EVALUATION OF FUSILADE 2000 IN EGGPLANT
FALL 1985

Postemergence applications of Fusilade 2000 (fluazifop p butyl) were
made to transplanted, nonmulched 'Classic' eggplant in the fall of 1985.
Fifteen plants were transplanted on 12 August 1985 at a spacing of 1.5 feet
apart in a single row on 30 inches wide, 6 inches high beds spaced 4.5 feet
apart on centers. Twenty-five feet long single bed plots were arranged in a
randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Soil in the
experimental area was an EauGallie fine sand with a pH of 6.8 and 0.8%
organic matter content. The experimental area was fumigated with 250
lb./acre of Dowfume MC-33 to control nematodes, diseases and undesired
weeds. Plots were overseeded with crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris) and
goosegrass (Eleusine indica) by applying 50 grams of an equal mixture of
seed of the 2 species and incorporating the seed with rakes. Irrigation
consisted of continuous application of water via seepage irrigation (the
principal irrigation system in the Manatee-Ruskin area). Fertilizer was
applied both preplant and as 2 posttransplant sidedressings in sufficient
quantity to supply a total of 250 lb N, 80 lb. P, and 240 lb. K per acre.
Normal disease and insect control practices were maintained for the season.
Weather during the production season was mostly normal for the area.

Treatments applied consisted of the following.

Herbicides were applied with a CO2 back pack sprayer. Fusilade 2000 was
applied in treatments 3 and 4 on 26 August 1985 and again on 10 September
1985.

Eggplant vigor was evaluated twice during the season: 9 Sept. after the
first application and 2 Oct. after the second application. Plant vigor was
evaluated using a pretransformed 0 to 10 rating scale where 0 indicates all
plants were dead and 10 represents no injury. Grass weed control by species
was evaluated 4 times: 9 Sept., 2 Oct., 29 Oct., and 2 Dec. 1985. Weed
control was evaluated using a pretransformed 0 to 10 rating scale where 0
indicates no control and 10 represents complete control. Fruit were
harvested 12 times beginning 30 Sept. and ending 19 Dec. 1985.

RESULTS

Postemergence application of Fusilade 2000 had no effect on plant vigor at
either of the rates evaluated (Tables 1 and 2). Control of crabgrass and
goosegrass was equally excellent with both 0.375 and 0.75 Ib.a.i./acre
Fusilade 2000 for most of the season (Tables 1, 2, and 5). By early
December, there was no crabgrass left alive in any field plots, due to the
time of year. At this time, sufficient goosegrass had germinated and
emerged such that the high rate of Fusilade 2000 provided better control
than the low rate; however, the control obtained with either rate was still
considered good and commercially acceptable (Table 6).

Occasional minor differences in yield existed at some harvest times;
however, these were usually compensated for by a larger harvest at either
the preceding or subsequent harvest (Tables 3 and 4). Additionally, there
was no difference among the handweeded check and the 2 rates of Fusilade
2000 in the total number or weight of fruit produced during the season
(Tables 3 and 4).

Results of this experiment indicate that Fusilade 2000 can be used safely on
eggplant at rates as high as 0.75 lb. a.i./acre without affecting yield and
will provide excellent postemergence control of crabgrass and goosegrass.
Although not currently labeled on eggplant, research, such as this, is being
conducted throughout the U.S. in an effort to provide data in support of
label registration.
