at room temperature
1/4 teaspoon cream of tarter
6 tablespoons sugar

In a heavy saucepan combine sugar, cornstarch and
salt. Gradually stir in water and bring to a boil over
medium high heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to
medium low and boil gently for three minutes, stirring
constantly.
Remove from heat. Add a small amount of hot
mixture to beaten yolks and whisk entire mixture back
into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly, for two minutes.
Remove from heat. Stir in butter, lemon juice and
lemon rind. Let cool slightly for about three minutes.
Meringue: Beat egg whites with cream of tarter until
soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar about one table-
spoon at a time, beating constantly until mixture forms
stiff shiny peaks.
Spread over hot filling, making sure meringue is
sealed all around the crust (to prevent shrinking). With a
spatula, form attractive peaks. Bake at 350 degrees for 12
to 15 minutes until lightly browned. Let cool at room
temperature for at least two hours. Do not refrigerate.

A few tips for the pie
*After the filling has cooled, do not stir it before
adding mixture to the pie shell.
*Sprinkle a few graham cracker crumbs on the
bottom of the pie shell and press firmly before baking.
This helps keep the crust crisp.
*If making a lime pie, substitute lime juice and rind
for lemon.

London Suite continues at OffBroadway

Compiled by JENNIE BERMAN
Waterfront News Writer
Local producer Brian C. Smith got the exclusive
rights to Neil Simon's London Suite after its successful
New York run. The action takes place in a fashionable
London hotel. In the first scene, a quivering financial
adviser (Michael Gioia) is looking down the barrel of
a gun held by a crazed client (Kevin Reilly) who has
just realized that he's been swindled by his adviser.
In a humorous exchange, the capricious second
scene shows a how a vacationing mother (Beth
Holland) and daughter (Christine DiMattei) deal with
bulging luggage and dating.
In the third vignette, a famous T.V. star (Jessica
Peterson) and her ex-husband (Giola) meet for the
first time since their divorce six years earlier. Despite
the fact that he left her for a man, she still loves him.
Their meeting vacillates from comedy to poignancy,
which the performers handle magnificently.
Smith directed the first three scenes and in the
fourth, "The Man on the Floor," he plays the lead role.
Gioia assisted Smith in directing the played that has
Mark and Annie (Smith and Peterson) turning the
suite topsy-turvy looking for lost tickets. In his frenzy,
Mark throws out his back. Many laughs are ahead as
the hotel service manager (Phyllis Young Krakow),
bellhop (William Winter), a chiropractor (Reilly) and
Annie trying to help Mark, who's now writhing in
pain on the floor.
London Suite is sentimental, witty, suspenseful
and hilarious while Jay Thompson's set is exquisite. It
plays through May 26, possibly longer at Brian C.
Smith's Off Broadway Theatre, 1444 NE 26th St,
Wilton Manors.
