On behalf of the faculty and staff, I extend to each of you a most
cordial welcome to the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center at
Bradenton. This Center was initiated in 1925 as a one-man tomato
research operation in Palmetto and the first ornamental programs began
about 17 years later. This Center, with an affiliated Agricultural
Research Center in Dover, Florida, is a Research and Education unit of
the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
In Bradenton we have 13 scientists from various disciplines of training
who participate in ornamental plant research programs. Each scientist
also holds an affiliate appointment with his subject matter department at
the University of Florida. This combination of a broad base of research
disciplines, industry contacts, and an excellent faculty makes our
interdisciplinary cooperative team approach to research programs far more
productive than could otherwise be accomplished with limited investment
in independent programs.
An integral part of the overall mission of this Center deals directly
with the ornamental industries in Florida through research programs to
1) develop new or improve technology for more efficient production,
handling and utilization of ornamental crops; 2) improve quality of
products made available to the public through breeding and cultivar
evaluations; 3) develop technology and practices to reduce both energy
consumption and environmental pollution without sacrificing quality
during production and thereby enhance man's environment; 4) develop
biological and mechanical pest management concepts; 5) develop improved
technology on uses of air, water and land resources, and solar energy;
6) develop information for all Florida growers to compete effectively
with other geographic areas of the nation and world; 7) advance basic
knowledge of the various scientific disciplines represented by the
faculty; and 8) assist the cooperative extension service, departments in
the College of Agriculture and other Research Centers with extension,
educational training, and cooperative research programs for the benefit
of producers, consumers and students.
Information presented in this publication summarizes the active caladium
research projects underway this season. We sincerely appreciate your
interest and support of these research programs and continuously solicit
your suggestions for improvement and ideas of industry needs from our
research and extension programs.

I Evaluation of sources of nitrogen (urea versus 1:1 nitrate
to ammonium) and availability of nutrients (early in crop
cycle versus late in crop cycle) for production of caladium
II Development of a production equation for the response of
caladiums to fertilization rates, and correlation of tissue
analyses to corrective nutritional practices for optimum
growth and yield of tubers.

I Leaf Whiteness vs. Tuber Production F-4
Replicated trials with 25 selections which range in leaf
coloration from very green to very white. Trying to
establish correlation between chlorophyll content of
leaves (e.g. greenness) and production of tubers.
II Seedling Replicated Trials
Sixteen seedlings from the GCREC breeding program are
being compared to 5 commercial cultivars for color, leaf
number and tuber production.
III Observational Trials F5-6
Over 400 seedlings are being evaluated in small plots
(12 chip pieces) for leaf color, leaf number, plant
height and tuber production.
IV Candidum Type Selections F-6
Large plots of 48 selections similar to Candidum but
having whiter leaves and a shorter growth habit are
V Advanced Selections, Increase F-7
Seven advanced selections, 3 of which will be available
to growers in 1987, are being increased.
VI Caladium Seedlings in Pots Horticulture
Some of the more advanced selections are being
grown in the greenhouse to evaluate them under
forcing conditions and to compare them to commercial
VII Commercial Cultivars C-7
Observational plots of 80 commercial cultivars are
being maintained for use in the breeding program
and as a source of germplasm for growers.
