Results of Insecticide Sprays and Granules for Corn
Budworm Control

D. S. Harrison and E. D. Harris, Jr.

During the spring of 1958, an experiment was conducted, using Golden Security
sweet corn on the comparison of insecticide sprays vs. chemical granules for
budworm control. The two materials used were Toxaphene and DDT. All sprays were
applied with a conventional small plot sprayer. Two chemical applicators were
used to apply the granules: (1) Noble chemical appl.- -row type and (2) Gandy
Hi-Lo appl.- broadcast type.

Table 1 lists the application dates, rates, and how applied.

Table 1. Amounts of insecticides applied in the experiment, using DDT and
toxaphene WP and EC, and DDT and toxaphene granules, for corn budworm
control.

Results

The plots were scored for budworm injured plants five days after the first
application of insecticide was made. Table 2 lists the actual number of injured
plants from the total of 100 plants per plot for each treatment.

One day after the second application the plots were again scored for budworm
injured plants. The results are listed in Table 3.

control one day after second application

Toxaphene Granules Noble 19.5
DDT Granules Gandy 25.0
Toxaphene Emulsion Spray 23.8
DDT WP Spray 24.3
Toxaphene Granules Gandy 27.8
Toxaphene WP Spray 30.0

Considering all methods of applications and formulations, DDT resulted in
significantly less budworm injury than toxaphene.
