JAY, WFREC Research Report WF98-3, February, 1998

VARIETY TRIALS OF UPLAND COTTON

Hugh A. Peacock*

We have grown a cotton variety trial at WFREC, Jay for the past 18 years to determine those
varieties best adapted to this area and to provide a basis for variety recommendations by the
Extension Service. Variety trial results for 1997 and averages over several years are included in
this report. Also included are results from variety trials grown in Santa Rosa and Okaloosa
counties and the NFREC, Quincy along with 4-location average yields by variety.

RESULTS

The WFREC cotton variety test is a continuing evaluation of available cotton varieties from
private companies and state agricultural experiment stations and is an endeavor to obtain an
unbiased estimate of the performance of varieties grown under Florida environmental conditions.
Breeding lines that are likely to be released are tested also as cotton strains. We try to test only
those varieties and strains that will be adapted to the North Florida-South Alabama-South Georgia
area. Cultural practices are those generally recommended by the University of Florida Extension
Service to the farmers of this area. Every effort is made to test the varieties and present the results
in an unbiased manner. An analysis of the yield data is made as appropriate and presented in the
Tables included in this report.

Thirty-nine varieties were tested in a single trial replicated four times in 1997 on a Red Bay sandy
loam to determine yield. All varieties were planted 08 May at the rate of 12 lb/acre acid delinted
seed. A preplant application of 600 lb/acre 3-9-18 with sulfur and minors was disked into the soil
along with Treflan and Vernam. Ammonium nitrate was applied as a top-dressing at 200 lb/acre.
Pix was applied twice and boron at 0.5 lb/acre once. Stand was thinned to 3-4 plants/foot of row
in rows 36" apart. No supplemental water was applied. Rainfall during the growing season was
4" less than the 49-year average; however, rainfall in May was 3" more than in 1996. Rainfall
data for WFREC, Jay are presented in Table 7. Yields were good for most varieties; an average
of 200 Ib lint/acre more than in 1996. Insect populations and kinds of insects were about the same
as in 1996 with no epidemic outbreak of beet armyworns. The overall mean of the variety test
grown at WFREC was 1288 lb lint/acre as shown in Table 1. Highest yield was from Stoneville
BXN-47 and Deltapine NuCOTN 35", Followed by Paymaster PM H1560.

Data on yields of entries in the Strains test grown at WFREC, Jay are shown in Table 2. Highest

yield was from a Georgia entry, GA-89-224 followed by HyPerformer HYX-3712 and Deltapine
NuCOTN 32B The overall mean of the test was 1472 Ib lint/acre.

BOLLGARD ENTRIES

Data on yield of Bollgard entries are presented in Table 3. Highest yielding entry in the test was
Deltapine DP-33B, followed by Deltapine DP-Acala 90B and Deltapine DP-50B. The overall mean
yield of the test was 1298 lb lint/acre. Deltapine DP-51 included in the test as a check variety
was the second highest in yield with 1437 lb/acre lint.

MULTIPLE-YEAR AVERAGE YIELDS

Data on yield at WFREC, lay in 1997 along with 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-year average yields are
shown in Table 4. The highest yielding variety of varieties grown 3 years was Deltapine NuCOTN
33B and Deltapine NuCOTN 35B, followed by Paymaster PM H1560; of varieties grown 6 years,
the highest yielding was Deltapine DP-5690 followed by Deltapine DP-5415, Deltapine DP-51,
and Stoneville LA-887.

STATEWIDE TESTS

Data on yield of cotton varieties grown at four locations in North Florida are presented in Table 5.
The average highest yielding variety grown at the four locations was Stoneville St-373 followed by
Sure Grow SG-501. The overall mean for the four tests was 1132 Iblacre lint.

Table 6 presents the yield data from the Micky Diamond farm along with fiber length, micronaire,
and strength.
