NO SHORTAGE OF LOVE
by Edward A. Alexander
For many, Christmas will come and go just
as Carnival, without a,real thought of what we are
celebrating. Liquor will flow, the little money we,
Shave will be spent, "energy" including fuel will
vapourise and then......what? We will fall back in
our pre-Christmas frustration to face a most uncer
tain 1974. For most of us it will be a 'merry.Christ
mas, for even the most down-and out Dominican
will find some "water cask" somewhere, or pull a
puff from a joint and lose himself in the pseudo
happiness of unconsciousness; but can we say-'at
all that 1974 will be happy? Do we think that some
magical act-will be performed at midnight on
December 31st r973. Concluded on Page 3 -
: by'Tha Children of God'
You can have your little baubles
And your merry christmas tree!
But all I want for Christmas
Is the Spirit wild and free
For the San of God was given
And was hung upon a tree
And the only gift for Christmas
It His gift for you and mel
In the spirit in His spirit
Yes that's the life for, Me!
For it's only by the spirit
I can ever be set free.
Next week the STAFF of the STAR
will be having a CHRISTMAS holiday.
There will be no: issue on 28th December:
the next STAR will appear on January 4.

SPOILInG THOSE LOVELY PORTSMOUTH BEACHES C'.A.. Savarin
On a hot Sunday afternoon almost the first thought which crosses-onets mind
is 'taking a dip' in the sea or river as the case may be. If one h4ppens-to be
from ri, tsmouth, then it has to be'the sea, as the pull of the twin crescent beaches
of Swamp and Belle Hall is much too strong to be resisted by any true son or
daughter of Portamouth....
On Sunday 9th of December 1973., I responded once more to this Iabit-forming
urge to 'take a. dip and'having drifted through the'duaty unpaved portion of
Portsmouth called Lagoon, I came to a little bridge, tPond gru gru which is prob-
ably the most difficult to.negotiate if you happen to-be driving. I.was happily
on foot. - -
The bridge did not occupy my 'attention for any length of time, but a brightly
painted sign nailed to a" coconut tree nearby did. The sigh procla ied in bold
capitals, that the takingo-bf" sand' from the beach was strictly prohibited and 'the
letters .C.T.0. were monogramed below by way of signature. Immediately beneath that
sign, however, was a. large hole bearing witness to the fact.that sand'had recently
been taken from the beach in spite of the prohibition." *-'
After pondering a whil.eat'the havoc which we were wrecking on our most va3L.
able natural resource, I continued drifting along the road, as my destination was
Belle Hall, that most. beautiful of all Dominican beaches.-
I got to Belle Hall a. little hotter than when T-l6ft Portsmouth and beads of
perspiration were forming oh my forehead. Nevertheless, I found the ecercise'_n.t
invigorating and felt little' or no fatigue, although there was a. distinct sense 'of
relief because I had arrived; "There, in a little clearing used as. a .acking lot by
those who drive to the 'beach, stood a coconut- -tree .ar'd' nailed to that coconut .tree
was another of .those brightly painted signs: 'The Taking of Sahd from This. Beach Is"
Strictly Prohibited by Order C.T.O. Very good, I thought, the CT,.O.'was certainly
on the ',ball, or was it on the beach. "
I strolled along the beach towards the Cabrits, chose a convenient spot to
deposit my scant apparel and took a running dive into the cool and balmy waters.
I had taken in, as part of the scenery, the contrasting specks of bl#q, red. and'
yellow representing costumed bathers who, like myself," must'have either developed
the habit of taking a. dip on Sundays, or who had been driven out of t6eir homes .by
the Sunday sun.
All was quiet, .peac-ful ahd"sorene as I floated on my back coategplating the-
insignificance of the 'hurly-burly between 'the Government and the C.S.4. as compared
to the greenery of our towering mountains, the beauty" of th'e cotton wi.te clouds
and the realities, of the ab-joct poverty and humble dwellings of the pOpple who live
along, the route to this" paradise of--Dominican beaches..
I thought of Sunday Island anaVal Hal La and wondered whether th. plans, the.
deals, the concessions had take into account the development of the people of..
Portsmouth and Lagobn. Were there any provisions for usingn, Education and Train.-
ing,,, Health and Sanitation. and the other social amenities which are i such short
supply in the Portsmouth area? ''"I was thus :absorbed, when the peace. and quiet was
broken by the. bulldozer-like diroing, of some heave equipment.* Thus .-i turbed,,i'
looked up and7 down the'beach on6e more, and there on the wator-.s. edge 'ws a huge
four-wheeled, crab-like' machine', clawing away at the. sand. Impossible. I thought,
what of the sign that Was nailed to. the coconut tree? As I watched in'-disbelief,
the mechanical monster, a"1loader' I believe, dug out great scoops of -.and and dis-
appeared for a moment, only to return, and start scooping once more.
I-My day was. spoilt and so too, I thought, the beaches would soon bp, unless
some-more affective means wexro- found to put an immediate- .end to this:. dfilemeont-.
those..lovey Portsmouth beaches.
