Variety Trials of Upland Cotton

L. S. Dunavin and D. L. Wrights

Cotton variety trials have been grown at WFREC, Jay for the past 19 years to determine those
varieties best adapted to this area and to provide a basis for variety recommendations by the Extension
Service. Variety trial results for 1998 and averages over several years are included in this report. Also
included are results from the North Florida Research and Education Center at Quincy.
At Jay, 44 varieties were included in the variety test and 13 in the strains test. Procedures for each
trial were the same. They were located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult) and were
planted on 1 May 98. Fertilizer included 350 pounds per acre of 3-9-18 prior to planting and an
application of 200 pounds per acre of ammonium Nitrate on 15 June 98. An irrigation of 0.9 inches of
water was applied in mid-May. Other applications included Thimet at 8 oz, per 1000 ft. of row under
the seed, Prowl at 1.8 pints per acre, insecticides at recommended rates on 30 July, 19 August, and 24
August, and Pix at 2 oz. per acre on 22 July. The plants were defoliated on 6 October and harvested on
22 October 98. The summer was hot with periods of dry weather. Conversion factors from English to
metric units are given in Table 1, and climatological data are presented in Table 2. Yield data for the
variety test are given in Table 3 and for the strains test in Table 4. Multiple-year data are presented in
Table 5. Yields were very low in 1998, and a lot of this reduction was due to damage from Hurricane
Georges.
The trial at Quincy included 59 entries and was planted on 6 May 98. Fertilizer included 350 pounds
per acre of 5-10-15 applied on both sides of rows on 7 May 98 and 34-0-0 at 100 pounds per acre of
active ingredient applied on 26 June 98. The cotton was harvested with a spindle picker on 22 and 23
October 98. Yield data are presented in Table 6.
