1970 CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT

T. W. Casselman 1/

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Everglades Exper-
iment Station during the calendar year 1970. Daily temperatures and rainfall
observations are tabulated on pages 2 through 7. Cumulative rainfall data com-
paring 1970 to the 47-year average are on page 8. Monthly evaporation and
relative humidity data are tabulated on page 9. A 47-year summary (1924-1970)
appears on page 10.

All observations are made at 8 a.m. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
period. For example, on January 15 at 8 a.m. maximum and minimum temperatures
of 77 F and 61 F, respectively, and a'rainfall of 0.77 inches were recorded.
This means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hpur
period from 8 a.m. Januray 14 to 8 a.m. January 15. The rain fell at some time
during this same period.

Rainfall. Total rainfall for 1970 was 70.95 inches as compared to the
47-year average of 58.14 inches. March was the "wettest" month with 15.01
inches, a record rainfall at this Station for this month. April was the
"driest" with only 0.11 inches recorded. April, June, Setpember, October,
November and December had rainfalls below normal.

Relative Humidity. Mean maximum relative humidity by months varied
between 100% and 96%; mean minimum between 62% and 49%.

Temperature. Temperatures of 400F or lower were recorded on January 8,
9, 10, 11 and 23; February 4, 11, and 27; March 15; November 17 and 25 and;
December 27, 28 and 29. Average spring and summer monthly temperatures were
about normal to slightly higher than the 47-year average. January and February
averaged 40F cooler and April 30F warmer than normal. One freeze occurred
during January. Temperatures were below 32F for two hours on the morning
of the 10th and again from 9 p.m. of the 10th to 8 a.m. of the llth.

Hurricanes. Hurricanes did not affect this area this year.
