PROGRESS REPORT OF TIE 1982-83 CAULIFLOWER TRIAL
AT THE AREC-BRADENTON

Twenty-one cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. Botrytis group) cultivars
were evaluated in a variety trial consisting of 3 separate plantings during
the 1982-83 season. The fall planting was set in the field on October 10,
1982; the winter planting on December 12, 1982(-and the spring planting on
February 17, 1983.
Plants were spaced 16 inches apart in single rows in the center of
30-inch wide beds. Beds were spaced on 4.5 ft centers with irrigation
ditches every 7 rows. Cultivars were evaluated for curd weight and diameter,
the percentage of marketable curds per number of plants set in the field,
the number of harvests, the days to harvest from transplant date, and yield
in pounds per 100 feet of cultivated row..
Raised beds were treated with Dowfume5 MC-33 at 3.6 lb/100 linear bed
ft. Beds were fertilized with 16.5 lb/100 linear bed ft of 18-0-25-2
distributed in 2 bands 18" apart. This was followed by a full bed top
dressing of NitroforAS (38-0-0); superphosphate (0-20-0) containing micro-
nutrients at 80 lb/ton; and 18-0-25-2 each at 1 lb/100 linear bed ft, and
0.3 lb/100 linear bed ft of borax.
At this time only the fall and winter production is complete. The
spring 1983 harvest is underway and will be concluded by early Hay. This
report will give only the yield results based on the fall and winter
Fall 1982: Fall cauliflower yields were very poor due to unsatisfactory
curd quality. The percentage of marketable curds per number of plants set
were at 50% or less for all entries except 'Snow King 65', which yielded 77.7%
marketable curds (Table 1). In spite of good plant populations, yields did
not exceed 65.4 lb/100 linear ft of bed. Factors contributing to poor curd
quality (unmarketability) included fuzziness, splitting, and leafiness. Warm
day temperatures in November and December were probably conducive to these
characteristics (Table 2).
Winter 1982-83: Winter cauliflower yields were very good. Several
cultivars produced greater than 75% marketable curds (Table 1). Top yields
came form 'Igloo' (254.4 lb/100 linear ft of bed), 'White Rock' (237.7),
'Snowflower' (222.7), 'White Fox' (210.8) and 'White Summer' (191.9). These
yields vastly exceed those recorded for this location in recent seasons (1,2)
due to ideal growing conditions.
