Everglades Station Mimeo Report 58-9

CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT, 1957

D. S. Harrison and E. King, Jr.*

Summary

The report contained in the following nine pages is a summary of
weather data collected at the Everglades Station for the calendar year
1957. Daily temperature and rainfall values are recorded for each month,
separately. Page nine lists the monthly temperature and rainfall records
as compared to the 33-year averages (1924-56). On page eight is listed
the 33-year summary --- temperature and rainfall extremes and averages
that have occurred during the period (1924-56), including 1957 data.

Rainfall: Total rainfall for the year 1957 amounted to 71.26 inches, or
14.00 inches above the 33-year average. Months in which rainfall was
considerably above the 33-year average were January, February, March, May,
August, September and December. The months of June, July and October were
below the normal. April and November were at or near the average. Highest
month was September with 10.22 inches. Lowest month was November with
1.75 inches. Greatest rainfall for any 24-hour period was 6.03 inches on
January 21. Second was 4.39 inches on December 23. Total rainfall for
January and December was 6.56 and 6.55 inches, respectively, almost five
inches above the 33-year average. For the second successive year, June
rainfall was three to four inches below normal.

Temperature: Only on one day was the temperature below 40 degrees during
January, February, March and April. This was a 370 F reading on January 1.
The only other lows occurred on December 5, 10, 12 and 13, with tempera-
tures of 39, 39, 31 and 27 F, respectively. The only damaging freeze
during the year occurred on December 12 and 13. Highest temperature re-
corded was 95 on July 2 and August 12.
