1980 CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT

Temperature: Coldest temperature recorded wail Aiph. .Temperatures in
the 30's occurred 3 days in January, 6 in February. c 0fidOi December;
and in the 40's 5 days in January, 11 in February, 1 in larch, 2 Trtowember and 8
in December. Average temperatures for February and December were 2.8 and 1.70 below
the long-term 55 year minimum averages and 4.5 and 3.50 below the long-term maximum
averages. flinimum averages for the other ten months ranged from normal for September
to 4.5 above normal for March. In addition to February and December, maximum aver-
ages were below normal for January, April, flay, and November and were above normal
for March and June through October (see page 18). These temperatures are recorded
in a standard Weather Bureau Instrument Shelter at 5 feet above ground. Lower
temperatures will usually occur at ground level and in the so-called backlands,
especially on clear nights with no wind.
Frost: There was light frost on January 2, 3 and 25, February 5 and 29, and a
relatively heavy frost on larch 3.
Rainfall: Total for 1980 was 46.17 inches, a deficit of 10.83 inches below the
55 year average. Excess rain occurred in January, April, May and November. Septem-
ber was the wettest month with 7.54 inches, a deficit of 1.14. The other eight
months had deficit rainfall with December being the dryest with 0.73 inches, a
deficit Of 0.97. June, normally the wettest month, had only 1.26 inches, a deficit
of 7.80 (see page 17).

All observations, except solar radiation, which is calculated from a recorder
strip chart weekly, are made at 8 a.m. each morning and cover the previous 24 hour
period (16 hours of the previous day and 8 hours of the current day). Therefore,
most of the data posted in the Weather Observor's Record Book is for the day after
it actually occurred.
To assist local agricultural interests in comparing this weather data to their
observations of plant growth and product quality, the daily data is presented in

this report on a Calendar Day basis. An explanation of the various columns follows:
Air Temperature -- Recorded in a standard shelter at 5 feet above ground.
Minimum a.m., usually occurs in the early morning hours.

Maximum p.m., usually occurs in the afternoon.

Mean Average of above, approximates the average temperature for the day.
Solar Radiation -- Sunshine energy reported as langleys (gram calories per cm2).
measured by a solar pyranometer and calculated from a recorder strip chart
every Friday morning.

Rainfall -- Inches of rainfall measured at 8 a.m. is credited to the previous day
even though some may have fallen after midnight.
Evaporation -- Loss of water from a standard evaporation pan. Measurement at 8 a.m.
is credited to previous day since most evaporation occurs during sunshine hours
and when temperature is high and humidity is low.
Wind --
0 2 ft. Miles of travel at 6 to 8 inches above the evaporation pan. Count at
8 a.m. credited to previous day since wind affects evaporation and velocity is
usually low during early morning hours.
@ 20 ft. ililes of travel at approximately 10 feet above the roof of the
weather house is recorded, along with direction, on a strip chart. Count at
8 a.m. is credited to previous day to compare with wind at 2 ft.

Soil Temperature -- a.m. minimum and p.m. maximum occurring 4 inches below the sur-
face of bare soil.
Relative Humidity --
Hours over 90% Continuous hours over 90%, ending on calendar day. Usually
starts in late p.m. of previous day.
Minimum % Usually occurs in afternoon when temperature and radiation are
highest.
Wetness -- Continuous hours, ending during calendar day; that moisture from rain or
dew stays on foliage. May start in late p.m. of previous day.

previous climatological reports have been up-dated and included in this report.
