CLIMATOLCGICAL REPORT
T. W. Casselman /

SUMMARY

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Everglades Experi-
ment Station during the calendar year 1964. Daily temperature and rainfall
observations are tabulated on pages 2-through 7. Cumulative rainfall data
comparing 1964 to the 41 year average is on page 8. Page 9 is a graphic repre-
sentation of 1964 monthly temperatures and rainfall as compared to the average.
Monthly evaporation and relative humidity data are tabulated on page 10. A 41-
year summary (1924-1964) appears on page 11.

Rainfall:
Total rainfall for 1964 was 45.13 inches, 12.68 inches below the annual
average of 57.81 inches. All months except Jan., Feb., Oct. and Dec. were
deficient in rainfall as compared to 41-year monthly averages. October was the
wettest month with 9.62 inches recorded. Of this amount 5.09 inches was re-
corded on the 15th due to Hurricane Isbel. This reading was also a record 24
hour amount for the month of October for this Station.

Relative Humidity:
Mean maximum relative humidity by months varied between 100% and 99%; mean
minimum between 535 and 64%. -Overall average for the year was 7%.

Temperature:
Temperatures of 400F. or below occurred on Jan. 3, 14, 15 and 19 and Feb.
9, 12, 21, 24 and 25. Lows of 300F. and 310F. were recorded on Jan. 15 and
Feb. 24, respectively. Heavy frosts were observed on these mornings. The
Feb. average temperature was about 3.50F. lower than the 41-year average. The
Dec. average temperature was about 3 F. higher than the 41-year average.

Hurricanes:
Two hurricanes passed near the Station during 1964. The center of Hurri-
cane Cleo passed an estimated 30 miles east of the station about 10 a.m. August
27th. Maximum sustained wind velocity recorded at the Station was about 52 mph
(miles per hour). Rainfall at the Station associated with Cleo measured less
than 2 inches. Lowest pressure recorded during Cleo was 29.20 inches Hg.

At about 7:30 p.m. October 14, the center of Hurricane Isbel was estimated
to pass several miles south of Belle Glade. Maximum sustained wind velocity
recorded at the Station was about 67 mph. Rainfall associated with Cleo mea-
sured 5.09 inches. Lowest pressure recorded during passage of the storm was
28.97 inches Hg.
