An example of mural art in a colonial house

This beautiful mural (shown as it is being restored) is far more elaborate than
anything that would have decorated the walls of a home in colonial St.
Augustine. However, simple painted decorations, such as a decorative band
or border around the walls, were probably not uncommon in the houses of
government officials, merchants, and other well-to-do residents. Since
people plastered and whitewashed their walls, it was not that difficult or
expensive to do simple paintings on the plaster. We know from archaeology
that plaster on the inside of houses often was painted in different colors.
