Climatological Report, 1962

Edward King, Jr.

SUMMARY

The report contained in the following 9 pages is a summary of the weather
data collected at the Everglades Station for the calender year 1962. Daily
temperatures and rainfall records are listed for each month on pages 2-7.
Evaporation and relative humidity are tabulated on page 8. A thirty-nine year
summary (1924-1962), is listed on page 9. A graphic illustration of temper-
atures and rainfall for 1962 in comparison with the average is shown on page 10.

Rainfall: Total rainfall for the year was 61.29 inches. This was 2.96
inches above the 39 year average. 6 months had above average rainfall, they
were March, April and June through September. September was the wettest month
of the year with 12.15 inches, this was 2.99 inches above the September average
o-f 9:16 inches and was the greatest excess during the year. No exceptionally
big 24 hour rains were recorded during the year, and in spite of the yearly
rainfall being above normal no severe flooding occurred in the cultivated area,
this was at least partly due to the fact that the rains were fairly well distri-
buted through the wettest months. The two greatest 24 hour rains recorded were
3.37 inches on July 3rd and 3.20 inches on September 21.

Relative Humidity: Mean maximum relative humidity varied from 100% to 97%
during the entire year. Mean minimum relative humidity varied from 61% to 45%
and the average for the year was 76%.

Temperature: Minimum temperatures of below 400F. occurred on four nights
during January, one of which, January 13 was below freezing with a temperature
of 30 F. During February there were no temperatures below 400F. Three nights
during March and one night in November had below 400F. temperatures recorded.
During December some exceptionally cold weather was experienced during a pro-
longed cold spell. On eight nights temperatures lower than 400F. were recorded;
they were December 8th and 10th through 16th with temperatures of 370, 390, 280,
350, 310, 300, 310 and 330F. respectively.

On December 11 the temperature was below freezing for about 6 hours. On
the 13th, 14th and 15th temperatures below freezing were also recorded. The
mean minimum temperature for December was 470F., this is about 60 lower than
the overall average minimum for December.
