This report summarizes the weather data collected at the Agricultural Researcn
and Education Center at Belle Glade during the calendar year 1978. A brief summary
follows:

Temperature: Thirty-two degrees or lower was recorded on January 16, February
7 and 23. These lows were preceded by 300 on the 28 th of December, 1977. Tempera-
tures from 33 to 400 were recorded on January 10, 11, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31; February
11 and 12; and on the preceding December 23, 27 and 29 (1977). These temperatures
are recorded in a standard Heather Bureau instrument shelter at 5 feet above ground.
Somewhat lower temperatures will occur at ground level and in the so-called back-
lands. Average temperatures for January, February, March and April were well below
the long term averages for these months. November and December of this year were
well above normal with the lowest temperature for these months being only 510 on
November 5 and December 19.
Frost: Vegetable crops, sugarcane and pastures were damaged by frost last win-
ter. See discussion under temperatures above.

Rainfall: Total for 1973 was 61.54 inches (156.3 cm), 4.58 above normal. Six
months had deficit rainfall February, March, April, June, September and October.
The dryest month was February with 1.11 inches (2.8 cm). August was the wettest
month with 12.37 inches (31.4 cm), followed by May with 11.42 (29.0 cm), which is a
new record high for this month, the highest previous lay being 9.61 inches in 1958.
Relative Humidity: The hygrothermograph was checked and recalibrated during
the winter and early spring and the monthly averages are given in this report.
Wind: Velocities of more than 25 miles per hour occurred only a few times in
1978. The area was not affected in any way by hurricanes.
Solar radiation: Incoming sunlight energy was below the average for the 8
years that these records have been obtained at this station. January, February,
Narch, Hay, June, October and December were below both the 8-year average and 1977
with February, larch and October setting record lows for the past 8 years.

All observations, except solar radiation, are made at 8 a.m. each morning and
cover the previous 24 hour period (16 hours of the previous day and 8 hours of the
current day). Since these observations are recorded in the Heather Observer's
Record Book on the day that they are observed, most of the data posted on the perma-
nent weather record forms are for the day after they actually occurred. This is of
no practical significance for Heather Bureau statistics, long term averages, weather
trends, etc., Solar radiation is calculated from recorder strip charts at bi-monthl,
intervals.
In previous Experiment Station Climatological Reports only the temperature and
rainfall data have been given on a daily basis, and these have been for the standard
8 a.m. to 8 a.m. period.
However, it is felt that local agricultural interests should have available a

more complete report of daily weather data, and that this should be on a calendar day
basis. This is essential if comparison of weather data is to be made with day to day
observations of plant growth and with daily solar radiation.
Therefore, in the 1978 Weather Report, daily data on air temperature, solar
radiation, rainfall, evaporation, wind, soil temperature, relative humidity and
wetness, will all be given on a calendar day basis. An explanation of the various
columns follows:

Air Temperature --
Minimum a.m., usually occurs in the early morning hours.
Maximum p.m., usually occurs in the afternoon.

'?ean Average of above, approximates the average temperature for the day.

Solar Radiation -- Sunshine energy reported as langleys (gram calories per cm2).
Measured by a solar pyranometer and calculated from a recorder strip chart every
one-half month.
Rainfall -- Inches of rainfall measured at 3 a.m. is credited to the previous day
even though some may have fallen after midnight.
Evaporation -- Loss of water from a standard evaporation pan. Measurement at 8 a.m.
is credited to previous day since most evaporation occurs during sunshine hours
and when temperature is high and humidity is low.
Hind --
0 2 ft. Miles of travel at G to I inches above the evaporation pan. Count at
8 a.m. credited to previous day since wind affects evaporation and velocity is
usually low during early morning hours.
0 20 ft. Miles of travel at approximately 10 feet above the roof of the
.weather house is recorded, along with direction, on a strip chart. Count at
8 a.m. is credited to previous day to compare with wind at 2 ft.
Soil Temperature -- a.m. minimum and p.m. maximum occurring 4 inches below the sur-
face of bare soil.
Relative Humidity --
Hours over 90% Continuous hours over 90%, ending on calendar day. Usually
starts in late p.m. of previous day.
Minimum % Usually occurs in afternoon when temperature and radiation are
highest.
Wetness Continuous hours, ending during calendar day; that moisture from rain or
dew stays on foliage, May start in late p.m. of previous day.
