CHARACTERISTICS OF FLORIDA CITRUS PLANTINGS
RELATED TO MECHANICAL HARVESTING

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CITRUS
AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER
UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
LAKE ALFRED, FLORIDA

G. E. COPPOCK and T. A. WHEATON

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The data presented in this report were furnished by the Florida
Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Tree spacing data were compiled
from the computer tape of the Inventory of Commercial Citrus Acreage
conducted in 1971 corrected to June 1972.
J. E. Mullin, J. W. Todd, T. L. Hill, and Dan Marquis, all of the
Florida Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, gave valuable suggestions
and assistance in the data compilation.
Computer time and assistance was furnished by Polk Community College.

PREFACE
A basic need in the development of mechanical citrus harvesting
equipment is knowledge of the industry and conditions that the equipment
is expected to operate under. Considerable data on grove characteristics
have been collected already in conjunction with present industry reporting
services. This publication assembles the data in a form suitable for the
needs of those involved in harvesting equipment development. It should be
of value to both researchers and machinery developers.
