FFP 5R 1,
1968 CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT
1/
T. W. Casselman -

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Everglades Experi-
ment Station during the calendar year 1968. Daily temperatures and rainfall
observations are tabulated on pages 2 through 7. Cumulative rainfall data com-
paring 1968 to the 45-year average are on page 8. Monthly evaporation and rela-
tive humidity data are tabulated on page 9. A 45-year summary (1924-1968)
appears on page 10.

All observations are made at 8 a.m. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
period. For example, on February 19 at 8 a.m. maximum and minimum temperatures
of 770F and 580F, respectively, and a rainfall of 1.23 inches were recorded.
This means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hour
period from 8 a.m. February 18 to 8 a.m. February 19. Similarly, the rain fell
some time during the same time period.

Rainfall. Total rainfall for 1968 was 72.84 inches as compared to the 45-
year average of 57.47 inches. This was considered a "wet" year especially during
the spring and summer. About 87% of the yearly total or 64.02 inches was recorded
during the months of May through October. February was "wetter" than usual and
December was the "driest" month with only 0.05 inches recorded.

Relative Humidity. Mean maximum relative humidity by months varied between
100% and 96%; mean minimum between 68% and 47%.

Temperatures. Temperatures of 400F or lower were recorded on January 17,
26; February 9, 10, 14, 21, 28; March 2, 24; November 13, 14, 20; and December
5, 6, 16, 17, 25, 26. A killing freeze occurred on the morning of December 16
when 270F was recorded. Average monthly temperatures for 1968 were somewhat
lower than the 45-year average except for April and May which averaged 3 and 1
degrees higher respectively, than the 45-year average.

Hurricanes. -
Abby--Hurricane Abby moved slowly across Florida above Lake Okeechobee
June 5. Highest sustained winds at EES measured about 32 mph. These winds from
the west occurred on the afternoon of the 5th after Abby had crossed the state
and was stalled off the East Coast near Vero Beach. Total rainfall associated
with Abby was 3.82 inches. Lowest barometric pressure was 29.50 in. Hg at
6 p.m. on June 4.

Gladys--On October 17 Gladys eased up the West Coast about 100 miles off-
shore traveling in a NN Westerly direction. This was a storm of a fairly large
scope and the Belle Glade area experienced some winds and rains in squalls.
Total rainfall measured at EES associated with Gladys measured 3.83 inches and
fell on the 16, 17 and 18. Highest sustained wind speeds recorded were about
29 mph when measured and calculated over a 15 min. interval. Lowest barometric
pressure recorded was 29.75 in. Hg and occurred at 5 p.m. on October 17.
