Introduction
We would like to welcome you to the Agricultural Research and Education Center at
Bradenton. The program today will begin with a discussion period where caladium
growers and research faculty will interact to determine research needs for the
maximum production and utilization of caladiums. We hope the comments will be
candid so that we can better serve the industry in the present and the future.
Following a lunch break we will tour some of the research areas to illustrate the
current programs with caladiums. The research studies and field numbers for the
tour are as follows:

1. Nematicides and tuber treatments (C-32)
2. Fertilizer levels for tuber production (C-32)
3. Commercial caladium cultivar trial (C-15)
4. Weed competition and control (E-15)
5. Caladium seedling replicated trial (E-1)
6. Caladium tuber-chip spacing study (E-2)
7. Advanced selections of caladiums (E-1)
8. Tissue cultured caladium cultivars (E-2)
9. Unselected caladium seedlings (E-2)
10. Method of caladium breeding (greenhouse)

Title: Caladium/Nutsedge Competition Experiment

Researchers: J. P. Gilreath and B. K. Harbaugh

Location: E-15, Rows 2-3, AREC-Bradenton

Purpose: Determine the competitive effects of purple nutsedge
development of caladiums and determine whether early
season or season-long control of nutsedge is needed.

on growth and
season, late

Method: Caladiums (cv. Candidum) were planted 6 inches apart in 2 rows 1 foot apart
on raised mulched beds on May 24, 1982 using 20 chips per treatment plot.
The growing area was chosen for its large population of purple nutsedge.
One-half of the plots were allowed to become weedy with nutsedge and the
other one-half were maintained weed-free. Weedy and weed-free status
varied with time. The actual treatments are listed below. Tubers are
to be dug in November, counted, graded and value determined.

Title: Caladium/Pigweed Competition Experiment

Researchers: J. P. Gilreath and B. K. Harbaugh

Location: E15, Rows 4-5, AREC-Bradenton

Purpose: Determine effects of different densities of pigweed plants for
varying durations early in the season on the growth and development
of 'Candidum' caladiums.
Method: Caladiums were planted 6 inches apart in 2 rows, 1 foot apart, on
raised mulched beds using 20 chips per treatment plot. Planting was
completed May 24, 1982. Pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus) seed were
pl:,te,.: in holes randomly punched in appropriate plots on May 25,
1982. Pigweed plants were allowed to grow for 1, 2, or 3 months
at densities (number of plants/plot) of 0 (weed free check), 2, 4,
6 and 8 plants per plot.

Tubers are to be dug in November, counted, graded and value determined.

Actual treatments are listed below:

Title: Caladium Herbicide Trial

Researchers: J. P. Gilreath and B. K. Harbaugh

Location: E-15, Rows 6-7, AREC-Bradenton

Purpose: To evaluate herbicides for use in caladiums produced on sand land.

Method: Various herbicides which showed promise in a field trial in 1981 were
applied to plots planted to 'Candidum' caladiums. Caladium chips were
planted 6 inches apart in 2 rows 1 foot apart on raised unmulched beds
on May 20, 1982, using 20 chips per treatment plot. Preplant incorpor-
ated (ppi) and preemergence surface applied (pre) herbicides were applied
May 20, 1982. Postemergence (post) applications were made June 9, 1982.
Additional applications of Fusilade (a post-emergence grass herbicide)
were made as needed to control grass weeds in all plots except the weedy
check on July 5, July 15, and September 1. Treatments are listed below.
Tubers will be dug in November, counted, graded and value determined.
