4 1973 CLIMATOLOGICAL REPORT
C. R. Wilcoxen and R. J. Allen, Jr.-

This report summarizes the weather data collected onthe Agricultural Research
-and Education Center at Belle Glade during'the calendar year 1973. Daily temper-
ature and rainfall observations are tabulated on'pages 2 through 7. Cumulative rain-
fall data comparing 1973 to the 50-year average are on page 8. Monthly evaporation
and relative humidity data are tabulated on page 9. A 50-year summary (1924-1973)
appears on page 11.

All observations are made at 8 a.m. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
period. For example, on January 23 at 8 a.m. maximum and minimum temperatures of
830F and 580F, respectively, and a rainfall of 0.60 inches were recorded. This
Means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hour period from
8 a.m. January 22 to 8 a.m. January 23. The rainfall likewise occurred at sometime
during this same period.

Rainfall: Total for 1973 was 51.20 inches as compared to the 50 year average
of 57.78 inches. All months except January, March, June and July showed deficit
rainfall compared to the 50 year average. July was the wettest month having 12.43
inches, an excess of 4.26 above average. November was the driest month with only'
0.01 inch recorded, a 50-year record low for the month. The year finished with a
deficit of 6.58 inches.

Relative Humidity: Monthly maximum averages varied between 100% and 97%;
minimum averages between 52% and 36%.

Temperature: Forty degrees F or lower were recorded on January 14, 30 and 31;
February 11, 12 and 17 and December 10, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22 and 23. The winter,
early spring and late fall months (except .February and December) had average temper-
atures 10 to 30F higher than the 50 year average. Summer months were about normal.

Frost: Scattered frost occurred on December 12, 18, and 22, destroying tender
plants in some areas.

Hurricanes: This area was not affected this year. However, Hurricane Alice
did threaten south Florida about mid .ul 1ii f approximately 300
miles offshore in the Gulf. This was a!~ ti~nf l associated with
the system measured about 5 inches ov r a 4 day period.
