1966 CLI>1ATCLCGICAL REPORT
1/
T. -'. Casselman-

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Everglades Experi-
ment Station during the calendar year 1966. Daily temperatures and rainfall
observations are tabulated on pages 2 through 7. Cumulative rainfall data
comparing 1965 to the 43-year average are on page 8. monthlyy evaporation and
relative humidity data are tabulated on pate 9. A 43-year summary (1924-1966)
appears on page 10.

All observations are made at 8 a.m. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
period. For example, on January 30 at 8 a.m. maximum and minimum temDeratures
of 740 F and 440 F, respectively, and a rainfall of 1.54 inches were recorded.
This means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hour
period from 8 a.m. January 29 to 8 a.m. January 30. Similarly, the rain fell
sometime during the same time period.

Rainfall. Total rainfall for 1966 was 54.27 inches as compared to the
43-year average of 57.66 inches. All months except January, February and June
were deficient in rainfall as compared to the average. June was the wettest
month with 17.21 inches as compared to the average 9.39. January was "wetter"
than usual. Larch and 1:ovember were "drier" than usual with less than 1 inch
recorded.

Relative Humidity. I'ean maximum relative humidity by months varied bet-
ween 100% and 98%; mean minimum between 64% and 52%.

Temperatures. Temperatures of 400 F or lower were recorded on January
24, 28, 29, 31; February 1, 5, 6; I.arch 7, 8; Lovember 4, 29, 30; and December
1, 2, 15, 20, 25, 26. A heavy freeze occurred on the morning of January 31
with a minimum of 260 F recorded. Temperatures were below 320 F for about 9-1/2
hours. Average monthly temperatures did not vary much from the 43-year average.
However, January and November averaged 20 F less, December 30 F less, and July
20 F more than the average.

Hurricanes. Hurricane Alma passed over the Gulf near Ft. iyers between
6 and 9 p.m. on June 8. iLaximum sustained winds recorded at the Everglades
Experiment Station when measured over a 5-minute interval were about 36 mph.
Lowest barometric pressure recorded was 29.74 in. Hg (inches mercury). rainfall
associated with Alma measured 2.73 inches.

Hurricane Inez hung off the eastern coast of Florida during October 4 and
5 and then turned south and west and entered the Gulf. 1Maximum sustained winds
recorded at the Everglades Experiment Station when measured over a 15-minute
interval were about 26 mph. Lowest barometric pressure recorded was 29.66 in.
Hg. Rainfall associated with Inez measured 0.40 inches. Damage in the Belle
Glade area due to these two storms was nil.
