Beabiodal Weed Control in Corn, Peanuts, Soybeans and Grain Sorghun 1961
West Florida Eperiment Station
Jay, Florida
Corm Stands of orabgrass, water grass and barnyard grass were uniformn Florida
purslev was the only weed common to the area. Cocklebur, morning glory end red
weed and night shade were present but were not uniformly distributed. No defi.
nite control for oooklebur was observed.

Injury to the stand of corn occurred and plants were retarded where Fensc,
Falone and Amiben were used. Retarded plants recovered later in the season*
Herbicides Tillam, Eptam, R 1856 and R 1870 were incorporated by disking two
wars. The soil type was Carnegie and four replicates of each treatment were
used, The corn variety was Dixie 18 and the stand was good,

Peanuts Peanuts were planted on Norfolk fine sandy loam which had a uniform
population of orabgrass, water grass and Florida puraley. Cocklebure, red weed
and pig weed were present, but the stands were irregular.

No damage to the stand was observed. Slight injury was caused by PIersge,
Sinoz PB, Falone and Amiben. Plants recovered later.

As shewn in the data, herbicides and especially combinations of herbioldes
applied at cracking time gave excellent weed control. A considerable amount
of burning occurred but all plants recovered, In most instances, weed control
persisted for the full season. Four plots of each treatment were used in
preemergence test and two each where herbicides were applied at cracking time.
The stand of peanuts, Dixie Runner, was good.

Soybeanst Grasses and weeds present were crab, water and barnyardi Florida
pursley, red weed (Melochia cochorofoliar L.), cocklebur, coffee weed, morning
glory and night shade. The populations of barnyard grass, cocklebur, coffee
weed, morning glory and night shade were irregular. The data indicate the
control of the more common species of weeds. The stand of ooklebur was not
thick but occurred in plots of all treatments and was not controlled by
ar~ chemical. Two pounds of Falone and 41 pounds of Premerge were most effective
but did not completely kill cockleburs.

A hard downpour ooourred immediately following application of the htbio&de
and may be responsible for lack of control and for toxicity of some of the
herbicides. Severe damage to the stand occurred from use of Falone (2 lbs,),
Sesone and Alanap-3. Randox T caused no damage to stand but was very toxic.
A slight dwarfing was observed on plots receiving Tillam (4 lbs.) and Vtao, but
plants recovered.

Grain Sorghum This test was located in the same area with the soybeans and
the grass and weed populations were approximately the same. No coekleburs were
observed on treatment receiving Falone (2 Ibs.). Very few were present where
Premerge, Sinox PE, Sinazine and Atrazine were used. Sight but negligible
damage to stand was caused by Premerge, Sinox PE, D 326, Diuron, Atrasine
Simasin, CIPC, Prometone, M 2025 and M 1693. Medium damage occurred from use
of Amiben, Randox, Vegadex, Diphenamid, W 1513, Eptam, Tillam and Alanap-3.
Falone almost completely destroyed the stand. Volunteer field peas occurring
on plots receiving D 326, Premsrge, Sinox PE, Randox, W 4513, Diumon and Atresial
showed no injury.
