1984 Climatological Report

This report summarizes weather data for 1984 a he.Everglades i
Research and Education Center, Belle Glade, Palm Beach County,
Florida; Lat. 260 40'; Long. 800.38'; R-37-E T-44-S; Elevation 11.5
ft. m.s.l.

Temperature: There were no freezing temperatures in 1984.
The coldest days were January 5 and March 1 with 350
for a low. .

Rainfall: Total for 1984 was 43.71, a deficit of 13.20 below
the 59 year average. There was below average rainfall
in eight months.

Solar Radiation: Solar radiation averaged 410 Ly per day,
just 6 Ly above the 13 year average.'.Radiation was
above average in eight months.

Solar Thermal Units: These units are based on a minimum
growing temperature of 600F. The formula is ...

S.T.U. = (solar radiation)(mean daily temp.-60oF)
Solar radiation is expressed in langleys.

For 1984 eight months had solar thermal units below the 13 year
average. Also the total for the year::was below the 13 year average.

All observations, except solar radiation which is recorded from a s
recorder strip chart, are made at 8 AM each morning and cover the previous
24 hour period (16 hours bf the previous day and 8 hours of the current
day). However, to assist local agricultural interests in comparing this
weather data are presented in this report on a Calendar Day basis. An ex-
planation of the various columns follows:

Air Temperature'-- Recorded in standard shelters at 3 inches and 5 feet
above ground.
Ground minimum A.M., recorded only during winter months.
Minimum A.M., usually occurs in the early morning hours.
Maximum P.M., usually occurs in the afternoon.
Mean Average of Min. & Max., approximates average for the day.

Solar Radiation -- Sunshine energy reported as langleys (gram calories
per cm2). Measured by a solar pyranometer and calculated from a
recorder strip chart.

Rainfall -- Inches of rainfall measured at 8 AM is credited to the pre-
vious day even though some may have fallen after midnight.











Evaporation -- Loss of water from a standard evaporation pan.
Measurements at 8 AM is credited to previous day since most
evaporation occurs during sunshine hours when temperature is
high and humidity is low.

Wind -- Recorded.on a strip chart. Count at 8 AM is credited to pre-
vious day. At 2 ft. miles of travel at 6.to 8 inches above the
.evaporation pan. At 20 ft. miles of travel and direction of
travel at top of 20 foot tower.

Soil Temperature -- AM minimum and PM maximum occurring 4 inches below
the surface of bare soil.

Relative Humidity -- Hours over 90% continuous, ending on calendar day.
Usually starts in lat PM of previous day.
Minimum % Usually occurs in afternoon when temperature and radia-
tion are highest.

Wetness -- Continuous hours, ending during calendar day, that moisture
from rain or dew stays on foliage. May start in late PM of pre-
vious day.
