VARIETY TRIALS OF UPLAND COTTON

Hugh A. Peacockl/

We have grown a cotton variety trial at WFREC, Jay for the last 17 years to
determine those varieties best adapted to this area and to provide a basis for
variety recommendations by the Extension Service. Variety trial results for 1996
and averages over several years are included in this report. Also included are
results from variety trials grown in Santa Rosa, Alachua, and St. Johns counties;
WFREC, Jay; and NFREC, Quincy; Fairhope, Headland, Shorter, and Monroeville,
Alabama; and Tifton and Plains, Georgia. From comparison of these reports, one
should be able to determine the cotton variety best adapted to a general produc-
tion area.

EXPLANATION OF DATA

Harvest of Seed Cotton:
Tests at WFREC Jay, Santa Rosa, Fairhope, Headland, Shorter, Monroeville, Tifton,
and Plains were harvested by a mechanical spindle picker and weighed. Yield of
seed cotton was determined for each variety at each location. At other locations,
tests were hand-picked and weighed to determine yield of seed cotton.

Lint Percentages:
Seed cotton samples from each variety at Fairhope, Headland, Shorter, and Monroe-
ville, Alabama; Tifton and Plains, Georgia were ginned on a 10-saw gin and lint
percentage was calculated by dividing the weight of the lint by the weight of the
seed cotton sample and multiplying by 100.

Lint Yield:
Lint yield was determined by multiplying seed cotton yield by lint percentage for
that variety. Lint yield from Florida tests was determined by multiplying seed
cotton yield by 0.40, an average lint percentage figure for this area.

Fiber Properties:
Length. For all tests, this is the fiber length measured with the HVI instrument
and approximates classer's staple.

Strength. A measure of the fiber strength of a bundle of fiber measured with two
jaws holding the fiber bundle separated by 1/8-inch, expressed in grams force per
tex. Tex is a size measurement of the fiber bundle expressed as mass, in milli-
meters, of 1 meter of the fiber filaments. The data are given as the force, in
grams, needed to break this bundle. The higher the number the stronger the fiber.

Elongation (El), A measure of the percentage stretch before the fibers break.

Micronaire. This measures the fineness of the cotton fibers taken from the ginned
lint. The smaller the micronaire reading, the finer and/or more immature the
fibers. The desirable range of micronaire is 3.5 to 4.9.

1/Professor and Center Director, University of Florida, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, WFREC, Jay.
I -

Uniformity. A measure of the uniformity of the fiber length of the fiber samples.

Earliness. Where more than one harvest was made, earliness is reported as the
percentage of the total yield harvested at the first picking.

Fusarium.Wilt.
Reaction of varieties to Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum fusariumm wilt) was
evaluated at the Plant Breeding Unit, Tallassee. Selected varieties were grown
in a field with a high natural incidence of the fusarium wilt disease. In 1996,
root-knot nematode damage was unusually light on cotton roots of all varieties.
Cooler than normal temperatures in the early fall and early spring may have re-
duced root-knot nematode populations and there was little incidence of Fusarium
wilt. For this reason, the Fusarium wilt data is not reported.

RESULTS

WFREC, Jay:
The WFREC, Jay cotton variety test is a continuing evaluation of available cotton
varieties from private companies and state agricultural experiment stations.
Breeding lines that are likely to be released are also tested. We try to test
only those varieties and strains that will be adapted to the North Florida-South
Georgia-South Alabama area. Cultural practices are those generally recommended
by University of Florida to farmers. Every effort is made to test the varieties
and present the results in an unbiased manner. Appropriate analyses of the yield
data were made. The variability in the test was measured and is expressed as a
percentage of the test mean, that is, the coefficient of variation (CV). An
indication of the magnitude of difference between variety averages necessary to
be considered a real difference is given for each location and is designated as
the Least Significance Difference (LSD05).

Thirty-two cotton varieties were tested in a single trial replicated four times
in 1996 on a Red Bay sandy loam to determine yield. All varieties were planted
11 May at the rate of 15 lbs/A acid delinted seed. A preplant application of
500 lbs/A 3-9-18 with sulfur and minors was disked into the soil along with
Treflan and Vernam. Ammonium nitrate was applied as a top-dressing at 150 Ibs/A
on 12 June. Pix was applied once and boron at 0.5 Ib/A B once. Stand was thinned
to 3-4 plants/foot of row in rows 36" apart. No supplemental water was applied.
Plots were harvested 20 November. Yields were good for most varieties. The season
started off very dry with only 0.64 inches rainfall in May (Table 1) and only
about half the normal amount in June. Worms and aphids were about as usual except
there was no epidemic of beet armyworms as in 1995. Rainfall during the growing
season was 2 inches less than the 48-year average. The overall mean for the test
grown at WFREC was 1071 lbs lint/A. The data on yield and boll size from the test
are shown in Table 2. Highest yield was from Deltapine NuCOTN35B followed closely
by Deltapine NuCOTN33B, Paymaster H1560, and Paymaster H1215.

Data on yield at WFREC, Jay in 1996 along with 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-year average
yields are shown in Table 3. The highest yielding variety of varieties grown 3
years was HyPerformer HS-44 followed by Deltapine 5415, Deltapine 51, and Delta-
pine 50; of varieties grown 6 years, the highest yielding was Deltapine 5415
followed closely by Deltapine 51, Deltapine 5690, Deltapine 50, and HyPerformer

Production Costs:
The estimated costs of producing an acre of cotton in North Florida and break-
even prices are presented in Table 38.

Recommended Varieties:
Varieties recommended by the University of Florida, IFAS, Florida Extension
Service that should yield well under normal conditions are, in alphabetical
order, as follows:

Deltapine 50 HyPerformer HS-46
Deltapine 51 Stoneville KC-311
Deltapine DES119 Stoneville 453
Deltapine 5415 Stoneville 474
Deltapine 5690 Stoneville LA887
Deltapine Acala 90* Suregrow 125
*To get the best performance from Deltapine Acala 90, care must be
taken to prevent excessive growth. A common error is to over-fer-
tilize. On the heavier soils of Florida, N fertilization should
not exceed 50 Ibs/A unless you have a history of Deltapine Acala
90 on the soil. If too much N is applied, excessive plant growth
and poor boll retention will result. In addition, lower bolls
will be more susceptible to boll rotting organisms and hard lock.

TRANSGENICS FOR 1997

Bollgard Varieties;
Varieties having the Bt gene, which gives plant resistance to tobacco budworms,
pink bollworms and cotton bollworms, are as follows:

Deltapine NuCOTN33B
Deltapine NuCOTN35B

Paymaster PM1244BG

Roundup Ready Varieties:
Varieties having a gene which makes the cotton plants
herbicide are as follows:

Paymaster PM1215RR
Paymaster PM1220RR
Paymaster PM1244RR
Paymaster PM1330RR

There is one variety available for 1997 planting that
resistant to bromoxynil herbicides. It is marketed by
Company as Stoneville BXN-57.

Paymaster PM1330BG
Paymaster PM1560BG
Deltapine 20B
Deltapine 50B
Deltapine 90B

resistant to Roundup

Paymaster PM1560RR
Deltapine 90RR
Deltapine 5690RR
Deltapine 5415RR

has a gene which makes it
