Belle Glade AREC Research Report EV-1973-1 HUME LIBRARYnu ry, 1973.

1972 CLIMATOLOG CAL REPi 15 1973

T. I. Cassel
I.'A.S. Univ. of Florida

This report summarizes the weather data collected on the Agricultural Research
and Education Center at Belle Glade during the calendar year 1972. Daily temper-.
ature and rainfall observations are tabulated on pages 2 through 7. Cumulative
rainfall data comparing 1972 to the 49-year average are on page 8. Monthly evapora-
tion:and relative humidity data are tabulated on page 9. A 49-year summary (1924-
1972) appears on page 10.

'All observations are made at 8 a.m. each day and cover the previous 24-hour
period. For example, on January 23 at 8 a.m. maximum and minimum temperatures of
780F and 640F, respectively, and a rainfall of 0.95 inches were recorded. This
means that these temperatures were reached sometime during the 24-hour period from
8 a.m. January 22 to 8 a.m. January 23. The rainfall likewise occurred at some
timeduring this same period.

Rainfall. Total rainfall for 1972 was 51.99 inches as compared to the 49-year
average of 57.93 inches. All months except April, May, July and November showed
deficit rainfall amounts when compared to the 49-year average. April was the
wettest month having an excess of 4.56 inches. The year finished with a deficit
of 5.94 inches.

Relative Humidity. Mean maximum relative humidity by months varied between
100% and 97%; mean minimum between 57% and 42%.

Temperature. Temperatures of 400F or lower were recorded on February 21 and
December 28 and 29. The normally cooler late fall, winter, and early spring months
(except January) had average temperatures 10 to 3F higher than the 49-year average.
January was abnormally warm with an average of 700F as compared to the 49-year
average of 630F. Summer months were about normal.

Hurricanes'. Hurricanes did not affect this area this year. However, Agnes
did threaten' south Florida about mid June but finally passed approximately 300
miles offshore in the Gulf. .She.was a large storm and rainfall associated with
the system measured about 4 inches over a 5-day period.
