VARIETY TRIALS OF UPLAND COTTON

We have grown a cotton variety trial at AREC, Jay for the last 12 years to
determine those varieties best adapted to this area. Variety trial results for
1991 and averages over several years are included in this report. Also included
are results from variety trials grown in Santa Rosa, Calhoun, and Jackson coun-
ties and NFREC, Quincy in Gadsden County, as well as variety trials grown in
Fairhope, Brewton, Headland, and Monroeville, Alabama and Tifton, Plains, and
Midville, Georgia. From comparison of these reports, one should be able to
determine the cotton variety best adapted to a general area.

EXPLANATION OF DATA
Harvest of Seed Cotton

Tests at AREC, Jay, Davis Farm, Santa Rosa, Fairhope, Brewton, Headland,
Monroeville, Tifton, Plains, and Midville were harvested by a mechanical spind-
le picker. Tests at Calhoun, NFREC, Quincy (Gadsden) were harvested by hand.
Average yield of seed cotton was determined for each variety at each location.

Lint Percentage

Seed cotton samples from each variety were ginned on a 10-saw gin. Lint
percentage was calculated by dividing weight of lint by weight of unginned seed
cotton.

Yield of Lint

Lint yield was determined by multiplying the lint percentage by the yield
of seed cotton. Lint yield from Florida tests was determined by multiplying
the yield of seed cotton by 0.38, an average lint percentage figure.

Fiber Properties

Length. For Alabama tests, this is the fiber length measured with the HVI
instrument and approximatesclasser's staple. For Georgia tests, this is the fiber
length measured with the Digital Fibrograph. The 2.5% S.L. is the length in
inches and approximatesclasser's staple; 50% S.L. is length in inches of the test
fiber specimen spanned by 50% of the fiber scanned.

Strength. A measure of the fiber strength of a bundle of fiber measured
with the two jaws holding the fiber bundle separated by 1/8 inch, expressed in
grams force per tex. Tex is a size measurement of the fiber bundle expressed as
the mass, in millimeters, of 1 meter of the fiber filaments. The data are given
as the force, in grams, needed to break this bundle; also noted in Georgia data
as T1. The higher the number the stronger the fiber.

Elongation (El). A measure of the percentage stretch before the fibers
break.

Micronaire. This measures the fineness of the cotton fibers taken from the
ginned lint. The smaller the micronaire reading, the finer and/or more immature
the fibers. The desirable range of micronaire is 3.5 to 4.9.

Uniformity or Uniformity Ratio (UR). Ratio of 50% S.L. to 2.5% S.L.

Earliness

Where more than one harvest was made, earliness is reported as the percen-
tage of the total yield harvested at the first picking.

Fusarium Wilt

Reaction of varieties to Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum was evaluated at
the Plant Breeding Unit, Tallassee, Alabama. The varieties were grown in a field
with a high natural incidence of the fusarium wilt organism. Severity of the
disease varies from year to year and also within the experimental area in the
same year. Therefore, several years' data are necessary to realistically
characterize a variety's wilt reaction. Stoneville 825 has consistently shown a
high incidence of wilt.

Results

AREC, Jay. Forty cotton varieties were tested in a single trial replicated
4 times in 1991 on Red Bay sandy loam to determine yield. All varieties were
planted 16 May at the rate of 20 lbs/acre acid delinted seed. A preplant applica-
tion of 250 lbs/acre 8-24-24 was disked into the soil along with Treflan and
Vernam. The stand was thinned to 3-4 plants/foot of row. Ammonium nitrate was
applied as a top-dressing at 200 lbs/acre plus 7 lbs/acre nitrogen from urea.
The plots were harvested 5 November. No supplemental potash or water was applied.

Yields were good for most varieties. The overall mean for the test was 1322
lbs/acre. Data on yield at AREC, Jay in 1991 along with 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-
year average yields are shown in Table 1. The highest yielding variety of the
varieties grown 3 years was KC-311; the highest yielding variety of
varieties grown 6 years was Deltapine 90. To get the best performance from
Deltapine 90, care must be taken to prevent excessive growth. A common error is
to over fertilize. On the heavier soils in Florida, nitrogen application should
not exceed 50-60 lbs/acre, otherwise, excessive plant growth and poor fruiting
will result. Pix, a growth regulator, was applied to this test 2 times, otherwise,
Deltapine 90 would have made excessive growth and yield would have been even less.
Highest yield in 1991 was from KC-311 which does not grow as tall and rank as
Deltapine 90. KC-311 yielded 1540 lbs lint/acre.

Statewide Test. Data on yield of several cotton varieties grown at 4 loca-
tions in Northwest Florida are presented in Table 2. Tests in Jackson and
Okaloosa counties were never planted because of excessive rainfall. The highest
yielding variety from the 4-location average was Deltapine 51 followed closely by
McNair 220, and Deltapine 50. The highest yielding variety from the two Santa Rosa
location average was Stoneville 506 followed closely by Deltapine 50 and Deltapine
51.

Santa Rosa County Test. Data on yield of forty cotton varieties at two Santa
Rosa County locations is presented in Table 3. The highest yielding variety grown
on the Davis Farm was a hybrid, Seed Source 195 from the breeding program of Dr.
John Green of Leland, Mississippi. Second highest yielding variety was Deltapine
5690, a new release from Delta and Pine Land Seed Company. The highest yielding
variety grown on the AREC farm was KC-311 followed closely by McNair 220 and
Deltapine 51. The highest yielding variety from the 2-location average was Seed
Source 195 followed by KC-311 and Sure Grow 1001.

New Strains Test. Data on yield of several new strains grown in a test at
AREC, Jay are presented in Table 4. Of the new cotton strains, GA88-88 was highest
in yield. Yields were good with an overall mean of 1268 lbs lint/acre.

Climatological data for the Agricultural Research and Education Center, Jay
for 1991 are shown in Table 5. The AREC, Jay climatological gathering location
is an official weather station.

Alabama Tests. Data on yield and other characteristics of cotton varieties
grown at Fairhope, Alabama in 1991 are presented in Table 6. The highest yielding
variety in 1991 was Deltapine 5690. The highest yielding variety of varieties
grown 3 years was Deltapine 51 followed closely by Sure Grow 1001.

Data on yield and other characteristics of cotton varieties grown at Brewton,
Alabama in 1991 are presented in Table 7. The highest yielding variety in 1991
was Deltapine 5415. The highest yielding variety of varieties grown 3 years was
Hyperformer HS46.

Data on yield and other characteristics of cotton varieties grown at Headland,
Alabama in 1991 are presented in Table 8. The highest yielding variety in 1991 was
Hyperformer HS46. The highest yielding variety of varieties grown 3 years was also
Hyperformer HS46.

Data on yield and other characteristics of cotton varieties grown at Monroe-
ville, Alabama in 1991 are presented in Table 9. The highest yielding variety in
1991 was KC-311. The highest yielding variety of varieties grown 3 years was also
KC-311.

Data from the fusarium wilt test at Tallassee, Alabama showing performance
of commonly grown varieties are presented in Table 10. Rowden is the susceptible
variety and Auburn 56 is the resistant variety. This table is for 1991 only. The
data in Table 11 presents the average performance of commonly grown varieties
over a period of years in the fusarium wilt test at Tallassee. Rowden is not
shown as the susceptible check variety but its average wilt percentage over 15
years was 97.

Georgia Tests. Data on yield and other characteristics of cotton varieties
grown in Tifton, GA (Tables 12, 13, 14); Plains, GA (Tables 15, 16, 17); Midville,
GA (Tables 18, 19, 20) are presented for your perusal. Of special interest might
be Table 14 which presents data on high quality (long and strong fibers with
desirable micronaire) varieties that might be grown in this area.

Production Costs. The estimated costs of producing an acre of cotton in
North Florida and break-even prices are presented in Table 21.

Recommended Varieties. Varieties recommended by the University of Florida,
IFAS, Florida Extension Service that should yield well under normal conditions
are as follows:

*Deltapine 51 and Chembred 1135 have been in the Florida cotton variety test for
2 years. However, they have performed well in these tests and in commercial
fields and are therefore included provisionally in the recommended variety test.

**To get the best performance from Deltapine 90, care must be taken to prevent
excessive growth. A common error is to over fertilize. On the heavier soils,
N application should not exceed 50 lbs/acre unless you have a history of
Deltapine 90 performance on the soil. If too much N is applied, excessive
plant growth and poor fruiting will result.

***Stoneville 825 is more susceptible to fusarium wilt than any other variety on
the recommended list and should not be planted on land with a history of
fusarium wilt.

If cotton follows soybean or peanut, N fertilization should be 25-30 Ibs/acre
less than when following a non-legume.
