S1977 CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT
R. J. Allen, Jr.!

SThisireport summarizes the, weather data collected on the Agricultural Research
and education: Centei at; ielle Gl ae; during thh Caletd!r:-y ar p977. All observations
wer ma~ael at 8 ai.m. each day an hoboeer -fhe prviois 24 2 ogr-'period.

| Rain allt Total for 1977 was 46.54 inches or 118.22 cm compared to the 52-year
(Jauary 1925 through December 1976) average.of 57.15 inches or 145.14 cm. Seven
months ha4 deficit rainfall February, March, April, June, July, August, and October.
Mar h was! the dryest month with only 0,30 inch or 0.26,cm., September was the
wettest *with 11.22 inches or 28.5 cm.

S Relative Humidity: In checking all station weather instruments late in 1977 it
was foundithat the relative humidity element of the hygrothermograph had not been
properly serviced for several years. -Therefore relative humidity, records reported
for many of the past years are not reliable. Average maximums are estimated to have
been 10 to 15% too high and average minimums probably too low. At present and in the
future this instrument will be checked with a sling psychrometer at least monthly.
Since 1977 readings are not considered reliable they will not be included in this
report.

Temperature: Thirty-two degrees F or lower were recorded on December 28,
January 18, 19, 20, 21, and February 28. Snow flurries occurred on the morning of
January 19, followed by a hard freeze on the night of January 19-20. Temperatures
from 33 to 40 degrees F occurred on November 27, December 23, 27, and 29, January 22,
23, 26, and 30, and February 18, 19, 21, and 22.

Frost: There was considerable frost damage to vegetable crops this year. All
first year and early harvest stubble growth of sugarcane, except that immediately
adjacent to Lake Okeechobee, was killed to the ground on the night of January 19-20,
and most regrowth frozen again in late February. Mature cane was also killed but
cool ,weather following the frqeee slowed sppilage,sQ that harvest loss was minimun2/

'Hrricanes: This area wAs'not'affected byhurricanes this year.

Solar Radiation: Incoming solar energy was higher for this year than ,for the
previous four years, but not up to 1971 or 1972. February was the lowest for this
month in the past seven years that radiation records have been kept at this station.
October .set[ a record high.
