Blueway plan targets

Committee to seek
entry points to
launch small boats
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Residents and visitors could soon
gain access to some of Broward's
remaining parcels of untouched habi-
tat via a waterway loop that spans
along the Dania Cut-Off Canal, and
the south and north forks of the New
River.
The proposed blueway project
- also referred to as a greenway -
seeks to link a series of parks, historic
sites and other open natural spaces
adjacent to the county's waterways.
A major benefit to forming the
blueway is that the public would have
more recreational areas that would be
preserved from future development.
But questions about where to pro-
vide access and how to generate fund-
ing are still being worked out, said
Richard Grosso, legal director of 1,000
Friends of Florida, a statewide envi-
ronmental organization helping to
spearhead the Broward blueway
project.
"A coordinating committee re-
cently got done putting together a
statement on what they envision,"

said Grosso, whose organization has
a South Florida office at the Nova
Southeastern University Civil Law
Clinic in Fort Lauderdale. "Now
we're in the process of looking for
participants to serve on a supervising
council to help implement these
ideas."
Discussions on creating a
Broward urban river greenway started
in 1993. The county is one of several
communities statewide that are es-
tablishing greenway paths under the
auspices of the Florida Greenways
Committee, panel of industry, envi-
ronmental and government represen-
tatives.
In the Broward project, a steer-
ing committee was devised to help
create goals. It comprised a
cross-section of interests including
tourism, marine businesses,
environmental groups, employees
from various city and county depart-
ments and waterfront homeowner
associations.
In November, a two-day confer-
ence attended by about 60 people
was held to reach a consensus on the
best ways to establish the waterway
route. Grosso hopes many of those
same people will serve on the super-
vising council, which he wants to get
underway in March.

Suggestions to increase access growing population is another im-
to Broward's waterways included portant reason there should be more
building docks and boat launches, bikepaths, canoeing and hiking trails.

Blueway project to be implemented over a period of years

for a meal at the waterfront restaurant"
While open spaces are few, Herhold does
see avenues that could be made available along
the greenway loop, such as placing a dock at
Secret Wood Nature Center and installing boat
ramps along certain sections of the Dania Cut-
Off Canal near the airport.
"Maybe people wouldn't wantto live there,
but I can't see why someone would have a
problem launching their boat or having a picnic
in those areas," he said of the airport properties,
which have been condemned because of noise
levels from planes flying overhead.
Despite having differing opinions in the
past on waterway usage, Herhold believes that
the marine industry, environmental groups,
government agencies and homeowners can
work together on the greenway project.
"Everyone agrees that the New River is
one of Broward's most valuable assets," he
said. "What we need to do is protect the river
and ensure that future generations enjoy it,
while at the same time allow for new and
existing marine businesses to co-exist without
needless regulations."
But John Grady, who served on the
greenway steering committee and is chairman
of the Broward County MarineAdvisory Board,
said there are those hesitant about pursuing the
plan.
"Some of the advisory board members
aren't happy about it," said Grady, who owns
Grady Marine Construction in Fort Lauder-
dale. "They want to know about whether the
project will interfere with the north fork of the

New River, where there is a heavy concentra-
tion of marine businesses."
A majority of the board would support the
greenway if supporters draw up plans concen-
trating on the river's south fork and the Dania
Cut-Off Canal, he said.
"Those areas would be perfect for passive
recreation and small power boats," he said.
"The vacant areas in the north fork should be
saved for expansion of existing marinas."
Grady also cited funding as another major
concern. "When I was on the greenway steer-
ing committee, I kept asking about financing
and I couldn't get an answer," he said. "Some
of the board members worry about the money
and whether it will be a burden on the tax-
payer."
Once the supervising council is in place,
part of their job will be to secure funding,
hopefully a combination of public and private
dollars, for the project, Grosso said.
"We also want to work on existing projects
with government agencies and environmental
groups," he said. "We're not trying to re-invent
the wheel here."
And greenway supporters don't intend to
force their plans on anyone, he said.
"If there is an area that's already domi-
nated by heavy powerboat usage, we don't
intend to earmark it for passive boat usage,
Grosso said. "Likewise, if there is not enough
consensus amongstprivatehomeowners orbusi-
nesses regarding a project in their backyard,
it's probably not going happen."
Nor do greenway supporters intend to ask
or force waterfront homeowners to open their
rear yards to boaters. The project will deal only

encourage along the county's waterways.

with access from available, vacant land, Grosso
said. "It's not like we're asking anyone to tear
anything down," said Frances Nipe, a land-
scape inspector with the city of Plantation and
a greenway steering committee member. "We
want to enhance what's already there."
The greenway will be implemented in bits
and pieces, with some projects opening to the
public within a year and others possibly taking
as long as 10 years to become established, she
said.
"It's going to greatly enhance our quality
of living," Nipe said. "I've lived here for 23
years and it wasn't until five years ago that I

actually took a trip along the canals.
"Too many people spend too much time in
their cars," she said. "They don'trealize there's
a whole other world out there, an alternative
route so speak."
Blueway supporters say the idea is to pre-
serve the area's pristine qualities, Nipe said.
"We're looking to create a passive mode of
travel that is very respectful of the environ-
ment," she said.

Dania residents to consider fate of FAU marine center

Seafair site could become SeaTech
Research Center
By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Dania residents can soon voice their opinion on whether the
city should grant a 40-year lease to Florida Atlantic University,
allowing the school to convert the Seafair shopping complex
into an ocean engineering research center.
The question will be placed on the March 14election ballot,
but the straw vote is just meant to gauge public opinion and
won't be binding.
Seafair is owned by the Aragon Group, whose president is
Steve Snyder, also owner of Dania Jai-Alai. The city now
receives $40,000 a year in lease fees and an additional $30,000
annually from property and personal taxes.
Because FAU is a public institution, it would not be
required to pay property taxes. That means the city will suffer a
loss of revenue.
"We do support the project, but not at the cost of the
taxpayer," said Robert Flatley, Dania city manager.
FAU officials say the money would be recovered through
marina and parking revenues, which they estimate will come to
about $100,000 a year. Flatley said those figures are debatable.

The state legislature has set aside
$5.5 million for FAU
to purchase Seafair.

The city has made a counter offer to Snyder, proposing that
it instead receive half the monies exchanged during the property's
sale, Flatley said.
The state legislature has set aside $5.5 million for FAU to
purchase Seafair. It won't be known how much the complex is
worth until state appraisers finish their work.
If Snyder accepts the city's terms, Dania stands to earn a
seven figure sum from the sale, which would generate over
$100,000 a year in interest, Flatley said.
Stanley Dunn, chairman of the ocean engineering depart-
ment at FAU, said Seafair will make the perfect setting for the
university's SeaTech research center.
"It has ocean exposure, a marina and the Intracoastal
Waterway," he said. "It will make it much easier for us to do our
operations and give us the opportunity to work with the Nova
University School of Oceanography, which will be nearby at
John U. Lloyd State Park in Hollywood."
The department desperately needs the additional space.

Currently, they are doing research at the land-locked Boca
Raton campus and from a boat docked on the Hillsboro canal in
Deerfield Beach.
FAU officials hope to open SeaTech by early 1997. Projects
to be done at the complex will include research on computer-
controlled submarines, sonar systems and the behavior of met-
als and other materials in the ocean, Dunn said.
The center will also have its own high-definition television
and advanced communications laboratory, he said.
"We also want to provide a public area so that school
groups and anyone else who is interested can see the technolo-
gists at work," he said.
The department has met with several civic groups in Dania
and has received overwhelming support for the project, Dunn
said.
"We realize there are questions about money, but whenever
you do something like this there are always going to be hurdles
to clear," he said.
Seafair, a 4.5-acre shopping and entertainment complex at
the comer of Dania Beach Boulevard and A1A, hasn't fared so
well over the years.

Melrose Place nuaina-style?

Fort Lauderdale's waterfront expected to be i WI
backdrop of Spelling drama / )_

By BETH FEINSTEIN BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Imagine sex, intrigue and drama set against
a backdrop of palm trees, blue waters, beautiful
bods and big boats.
It might all be coming to television very
soon as Aaron Spelling Entertainment eyes Fort
Lauderdale as the setting for a prime time series.
If you haven't heard of Aaron Spelling,
turn on the tube. The Fox network is home to
two of the Hollywood producer's most popular
series -Melrose Place andBeverly Hills 90210.
He is also the creative force behind such other
well-known shows as The Love Boat, Fantasy
Island, Dynasty and Charlie's Angels.
Spelling's newest proposed project takes
place in a fictional Fort Lauderdale marina. The
show has no title yet, but a one-hour pilot
episode is expected tobe shot in Broward County
and surrounding South Florida locales in March.
That's exciting news to some marina opera-
tors who say the show's writers will find rich
material.
"I think it will be great," said Mark
Childress, manager at the Marriott Portside
Marina in Fort Lauderdale. "Marinas are sort of

like a soap opera anyway."
Steve Stiglbauer, dockmaster at the Pier
66 Marina in Fort Lauderdale, said Pier 66
would be the perfect setting for the show.
"There's plenty of interesting things that
happen around here," he said. "I think if they
asked me for some plot lines I could suggest a
few."

'Marinas are sort of like
a soap opera anyway,'
-Mark Childress,
marina manager
Cathy Petowsky, dockmaster at Harbour
Towne Marina in Dania, said while she's look-
ing forward to seeing the finished product on
television, she warns that people shouldn't
confuse the characters with their real life coun-
terparts.
"People have to remember that television
glamorizes alot ofprofessions," she said. "Still,

Q: I have an outboard engine that
overheats after about an hour of running.
Although it starts fine and runs smooth, it's
also sluggish and has no pep at all. Putting
in new plugs and points.has not helped.
What else should I look for?
A.O..
Fort Lauderdale

A: Check the propeller first for damage
or incorrect size. The wrong propeller can
cause a loss of power and overheating. Also
check for blade damage and replace if needed.
Look at the thermostat to make sure it's oper-
ating, and then check the timing for the right
setting. It's also a good idea to look at the water
exhaust vent to check the amount coming out.

Q: My twin engine cabin cruiser has a
steering problem. When the tachometers
are both on track or both on the same
RPM's, the boat has a tendency to steer to

port, which means I have to advance the
port engine to correct the pull. My tachs
seem to be working okay, but I must run one
engine faster than the other to keep the boat
in line. Also, the throttles are not in align-
ment when I'm running.
T.F.
Dania

A: Have a diver check the boat's rudders
for bends or damage. Look at the propellers to
check their condition. You might want to also
invest in a synchronizer to check the tachs and
engine RPM's to see if they match when
running. Also examine controls to make sure
they both advance and retard exactly at the
same time on both engines. You may find
some discrepancy with them.

Q: My 10-year old boat runs fine and
is well maintained. I've recently retired and
would like to take a few trips to the Baha-
mas and the Keys, and over to the west coast
of Florida, but the boat's age makes me
hesitant. Also, I'll be cruising alone.
P.H.
Lighthouse Point

A: Carry a good radio so if a major
breakdown occurs you can call for a tow. It
helps to also belong to a yacht club so that you
can sail in a group with help easily available
should the need come up. Going alone is not
the best of choices, as it's more fun to have a
group to pal around, with in the marinas or
while anchoring out with friends. I also carry
some spare parts aboard and a good set of tools
for just such an emergency-: Best of-all is to
keep your boat in great shape.

Pursuing shower power

By LARRY SPISAK
Waterfront News Columnist
Magician great Harry Houdini did things
that seem impossible to mere mortals, like
escaping after being chained inside trunks sunk
underwater, or hanging upside down from
bridges. Popular belief has it that he died after
injuring himself during one of his great magical
escapes. But I have another theory: Harry
mortally wounded himself trying to take a
shower on a boat.
No matter how large a boat is, taking a
shower is always a test of nerves and skill. I've
run boats that had salons larger than most folk's
living rooms, yachts that could easily seat 20
for dinner and others that housed discos. But
you can forget comfort when it comes to
bathing.
Showers on boats are just not made to
accommodate even one person comfortably. If
you bend over too quickly to pick up the soap,
you may think someone has joined you, only to
find that you now have the imprint of the hot
water handle branded on your butt.
Yachtdesigners are a perverse crowd. They
build yachts with walk-in engine rooms, master
staterooms large enough to play half court
basketball and galleys big enough to fit side-
by-side refrigerators. But when it comes to the
shower, you just can't take the cap off the
shampoo without banging your elbows.
People who have spent many years around
boats are often called old salts. They are called
that because they have given up trying to take

showers aboard their
boats. It's just not 2
worth the pain and
aggravation.
If you're not
careful, you can
come out looking
like you just went 10
rounds with
Muhammad Ali. For
example, should you
happen to drop the
shower hose on the
floor, there's pretty
good chance you'll
bang your head on the soap rack trying to pick
it up.
As if that's not bad enough, just as your
shower gets going, someone decides to do the
dishes in the galley. Now you'rejumping around
screaming for the culprit to turn off the water
while you try not to scald your personality.
Until builders include showers on boats
that are big enough to hold a small rain forest,
I think we should all shower on the bow of our
boats while we're tied up in the marina. It may
not be much of a protest, but I can guarantee it
would be a lot more fun.
And I'm not buying another boat until they
make one with a shower I can run around in.
Big enough to fit several people, even. Pass the
soap please. And try not'to drop it.

Ship's 'head' a widely popular maritime term

By DAVID WILLIAMS
Waterfront News Columnist
What is now considered the "head" or bathroom to the
landlubber originally served the ship's crew, which was
usually located in the forecastle. The latrine was located aft of
the crew's quarters in the beakhead, hence the name "head."
Picture pondering the voyage with the ocean rushing past ... you
can imagine.
Disobedient sailors were frequently given the down and
dirty job of cleaning the heads, a chore reserved as punishment
for some minor infraction of the ship's rules.
The head also refers to the top edge of a four-sided sail.
Similar maritime nouns include masthead, headsails and
headboard (and we're not talking about that piece of expensive
wood attached to the top of your king-sized bed at home).
Other nautical terms and their origins:
*Antipodean Day: That day that is gained or lost when
crossing the international date line at 180 degrees east or west.
The word has Greek origin meaning "opposite."
Overhang: The ends of a vessel which extend beyond her
waterline, the part of the boat that floats on air. The origin is early
Dutch.
*Destroyer: A light and fast ship of war, the mainstay of

Sea Talk
any functioning Naval force. Also called torpedo boat destroyers
when the vessels were first developed by the British and U.S:
Navies. The first American destroyer was the USS Farragut,
built in 1898.

Freeboard ... The term may also be
used to describe that period of time
when your relatives have overstayed
their welcome ;..

*Dodger: A device made of cloth and set aboard a yacht to
protect the crew from wind and spray. The word comes from the
Scottish "dodd" to dodge, and was first noted in the 16th
century. The word may also describe the only dry person in the
cockpit after a particularly large wave.
*Clew: The term for the lower comer of a sail that dates to
the 17th century. It is also the comer of the sail which helps you
remember the names of the other two covers.

*Freeboard: The height of a vessel's side above the
waterline. Its origin can be traced to the early 14th century from
the Anglo Saxon word "frameboard," referring to the board at
the top end of the ship's frames. The term may also be used to
describe that period of time when yourrelatives have overstayed
their welcome, a faux pas that usually known to the hosts before
it occurs if it ever does to the guests.
*Dead Reckoning: A procedure of navigation, using course,
speed and time to estimate position. It was first noted in English
use in the early 17th century and is a corruption of "deduced
reckoning."

agent who spends his spare time researching his favorite
nautical terms.

Prescription For Better

Diesel Performance...

DR. DIESEL
In 1993 the EPA changed the refining standards for diesel
fuel sold for Marine use. The side effect to this is that some of
the natural lubrication properties of the diesel fuel are lost
causing accelerated wear problems in diesel injection systems.

Seafair complex has history of economic woes

SEAFAIR From Page 4
plenty of people flocked there to eat and shop. But several
downturns in the economy and the public's fickle tastes are two
factors blamed for the complex's demise. Today, most of the
shops are gone. A marina, a restaurant, jet ski rental and a
seashell shop still manage to bring in customers.
City officials hoped the complex would be revised in 1990
after Snyder won approval to build a 185-room hotel. The
project was eventually placed on hold.
Back in 1993, Flatley complained about the condition of
the property, saying the city was considering citing Snyder for

Melrose Place also centers around a group of young adults,
most of whom live in the same apartment complex. Every week
the characters on the show are in some kind of trouble. Some of
this season's plot lines have centered around a stolen baby, a
dangerous cult, alcoholism and cancer. Of course there's also
plenty of sex.

If the pilot generates enough viewers when aired sometime
in the spring or summer, it could be picked up by ABC-TV for
a possible weekly series this fall. The series will be shot entirely
in Broward County for the duration of its run, said Gail Patterson,
vice president of production for the Aaron Spelling Entertain-
ment offices in California.
Patterson recently came to Fort Lauderdale to help scout for
locations. She praised the area as a beautiful city with a unique
look. But she declined to say if producers have a specific Fort
Lauderdale marina in mind for filming the one-hour pilot script,
written by Kimberly Costello, co-producer for the night time
soap opera Melrose Place.
"We're referring to the Fort Lauderdale project as Melrose
in a Marina," Patterson said. "It's going to focus on a bunch of

Elizabeth Wentworth, director of the Film and Television
Office for the Broward Economic Development Council, said a
Spelling-produced TV series based in Fort Lauderdale could
mean plenty of prestige.
"It's every film commissioner's dream to have a high
profile series shot in their area," she said. "It has the potential to
do for Broward County what Miami Vice did for Dade."
Miami Vice pumped a lot of dollars in Dade's economy by
hiring crews, supplies and services. It also highlighted Miami
Beach's art deco hotels, which generated a lot of tourists, she
said.
Wentworth has read the pilot script and although she can't
divulge its contents, she did say that it was a very entertaining
story.
"It held my attention from beginning to end," she said. "I
had to read it all the way through. I couldn't put it down."

St. Patrick's Day salmon replaces corned beef

By NANCY LYONS
Waterfront News Writer
Celebrating St. Patrick's Day in the Bahamas
doesn't exactly compare to south Boston's
holiday hoopla. No green beer or parade, but then
again it is much warmer in the Caribbean, and
somehow we always manage to make do.
So if you're feeling a bit adventurous and if
you don't mind deviating from the norm, why not
trade in the usual St. Patrick's Day fare corned
beef and cabbage for a leaner, but equally tasty
salmon dish? The avocados in the relish even help
lend a bit of the green.

Files of Salmon with Avocado,
Tomato and Red Onion
4 six-ounce salmon filets
4 tablespoons light olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper to taste
1 small red onion
2 small tomatoes
1 avocado
4 tablespoons chopped cilantro or parsley
1 large clove garlic
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Pour half of the olive oil and half the lemon juice over
salmon. Season with salt and pepper.
Peel and slice onion and tomatoes into thin julienned
strips, remembering to also seed tomatoes. Chop avocado
into small pieces. Mix everything with cilantro and garlic
and remaining oil, juice and vinegar. Finally, season with
salt and pepper.
Grill or broil filets over medium heat for about three or
four minutes on each side.
To serve, place salmon in center of plate and frame
with relish scooped on each side of fish. This dish goes
well with new boiled potatoes and stuffed tomatoes.
Serves four.

Stuffed Tomatoes with Shallots and Basil
4 large tomatoes
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup chopped shallots
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 to 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/2 cup packed tight, torn stale bread
Salt and pepper to taste

Topping forTomatoes:
3 tablespoons bread crumbs
3 tablespoons fresh grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon butter

Core each tomato and cut off top. Scoop out pulp and
save for later. Sprinkle shells with salt, turn upside down on
a paper towel and drain.
Add butter to a heated skillet, sauteing shallots for
about two minutes or so. Add garlic and tomato pulp,
cooking for about six to eight minutes until most of the
juice has evaporated. Remove pan from heat and add basil,
bread, salt and pepper.

Fill shells with mixture and sprinkle with
topping. Dot with butter and bake in a preheated
350-degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Next, broil
for about two minutes until brown.
Serves four.

Baked Fudge Pudding

This is one of the easiest, quickest desserts we
make aboard the Mimi, and the one most fre-
quently requested from returning guests.

1/4 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
1112 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
3/4 cup whole milk
3/4 cup chopped pecans

Topping
1/4 cup coco powder
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup boiling water

Beat together butter and sugar until fluffy. Sift
together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to butter
mixture, alternating with milk. Stir in nuts. Spoon mixture
into a greased nine-inch square baking dish.
Combine coco, brown sugar and salt. Sprinkle over
pudding batter. Pour boiling water over top and bake at 375
degrees for about 25 minutes. This can be topped with
whipped cream or ice cream.
Serves eight.

Murder-mystery puts super sleuths to work

Compiled by JENNIE BERMAN
Waterfront News Columnist
If you seek an evening or afternoon of unique entertain-
ment, do see Knockoff at the Embassy Suites in Boca Raton.
The murder mystery which calls for audience participation is
expected to play through April 9.
Gail Plotkin's clever script gives two performers excel-
lent material to work with, and she couldn't have chosen more
perfect actors than Robert Stevenoff and Monique Bourgery.
As the audience threw unexpected questions at the perform-
ers, they quickly ad-libbed with comical replies that only
improved the already funny script. Also, their rapid-fire
changes make you believe there's 10 performers in the play.
Here's what's happened: Otto Krocker, the pet supply
mogul, has been "knocked off" in his own home with his own
gun. Who's the murderer? Was it Betty Krocker, his gold
digging second wife; Candy, his beautiful but dumb daughter
from his first marriage? His pitiable secretary, Penelope Pill;
his shifty-eyed lawyer, or was it the sneaky competitor who
was after Otto's secret formula? Even Otto's gay interior
decorator could be the killer. Can you be a super sleuth? I was,
but I'm not telling.
For more information call (800) 675-7723.
*The False Witness: The Trial that Never Was com-
memorates the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi
concentration camps. This new play, written by Robert M.
Krakow, will be at the Pompano Players Theatre from March
1-12, and at the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Margate
March 15- 26. The play focuses on the hypothetical trial of
Adolf Hitler. It has gathered tremendous enthusiasm from the
community.
Call 429-1213 for more information.
*TheDramaCenter, 2345 W.Hillsboro Blvd. inDeerfield
Beach presents Kamp! Songs & Satire from Theresiestadt for
21 performances from Feb. 28 to March 29. Before World
War II was over, more than 140,000 Czech, German, Dutch
and Polish entertainers, artists and musicians were forced into
the concentration camp, Theresienstadt. The Nazi's dressed it
up to convince the International Red Cross and special visitors
thatJews and others held there were humanely treated. Behind
the facade, death, starvation and sickness overwhelmed the
camp. Many who survived found themselves on a transport
bound for Auschwitz, a death camp where millions of Jews
perished.
At Theresienstadt, prisoners stuffed bits of paper with
songs, poems and skits into nooks and crannies in the camp,
retrieving the papers after the war. These artistic interpreta-
tions were used to craft the play. Despite its setting, Kamp! is
an uplifting experience, offering theater patrons 105 minutes
of laughter, reminisces and hope.
The Drama Center is owned by E. David Eckert, M.D.,
whose parents are Holocaust survivors. This three-character
play is dear to his heart. Call 570-9115.
*Crimes of the Heart, the Pulitzer Prize prize winning
comedy/dramaby Beth Henley, will play through March 25 at

New York. Fans of the soap opera, Search for Tomorrow, may
remember him as sportscaster Rob Murphy.
Belkin's favorite role at Off Broadway was Haskell
Harelik in the Immigrants. "It was a dream role, he recalled,
"because of the requirements it asked of the actor to age from
age 21 to age 60 with virtually no makeup. It was very
challenging every night. One couldn't help being so emotion-
ally involved in the persona of Harelik that I literally had to
come down emotionally after each 2 1/2 hour performance."
In Dividends, Larry portrays the grandson Neal who was
never allowed to get to know his grandfather until circum-
stances require him to play nursemaid and family representa-
tive when the 83-year old is hospitalized with leukemia.
"Neil is an upfront person," the actor said. "What you see
is what you get. His attraction to his grandfather and curiosity
about his life is a natural reaction."
Belkin is proud of the fact that the show, which costars
Woody Romoff and Harriet Oser, is striking a responsive
chord with audiences. "We've received more standing ova-
tions for this show than any of the others I've done here," he
said. "People see themselves and their family situations which
may be why our audiences are so quiet during the perfor-
mance."
Belkin hopes to open his own theater in a few years in the
west Boca Raton area. In the meantime, he says he will
continue to take roles that are right for him.
Dividends continues atBrianC. Smith's Theatre in Wilton
Manors through March. This family comedy which appeals to
all age groups is the perfect vehicle for clubs to use as
fundraisers. Call 566-0554.
*How the Other Half Loves by Alan Ayckbourn will play
through March 5 at the Drama Center in Deerfield Beach. The
comedy of ingenuity and verve is about three couples, with the
men all working for the same company. But one of the
younger men is having an affair with the wife of the oldest.
The romance makes for some interesting moments.
For more information call 570-9115.
*The Scarlet Pimpernel, a new musical of romance and
adventure based on the novel by the Baroness Orzcy, is written
by the Public Theatre's owner director/producer Vince
Rhomberg. This premiere production, with an excellent cast
familiar to south Florida audiences, will be performed at the
Main Library Theatre in Fort Lauderdale, and plays to March 5.
For more information call 568-2243.
*MixedDoubles by Fred Carmichael plays at Opus Play-
house in Coral Springs to March 5. In the first act, a separated
middle aged couple are both out for a fling and, unknown to
the other, wind up in the connecting suites of a Mexican motel.
In the second act, a Golden Age couple, unmarried because of
tax benefits, is in one suite and a group of heroin smugglers is
in the other. It's clever, timely and with a playful view of the
ageless problems of love.
For more information call 753-7070.

Dania Pier scheduled to reopen to the public

March 18th opening date set for
newly constructed pier

By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Get the fishing gear ready. The long awaited opening of
the Dania Pier has finally arrived.
A grand opening for the city landmark is scheduled for
March 18. said Robert Flatley, Dania city manager.
The 870-foot-long pier was shut down to the public in
September, 1990, due to structural problems. Deemed too
expensive to save, city officials decided to raze the 30-year-
old structure.
Construction on the new pier began last year in February.
The project cost the city $1.9 million.
"It's a pleasure to have the pier rebuilt and re-open,"
Flatley said. "We estimate that this new pier should remain
open for at least another 40 years before we have to look at
making repairs again."
The Dania Pier is one of four piers open to fishermen in
Broward County. The others are in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea,
Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.

SCity officials do plan to have a restaurant on the pier, but
are putting off seeking an operator until they know the fate of
Seafair, an oceanfront entertainment and shopping complex
near the pier.
Florida Atlantic University is seeking to purchase Seafair
and turn it into an ocean engineering research center.
"The city wants to be able to inform potential restaurant
operators seeking to open on the pier whether there will be any
competing interest at the complex," Flatley said.
Formore information on the pier's opening date, entrance
fees and operating times call Dania City Hall at 921-8700.

Getting Your Boat In The Water

Will Be The Easiest Part Of Your Day.

If you trailer your boat to and from the shore, you know the routine; you
hitch up, gear up, gas up, and wrestle with traffic. Sometimes you have to stop and
fix a flat. Other times, you just need to stop and re-secure the canvas before it
flaps off into the windshield of the car behind you. Finally, when you've just about
decided to sell the boat and join a bowling league, you arrive at the gateway to
wide open water, a public launch ramp with a waiting line backed up to Orlando!
Sound familiar? Not if you store your boat at Thunderboat Marina.
Thunderboat customers only have to do two things: 1. Make a phone call,
and 2. Have fun! Lots of fun. The kind of fun you love to work hard at. With
Thunderboat's No-Hassle Dry Storage program, you just call ahead of time and let
us know when you'll be here. Your boat will be in the water, ready to go when you
arrive.
'Yeah, sure...' you're thinking. 'And, it'll probably only cost me my life's
savings.' Now, if you're one of those people who keeps their life's savings in an old
pickle jar, you could be right. But, by most recreational boaters' standards,
Thunderboat Marina's a great deal.
If you're interested in finding out just how affordable dry storing your boat
can be, give us a call at 963-2660. We'll be
THUNDERBOAT happy to make boating a lot easier for you.
