CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT, 1961
Edward King, Jr.

SUMMARY

The report contained in the following 10 pages is a summary of the weather
data collected at the Everglades Station for the calendar year 1961. Daily
temperatures and rainfall records are listed for each month on pages 2 7.
Evaporation and relative humidity are tabulated on page 8. A thirty-seven
year summary (1924-1961 inclusive) of weather data, including extremes, is
listed on page 9. A graphic illustration of temperatures and rainfall for
1961 in comparison with the average is shown on page 10.

Rainfall Total rainfall for the year was 40.85 inches. This was 17.42
inches below the 37-year average. Only two months, January and May, had
above average rainfall. May was the wettest month of the year with 8.68
inches of rain recorded. At the end of May the total for the year was 0.71
inches above the average total. The months of June through December were all
deficient in rainfall. At the end of December the deficiency was 17.42 inches
below the average annual total. This amounted to 17.42 plus 0.71 inches or
18.13 inches short in 7 months. The greatest 24-hour rains recorded were 2.64
inches on August 15 and 2.52 inches on May 27.

Relative Humidity: Mean maximum relative humidity varied from 97% to
99% during the entire year. Mean minimum relative humidity varied from 48%
to 58%. The average humidity for the year was 76%.

Temperature: Minimum temperature of below 400 F. occurred on four nights
during January, one of which, January 22, was below freezing with 310 F. There
were two nights in Febru&ry and one night in March with temperatures below
400 F. but during these two months no freezing temperatures occurred. The
lowest temperature recorded in November was 460 F. Temperatures below 400 F.
occurred five times during December. Only once, December 30, was the tempera-
ture below freezing with 270 F. recorded. This was the lowest temperature
recorded for the year.
