BRONSON, FLA., June' ", 1878. Editors Gainesville 7mes; In my card pu-blished in your edi-f tion of the 22.l of May, I declared that the ;t idmcnt madeby "Veritas" in his letter of the 15th of May, was as Pfar as his remarks about the ille- gality of Miss -Mooney's arrest was concerned, either a false statement dr a malicious lie; that declaration I now repeat, and while declining any argument or newspaper controversy with the woman in question, I would' place before the public a true statement of my ofikil action -in the preinises, which will put the individ- ual, misnaming himself "Veritas," in, the sunlight, so that the citizens of this county may examine for them- selves, the question and pass judge- ment on the veracity of."Veritas." On the 23d of April, a telegram from Sheriff Cone of Nassau county,' was received, which read as follows "Arrest Miss Jennie S. Moorin-ey. Capias under way by mail. CONE, Sheriff." Absent from Bronson myef, this' dispatch was taken and showed to Miss Mooney by Mr, B. B. Barco the Deputy Sheriff, who then informed her that he wouldn't take her to Fern2 andina unless the warrant came to hand; the warrant arrived that night by mail, and having arrived in town. - after train time, I proceeded to the resi- dence of Miss Mooney. where I found ' AMr'. Barco, and in his presence sla d. Miss Mooney the warrant, which we. both _read together in the presence of Mr. Barco, I then' sent: her to Fern- andina in charge of the Deputy Sher- iff. In this case It have only done my duty, and only regret that I am com- pelled in my official capacity, to take notice of an anonymous slander which, as an individuals would"scorn to notice. j .. ; , h 11 ",fou d Accompanying this will be found' the affidavit of Mr. B. J Editors T!Ms Who is your Cedar Key corrcspon- dlent ? Tell us, do, and set the pub- lic mind at rest. Is his name legioni, or his alias's ? Inform us I beseech you, for there is no telling when his next spasmodic reportorial fit, will seize upon him, .and When it does there will be a Vesuvian eruption of personalities and sarcasms in your widely read columns. It has been said "Oh that mine enemy would write a book :" but faith the gratification would be slight,: did he shield himself behind such :z o de plumes as '"Don Padro," First Reg- ular, &c. Our only chance against such ene- mies, is exemplified in the t-cti-r pur- sued by an old -coon, when lrieset by a number of cur dogs. He throws himself on his back, spins round like a tcp, and snaps and scratches at ev- ery thing in reach. They do these things (newspaper correspondents,) better in -- Bronson, and I certainly admire the Bronsonian style of calling each oth- er pet names, over their own patro- nymics; for then, unlike the Irish- man's festive flea, you can ptft your finger on hitm and he's there. Well Mr. Editor, if I am to write you a letter, don't you think I had better begin ? The next thing to con- sider, is how to begin. Perhaps, as a matter of general in- terest, I should allude to the inauger- ation on the*lst inst., of a rigorous quarantine against all infected, or presumably infected ports. Every vessel entering fhis harbor, from no matter where iMust dhahof, or wait, at prescribed places until she has been thoroughly inspected by the Port Phy- sician, Dr. R. Y. H. Thomas, who is fully empov'ered to make such dispo- sition of her movemen.its as will insure against e spra1T- ofdliseas. 'The, enforceen:-tt of quarantine regulations almost invariably occasions more or l'.s complaint, and contention on the pait of ship w.ries, more especially the owners of steamn vessels. There is no reason why this should be so on the contrary, a cordial spirit of 6- operjiation on their part, would tend to lessen their liability to detention. Again, some claim that they could safely, and should be allowed a latf- tude under the laws of the quarantine, that would greatly facilitate their ves- -' sells : perhaps they do not reflect, that the regulations were and are for all alike, and that to deviate would be to establish a dangerous precedent. Your correspondent feels assured, that no effort will be spared to protect the health of the port throughout the sum- mner, and that all work harioniot-sly for that end. ...Our little city is marching steadily n war'c-J an,.J road of improve- ment. New builditlgS-sp every hand, testify to our prosperity.- foxyete, though much laughed at, when first in'- troduced, is no longer an experiment,' but an assured success. It makes a handsome, and apparently an ever- lasting structure. 'Let file concrete go oh. We were sadly disappointed at the failure to0 establish the mail route to Havana, and still cling to the hope that-it may be worked up. The weather fbt a week past has been unusually warm and dry. The supply of ice gave 8ut last week, our tempers got out of even tempera- ture, and the fighting season seemed to open in good earnest. Several ren- contres occurred ; in one, Dave Moore carved freely into the anatomy of Pat- rick Walsh, giving him seven severe, ugly gashes, each one narrowly esca- ping being fatal. Moore escaped to "Fish Bone." Another affray had for its actors, a man of Law and rev- erent years, and a disciple of Escula- pius, also past the meridian of life. The Law'd had no mercy on the Doc- tor, and had to be pulled off. I am sorryto chronicle the fact that Dr. Geo. 'A..Penny has lost the use of his left hand, from the wrist, supposed to be the result of a Federal bullet, that he has carried beneath his shoulder for years. Otherwise his health is good. We do not refuse to receive or listen to the ad- vice of good men, but' the character of all men as he, (the temperance man) who we. hear delivered an ad- dress in your town' also, should re- ceive the cold shoulder of every one with whom he meets. So far as his' lecture is concerned, it was indeed . a poor thing, and the character of the man was so: prominent that he even tried to escape without paying foir his supper arid lodging-tried to im- pose his expenses off.on our much be- loved Pastor, Mr. Partridge, who wa' insulted by him before he could.get rid of hinm. The killing was done about 5 miles from Gainesville on public road between three and:' four o'clock in the afternoon, under the following circumstances : There had been i f family feud between the deceased and Holder, relative to the distribu- "lion of some property in which the wife of Holder was interested, and for which he brought fuirllrghinst deceased the daNv of the difficulty. Both ofthem were in Gainesville on that day. Mr. -Kite in company with his brother, John Kite, and Mr. Wiley Moorhee, started home between 2 and 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and were overtaken by Holder a short distance floin the scene of the killing. Holder then- approached deceased, cursed him, and expressed a determination to settle their dispute at once. Mr. Kite, according to the testimony of his brother, John Kite, endeavored to avoid a difficulty with Holder, and was in the act of turning' his horse off from his assailant when Holder fired upon him with a pistol, The ball penetrated the head of Kite about a quarter of an inch above the left eye, and produced death in a few mo- ments. The partic; present at once notified Judge Gardner, Ex-officio Coroner, who sum- mnoned a jury, and inquest was had of the body, with a verdict to the effect that "the said deceased came to his death by pis- tol shot, from the hands of Thomas. B. Hol- der, and that the said Thomas B. Holder, fe- loniously, wilfully, and of malice -afore-' thought, did then and there kill and murder the said David Kite." After .the rendition of the verdict of the jury, Judge Grdner is- sued a warrant for the arrest of Holdecr, and officers went in search of him. At this writ- ing nothing has been heard of Holder. Gr. We have observed, that the principal and his assistants, teach the principles of each study, and lay the foundation in the pupils mind, for an easy and natural progress to a higher branch. In other words, the children are .taught to think,, and not merely to acquire knowledge, without the power or discrimina- tion to use it.
