RELATIONSHIP OF PRICES OF STOCKER CATTLE, FEEDER CATTLE, AND FAT CATTLE

By: F. S. Baker, Jr.

Table 1 shows the prices of fat cattle needed to recover the cost of
cattle and feed with feeder cattle purchased at various prices, fed for vary-
ing lengths of time, and a feed cost of $0.55 per day. Expected average
daily gains are shown in the table also. Table 2 contains the same informa-
tion with a feed cost of $0.50 per day. Of course these calculations are
based on average performance, and variations in cattle and other conditions
may change the necessary selling prices from those shown. However, it is
believed that the tables will serve as a rough guide which is all they are
intended to be.

Examples in Table 3 begin with stocker calves purchased in the fall,
wintered, and grazed the following year until ready to go in the feedlot.
Costs per 100 pounds are shown for yearling cattle going on pasture in the
spring'and the cattle coming off pasture to the feedlot after the grazing
season, with the cattle purchased at various prices as weaner calves. Costs
per 100 pounds going into the feedlot are shown where cattle gain 250 pounds
from purchase weight as calves and also where the gain is 300 pounds. Cost
per 100 pounds going into the feedlot can be applied to either Table 1 or
Table 2 to find the necessary selling price as fat cattle. Table 4 shows the
same information for cattle purchased as stocker yearlings as shown in Table
3 for cattle purchased as calves.

Table 5 gives the live weight values of cattle based on various carcass
values and several carcass yields.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Calculations in preparing these tables were based on Experiment Station
records and experience of local cattle feeders. Mr. Winton Edwards of Quincy
Livestock Company was particularly helpful in offering suggestions.
