Hodges is co-operating with the United States Bureau of Fisheries in efforts to make a scientific study of the habits of the mullet, a fish e -on sidered one of the most valuable inhabiting Florida waters, from a money-making stand- point. The commissioner is now devoting his at- tention more specifically to ascertaining the ex- act spawning time of the mullet, ;in order that the closed season may be changed if necessary to give better protection to the maternal fish during that period. SSpecimens of roe have been taken as far south as Cape Sable, and no considerable dif- ference in advancement bf maturity of roe in one part of the state over the other has been observed so far. A large specimen jar An the shell fish commission exhibit in the capitol con- tains side by side two well-developed speci- ,mens of red roe, one taken from extreme northwest Florida, and the other from ex- treme south Florida. No perceptible differ- ence is shown in their maturity. The fat of the mullet first appears in the fish's head. Later it appears inside the body, and then from the body it goes to the roe. The red roe is carried by the female while the white is carried by the male fish. The red mullet roe is considered a delightful food, and has very ready sale, and great quan- tities are shipped annually from the state. . EVENTS OF THE WEEK IN THE ISLAND CITY j, DEVELOPMENT OF BACK COUNTRY IS CHIEF NEED OF STATE OF FLORIDA Perhaps the most essential point Sto be considered in establishing the Spermanency of what critics are Pleased to call the "Florida boom" is the development of the back coun- try. Fortunately Florida's well pro- vided for in this respect. We have the authority of Governor Martin himself to say that the agricultural d-vclopment of the state is yet only in its early stages, and when it reaches its full development, it will he capable of.supporting a popula- tion of 15,000,000 peoplje.. If that is true, andvwe see no reason to doubt it for the governor is noted for the conservation of his statements, and rarely makes an assertion that he cannot back up with the actual facts, there need be no nervous doubts as to the permanency of the so-called boom. It will last until the state is filled up with a contented .and pros- peious husbandry, getting a living by the cultivation of a fertile soil under an evershining sun. -No state in the Tnion offers such wonderful oppor- tunities to the careful anrdt-industrious farmer as does Florida. Whether his tastes run to stock farming, handling h.og- or cattle, or to truck farming, gr-owing vegetables in winter for northern markets, or to that ne plus ultra of all outdoor employment fruit growing, he will find conditions here that well night approach perfection. i. e stockman finds a long growing season, with an abundant supply of forage plants and valuable native grasses, upon which his stock is cer- tain to thrive. The genial climate flEes him from the necessity of pro- viding expensive shelter for his stock through the long months of winter. 1he trucker rejoices in a fertile soil, * easy to work but extraordinarily productive, with an easy anrd quick access to the largest market in the nation, at a time when the northern w-inter cuts off all competition. The f,,:it grower has a long list of fruits from which to make his selection. If the growing of citrus fruits does not appeal to him, he can turn his atten- tion -to bananas, avocadoes, or ber- ries which all thrive here and have prov(-ed themselves to be moneymak- eis. We have merely attempted to outline there branches of agriculture and horticulture which will be most likely to attract the attention of northern farmers. We have not int,.n-: tionally exaggerated or misstated the possibilities in any of the, lines. The northern farmer who decided to lo- cate here will find a salubrious and healthful all-the-year climate, schools, and churches such as he is accustom- ed to in the north and a genial, Triend ly arid companionable people. If he does not make a success here it must be his own fault. To those who have tired of fighting the long, bitter win- ters of the north with their ice and snow and other handicaps, we say "Come to Florida, where such things never happen, and where you will live longer and more pleasantly."-- Tampa Times. J. M. Land of Salem, Ala., is again visiting Cedar Key, this being his third visit to the Island City.
