Everglades Station Himeo Report EES66-7 January 1966

1965 Climatological Report

T. U. Casselman./

SUNI'ARY

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Everglades Experi-
ment Station during the calendar year 1965. Daily temperature and rainfall ob-
servations are tabulated on pages 2 through 7. Cumulative rainfall data comparing
1965 to the 42-year average is on page 8. Monthly evaporation and relative humid-
ity data are tabulated on page 9. A 42-year summary (1924-1965) appears on page
10.

All observations are made at 8 A.V. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
pe~iod. For example, on January 31 at 8 A.E. maximum and minimum temperatures of
810F. and 440F., respectively, and a rainfall of 0.19 inches were recorded. This
means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hour period
from 8 A.1:. January 30 to 8 A.M. January 31. Similarly, the rain fell sometime
during the same time period.

Rainfall:

Total rainfall for 1965 was 55.56 inches as compared to the 42-year average
of 57.73 inches. All months except February, June, September and October were de-
ficient as compared to the average. June and October were the wettest months as
judged by the rainfall in excess of the average.

Relative Humidity:

Mean maximum relative humidity by months varied between 100% and 94%; mean
minimum between 68% and 42%.

Temperatures:

Temperatures of 400F. or lower were recorded on January 18, 19, 20 and 30;
February 1, 20, 27 and 28; larch 9 and December 21. A heavy freeze occurred on
the morning of January 18 and a minimum of 250F. was recorded. The temperature
remained below freezing (320F) more than 8 hours. On the morning of January 19
a low of 330F. was recorded. Monthly average temperatures for the year did not
vary appreciably from the 42-year average. However, February, I'arch and April
averaged a little more than 20F. warmer as compared to the 42-year average.

Hurricanes:

Hurricane Betsy crossed the southern tip of the Florida mainland between 6
and 8 A.M., September 8. The Everglades Station was not affected appreciably by
this storm. Maximum sustained wind velocity recorded was about 39 mph (miles per
hour) in the early morning hours of September 8. A squall associated with Betsy
at about 2:10 P.H. September 7 had winds of about 42 mph when measured over a 10-
minute interval. Rainfall measured at the Station and associated with Betsy was
about 2.10 inches. Lowest barometric pressure recorded was 29.48 inches Hg at
about 5 A.?. September 8.
