2. To exercise students' skills in observation, listening and analyzing.
3. To encourage students to help preserve and protect historical buildings.

Material Required:
The Houses of St. Augustine by Albert Manucy (St. Augustine Historical
Society, 1962), especially "A History of Housing" pp.14-27 and "Design
and materials" pp.48-61
What A Building Tells Us produced by the Florida Department of State
(Sandra B. Mortham, Secretary Of State Seriesi, Numbers 6,
April, 1996)

Instructions:
As an introductory activity in the study of St. Augustine, students will
construct a five theme poster on folded paper. The poster will illustrate their
knowledge of the five themes of geography in relation to St. Augustine. The
making of this poster will help in their understanding of the area and the
architecture.
Geography Five Theme Poster:
Place what an area looks like
Location the relative and/or absolute location
Movement how people goods and ideas move
Region the cultural or functional area
Human Environment Interaction how people interact with the
environment
How to make the Poster:
Holding paper lengthwise fold into five equal sections
Put title at top of paper spaced evenly across the five sections
Put one theme name in each section
Write definition of theme in appropriate section
Create or paste an illustration of the theme as it relates to the topic/title
Write explanation of the picture as it relates to the topic/title

Vocabulary Words: Spanish Architecture (done on Tuesday)
Refer to Manucy's Houses of St. Augustine.
(St. Augustine Historical Society, 1962, especially "A History of Housing" pp.14-27 and
"Design and materials" pp.48-61.)
1. common plan..........a one or two room house on one floor
2. wing plan...............a central main room with wings extending out from
one or two ends
3. St. Augustine plan..there is an off-street porch entry, no entrance off
street
4. wattle and daub......sticks and clay construction for house building that
became the wooden framework
5. tapia (tabby).............man-made concrete consisting of lime from
burned oyster shells, sand, and whole oyster
shells
6. rajas....................... the wooden, and later iron bars outside of the
windows that served as a protective opening from
the house to the street
7. loggia ....................an entranceway into the garden and/or the house
8. coquina ...................a mixture of sand and crushed oyster sheels
compressed and solidified over time
9. paseo.......................the breezeway on the first floor, usually has
arches
10. arches ...................an opening in a room with a semi-circular cut out
near the ceiling

Teacher will give the students only the words. The students have already
been told to take notes on the meaning of the words during the teacher's
description of the homes. Students are to write out the definitions.

ESOL students have a modified curriculum and will do only words
#1,2,3,8,and 10

Homework:
Homework for TUESDAY night is to bring in materials to make a diorama
that will be presented to the class on Friday. Materials such as glue,
scissors, construction paper, pen, pencil, markers, crayons, and a
shoebox will be needed.
Homework for WEDNESDAY is to continue bringing in these types of
materials.
On THURSDAY, students will make the diorama in class. They will finish
them at home Thursday evening.
On F RI DAY the dioramas will be presented to the class. They will be
graded at the same time according to a specific rubric.
