European Age of Discovery and expansion into the Americas,
Africa, and Asia by:
a) explaining the roles of explorers and conquistadors;
b) describing the influence of religion;
c) explaining migration, settlement patterns, cultural diffusion,
and social classes in the colonized areas;
d) defining the Columbian Exchange;

Objectives:
The students will analyze and evaluate documents to determine religious,
economic, political and cultural reasons for conflict between various early
settlements in the United States

Approximate Time Required: 2 days (110 minutes)

Materials Required: (see below)

Instructions:
The teacher will introduce Spain, France, and England as world powers in the early
days of exploration and point out some of their major religious, economic, political,
and cultural differences.
The teacher will divide the class into 3 or more different groups (Spain, France, or
England). Each group will receive information on the following points of collision
and research it from the point of view of that country.
1. French Huguenots of Fort Caroline v. Spanish Catholics of St. Augustine
2. England's James Oglethorpe of Georgia v. Spain's Manuel de Montiano of
Florida
3. Dutch at New Amsterdam v. English in 1664
4. Acadians in Nova Scotia v. New England in 1745
5. Virginians v. the French over claims to the Ohio River Valley 1754
Reminiscent of the old television show and movies "Mission Impossible", each
student team will receive one envelope containing documentary resources (outline
maps, primary source documents, list of approved website URLs, their flag, etc.).
Each team will be given a set time (no less than twenty minutes; no more than
thirty) to accomplish the following tasks:
a. introduce the leader of your colony/invasion force at the time of the collision
b. sketch onto an outline map or overhead transparency your territory/colony,
the opposing colony, and the place of collision.
c. describe your colony (include any special goals, values or characteristics)
d. your estimate of the opposition
e. your summary of the conflict from your side's point of view
f. your view of what resulted from this collision [time permitting; teacher can
provide if necessary]
g. identify and share a primary source document that helps you understand this
collision or the participants [time permitting; teacher can provide if necessary]

Evaluation:
Oral Presentations
Completion of Outline map
