Mr. Wells has 22 acres in tomatoes and expects a good crop. W. L. Hill, of the First National Bank, of this city, left this afternoon for Piedmont, W. Va., where he will remain during the summer. Mr. Hill is very highly esteemed by all who know him, and his host of friends in this city will regret very much his ab sence. He will r turn next fall. Three of the students who won hon- ors at the Seminary this year were former pupils of Miss Gregory's pri- vate school of this city, which speaks in most flattering terms of this lady as a teacher. THE LXDGER notes this with pleasure, and wishes Miss Greg- ory many more such compliments A local merchant wants to know if the signing of an agreement to close stores for a given time means that one or more houses may shut their front doors and yei go on selling goods all the while. A Suggestion For Gainesville. The Pensacola retail dry goods mer- chant who fir't carpets his floors, asd provides comfortable and convenient'. toilet rooms for the use of lady patrons will surely capture the cream of the city trade. Such things are common enough in all the larger cities, and Pensacola is not too. small to adopt so wise and beneficent a policy.-Pensa- cola News. To 0ity Subscribers. All LEDGER subscribers in the city who have been hitherto supplied with the weekly have been placed on the daily list and will be supplied by car- rier. Any who prefer the weekly will please give notice. Those who fail to get the daily regu- larly will please report the fact to the office. Weekly subscriptions to the daily may be paid to the carriers, who are furnished with blank receipts, tf The Eleve Association Etectei afternoon officers .for tle S1] L.1 ecutive board are-Dr J. F. ECKlintry, Jr., of this city; i'. M. McQueen, of Old Town; W. E.1 Broome, E. Hailse and B. A. Thrasher, of Gainesaille. The society held a reception at 4 :30 this 'afternoon, which was a rery pleasant at,'ir. At Miss Tebeau's School-. The reporter of THE LEDGER at- tended the closing exercises of the above named school this morning and found the school room already packed with ladies anxious to hear their loved ones acqu:t themselves, and their va- rious friends cover themselves with. glory. The room was beautifully dec- orated with various kinds of flowers, creeping vines and evergreens, and these mixing in grateful contrast with the white robes of the girls, presented a scene at once composing and delight- ful. ' The exercises passed off without fric- tion, le: or hindrance. - Miss Maude Graham received the first honor and it was based upon pro- g ess, general deportment and implicit obedience for and during the entire term. She also- received a golden medal composed of a lyre surrounded by ,an olive wreath, the whole pen- dant from a gold chain necklace. Miss Nellie Hunter took the second honor for same accomplishments as Miss Graham, and was given also a gold medal, which consists of a shield surrounded by a wreath pendant from a parallel bar to which is attached a pit. Master Albert Eddins took third honor and was als> the recipient of a gold medal consisting of a shield surrounded by a wreath of wheat heads, pendant from a bar. His honor also was given from the same reason as above. Other prizes were given for merit in one thing or another, but we have not space to mention all this evening. The school has had an at- tendance of 58 pupils, mostly girls; the health of the children has been per- feet; owing in a great measure to a large, airy school room, spacious grass- covered lawns, and a large flower gar- den around the house. It is a good school, and we will say more of it another time. ~MA~ The Eleve The, third annual the Elev, Asociation of da l4elmiaruty securedd ball of lhe Odd Fell Fully a hundred ladi Ien were presicnt and enj iou IA the, u~iuo. Collins, state treasurer, was once dub- (bed by the Ocala Banner as a "theo- retical farmer Mr. Collins owns a small farm, near TallahasseL. This season he planted'the Burbank pota- toes, and he is now digging and sell- ing the finest Irish potatoes ever seen ia Tallahassee, realizing $4 net per barrel, while others araelling at $3. The yield is Itwenat bnrrils to every barrel planted. Mr. Col- lins did' not plant the potatoes for profit, but on the principle that it is every man's duty to add something to the material wealth of the commu- nity in 'which he-lives. A northern man who saw the potatoes sent a sam- ple to his home that his neighbors night be produce, in Florida. Col. A. J. McDuffie, traffic manager of the C. TALLAHASSEE, Fia., May 3.9.-The Senate has spent the greater portion of the day in the consideration of the general revenue bil'. Senator Hart- ASdge succeeded in striking o:t the "express clause" and substituting therefore a clause that provides that all express companies< doing business in cities of 15,000 or more shall pay a tax of $150, in cities of 10,0t0 $75, of 5,000 $,), of 3,000 $30, and so on down to cities of 1,000 or less, with a tax of $5. Hr. Hartridge endeavored to se cure the aJoption of an amendment provi Jing that persons engaged in the distr.bu'ion of railroad circulars other than the corporations interested should be tax .l $1,000, which was sup- planted by an amendment which fixed the tax at $100. An ineffectual at- tempt was made to ex, mrt dentists from the operations of the license, oc- Scupation tax, and an amendment was adopted giving cities the right to levy upon. the property of railroads and telegraph line; other than the tracks and wires for unpaid taxes and em- powering them to make their own as- sessments. The House having practically com- pleted its labors, has been in a highly hilarious mood all day, and little ,of consequence .has been accomplished. SA bill authorizing Brevard,'county to issue bonds for roads was passed, as was the one amending section 615, chapter 4, of the revised statutes, and . that providing bond trustees for the town of Kissimmee. The bill appropriating money for nmw buildings for the state Insane asy- -lum was passed, together with a num- ber of minor measures. The committee appointed to exam- ine the bureaus under th-e commis- slonerof agriculture, made a long re- port, but there is now little probabil- ity that Mr. Drew's proposed investi- gation of the various departments will ever come to anything. The Senate is holding a night ses- sion and to-morrow promises to be a busy day. A Hint to Alachua. Spcolal lo the OltizOn. URLAN DO, May29.-Some'speciment of home-grown tobacco were brought Into town yesterday.by Henry Carroll, raised by him on his place near Apop- ka The leaves were two feet seven Inches, long by fourteen inches wide, and of the tine texture so much' de- sired by the makers qf the high grade cigars in Cuba. Finer tobacco for wrappers cannot be found anywhere. Mr. Carroll is an experienced tobacco grower, and is of the opinion that as fine tobacco can be grown in'Orange county as that found either in Cuba or Sumatra. The stalks upon which the leaves were grown were five feet eight inches in height, and were from heed planted the last week of Decem- ber. AJachua can grow as fine tobacco as any other county in the state, and our farmers would do well to give the matter some consideration. The Discovery Saved His Life Mr. (i. Savannah Kews Special- TAL.LAKHASSEE, May SO.-The longer good democrats refle-t uponuthe reso- lution of Repre3entative Drew of Nas- , an county, son of ex-Gov. Geor-e F. brew, providing for an investigation of a democratic administration, the more thoroughly amazed they become over the fact that a man claiming to be a democrat and certainly elected by democrats, should be the author of such a movement, and tbat a house, a'so elected by democrats should per- mit such a sweeping measure to be rai'roaded through that body without even one member to at least question the propriety of such an undertaking, almost on the 'hresnold'of the cam- paign of 1896 The present legislature. as has long been the custom at each succeeding session, at the time thi4 resolution was introduced, had committees ex- amining different departments in the capitol. In the light of tt ese and other facts, it.is not to be wondered at that inquiries of this character are of- ten heard: Is it a raid on the treasu- ry? Can it be an attempt to band - cap the party in the interest of certain ambitious politicians for the next campaign? Is some ulterior motive concealed between the lines of this resolution? The mere mention of such a move- ment is thought by some to be sug- gestive of crookedness in high places, a direct thrust at, and reflection upon every democrat connected 'with the state administration, insinuating, if not really imputing, dishonesty' ill the management of affairs in ihe s'ate house, The resolution, as passed by the house, provides that the committee it seeks to create may sit during the re- cess and report to the legislature of 1897, which would hold every member of the cabinet under a ban that would preclude their seeking renomination, however much they might desire to do so; in fact, under such a condition of affairs, they could not open their mouths in defense of self, administra- tion or party. On the other band, those democrats standing for the par ty. would have to fight at a great dis- advantage, having been forced by' democrats into. a defensive position. where populists cr other opponents would hurl all kinds of innuendoes at them, and direct attention to' the fact that a democratic committee waW inW vestigating a decocratic, governor"~U.'Ild his'eabinet, .* ..' * '" clait is aTsd made'.that u er' ihe wording of the'reso ftiiontiere is' nothing to'preyent the com6ilittee in- terviewig8 aniy person, taking. their; statement, given merely -sOa'i opin- .ion, unsupported, by evidence," 'aid publishing the same as,' their finding. It is further suggested that, -as the resolution provides that each house shall elect its own members of the pro- posed committee, it looks 'very much like a "cut aid dried" scheme to do some work io the detriment' of the party or of individual'democraLs--or both. The public may rest a-sured 'that there is not a democrat in thele sate house at. Tallahass-e 'who fears the proposed 'committee, or any other power that mar desire to investigate them or their departments. In fact, they, invite a most thorough and searching Investigation, and will in every way known to them or that may be suggested by the committees, as- sist in this work. ' NoTE.-The Drew resolution was' killed by the senate yesterday. Apples in Florida. Cap we grow apples in Soutlh Flor- ida? Some say ye', some fa, no. The way to know is to try. Taber and other Florida nurserymen gave a list of five they think will, in a measure, succeed. These are the Early Harriet, Early Red Marguerite, Red Astrachan, Red June and Jennings' Florida. In March, 1893, we set out five each of these. Last winter they did not lose their leaves. Last season they made slow growth as compared with peaches and plums. This winter's extra cold took the leaves. Now they are com- ing into leaf and on the tip of one branch on au Astrachan, there is a bunch of blossoms-the first apple blossoms. How they gladdened eye and heart. The apple is not a prom- ising fruit for Florida, being mbre at home in a temperate climate; at the same time if we have a variety or two that will give us a few apples there should be no home garden without them. So will our knowledge of Flor- ida fruits widen by our experience for the benefit of those who Are yet to come to us, to build up homes at Pabor Lake.-Pabor Lake Pineapple. .
