PREFACE

I WAs staying once for a few weeks at a farm, and
I received a letter from a native friend telling me
of his work in Capetown. In a postscript my
friend quoted the Xosa proverb, Ungalahli
imb6 yako ngop6yiyana." Literally the words
mean, Do not part with something of real value
for the sake of a trifle." It was a kindly warning
to me not to forsake old and tried friends for new
and untried acquaintances. As a matter of fact,
the friends with whom I was staying were neither
new nor untried, but that point does not concern
me now. It was the proverb itself which stayed
in my mind, as it seemed to me to express just
the very warning most needed by our native
people in the present day. Their great danger is
to forsake what is of real value for things of no
worth.
At this point I can almost hear. some of the
European critics of missionary work saying : "At
last your eyes have been opened, and you have
come to see with us that your efforts have been
a great mistake. You see now that you ought to
have left the people alone, securely intrenched in
their old beliefs and customs. They were far
happier and much better than these half-educated,
half-civilised school-Kafirs who imitate the
manners and the vices of Europeans."
Let me hasten to say that in urging the natives
not to exchange things of real value for trash I am
not making the tardy confession of misdirected
missionary effort. No doubt Missionaries, like






most other people, have made great mistakes, and
still have much to learn. I hope they have never
asserted the contrary ; but that oft-repeated word
that the natives should be left alone requires
no refutation from me. The natives never
have been, and never will be, left alone, and
the Missionary is rightly concerned to give
them that which alone can save, them from
the evil effects of the impact of an alien civilisa-
tion.
The fact that the Missionary preaches the
Catholic Faith does not make him blind to the
great danger of a time of movement and change.
To his sorrow he sees that natives who have
tasted of the new wine of education are too often
sweeping aside in hasty disdain many good things,
and are following things which are empty of real
value. It is the Missionary who has the right to
say, Ungalahli imb6 yako ngop6yiyana." It is
he who seeks to conserve the treasures of the past.
It is he who urges discrimination in the choice of
treasures new.
Now it is just for this reason that I value this
little romance written by one of our teachers.
When he first brought me the manuscript I feared
greatly that I should find trash. I was afraid
that he might have transplanted the unhealthy
sentiment of some third-rate English novels into
an uncongenial soil. I did not want to be hard
upon the writer, but I trembled to turn over his
pages. I had not read far before I discovered, to
my great relief, that I was on the veld, and that
I was in touch with just the very conditions of






life which now prevail where the old jostles with
the new. To my delight I found that the old was
not treated with contempt and that the new was
not treated without discrimination. The story
was simple, truthful, and wholesome. More than
that, the ideal was high, and I felt that this little
book would succeed in bringing that ideal to the
minds and hearts of our young people in a way
which sermons generally fail to do. I believe that
" Nomalizo will carry to many a boy and to
many a girl of our schools higher and happier
thoughts of the meaning of love, courtship, and
marriage.

ISAHLUKO I
"ULUNGILE U-BANGELA, MAMA"
"NOMIALIZO, Nomalizo, yiz' apa, mntanam."
Hayi mna, mama, ndiyadlala. IIayi ke betu,
lomnt' u-mama. Yintoni ke ? "
KAutate i-emela uyokundik6lela amanzi,
Dlamini."
Ukuba sasikb ngesabona kutabata i-emela
intwanazana enobom ebudala wawungati lishu-
mi leminyaka. Lentwanazana ibingumntwana
womfo olunge kunene e-Gcuwa. U-Mnyaka, umfo
wakwa-Dlamini, ibingumfo obekwe kakulu nga-
bamelwane bake. Ebeyindoda ezitobileyo enobu- ';'
b'ele kwanobutixo. Inkosikazi yake, u-Makfmalo,
nayo ibikwayintokazi ebukekayo, ebe mhle, ene-
ndaba nobubele, elungile. Ababantu bebenga-
piwanga nzala ngu-Tixo. Umntwana wabo ebe '*"''
mnye kupela, engu-Nomalizo. Lentwanazana ibi
ntle, inobubele nentobeko, itandeka.
Wahamba ke u-Nomalizo ukuya kukh amanzi.
Uhambe wahamba, wabona kuvela amakwenkwe
Samabini mganyana kuye. Ivakele isiti enye yala-
makwenkwe, Yim' apo, Nomalizo." Wahamba
yena u-Nomalizo, wangati akeva. Akazange aka-
ngele nokukangela. Yapinda lenkwenkwana
yakwAza, yati yakuqonda ukuba akayinaki, yakh-
uleza yafika yambamba. Ut6 umlingani wayo
ehlala pantsi, Yibambe, iyazidla." Yati nje
ukuba imbambe, wavakala ekhla u-Nomalizo.






Wazama ukuqAula abaleke, kodwa akabi nto
kuyo --Kute kusenje kwati-qapu enye inkwenkwe
ngasezantsi kwabo. Ivakele isiti, Mxabaniso,
yeka lomntana." Yati ifika yaseifaka induku ku-
Mxabaniso. Guququ u-Mxabaniso akuva ukuni
lungena enyameni, zalila kwangoko.
Zilile zalila wavakala esiti u-Mxabaniso, Hina,
Pindelo, mfondini, awusandincedi na ndibetwa
nje ? "
Ut6 u-Pindelo, Zilwele nawe. Yintang' ako
leyo."
Kwabonakala ukuba uyoyiseka u-Mxabaniso.
Wabona ukuba akuk6 kunceda, wajika weva ezi-
nyaweni. Yamhleka intanga yake. Yavakala
isiti, Kou uligwala, Mxabaniso. Yini ukude
ufulatele intang' ako le." T-
Kukuhlala kwamagwala kakade ukuvuyelela
,bantu ababutataka," wavakala esitsho u-Ba-

Akufika ekiya u-Nomalizo wabuzwa into alibele
yiyo, waza wati yena, Mama, indaba yetyelo
ayik6lisi, Kilmalo. Andibanjwa ngu-Mxabaniso ?
Ulungile u-Bangela, mama, oko endincede na-
mhlanje. Bendimoyika u-Mxabaniso. Andazi
ukuba bendiyakumti-nina."

mntu lonto. Akafani konke nalamakwenkwe ale,
lali yetu. Ngumntwana oyedwa kubantwana

ukuze ayokumtetisa u-Mxabaniso. Asikuk6 no-
kuba usile lomntaka-Mpambani. Kuyakufuneka
abulelwe no-Bangela ngenxa yesenzo sake esihle."

Hayi, mntanam, andiyitandi noko lonto.
Ukutika akuncedi nto mntu. Kudla ngokujalisa
umthki, endaweni yokujalisa umthkwa. Kulu-
ngile ukuba u-Mxabaniso atetiswe, ohlwaywe,
ekwe ngokomntwana weggob6ka. Lonto ino- c-vv kuvelisa isiqAmo esihle ngapezu kwezitiko."
Wafika u-yise ka-Nomalizo, waxelelwa konke
oko kwakwehlile. Latshona elo nezalo, kuba uti

U-MXABANISO WOHLWAYIWE
LAMAKWENKWE masiwaqonde. U-Bangela ebeyi-
nkwenkwana endadlana kuno-Nomalizo. Ebe-
ngumntwana womnye umfo ogama lingu-Tbzama
kwalapo e-Gcuwa. Lomfo belimvumile igama
lake. Ebengumfo ot6zamileyo, isilungi sezilungi.
Ubungafika kutetwa kamnandi ngaye kuzo zonke
izindlu. Nomntwana wake ke ebe kwanjalo.
Ubungafika kutetwa kamnandi ngaye ngabantu.
Ubungafika abantu beteta ngomntaka-Thzama
olungileyo. ]Bangapi abantwana esixekweni onga-
fika kutetwa kamnandi ngabo ? Lonto ayilindele
kude ixelwe. Nawe, mlesi, uyayazi. Lomntwana
cbe sisilulami somntwana. Ebengazange ati-nxa
emntwini omkulu. Ebengati yena akuphtiswa
i-tiki ye-swckile, ayidle lo-swekile, az' ati icitekile.
