Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Summer Annual Grasses,
Summer Legumes, and Grain Sorghum

Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to
convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2.

Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Trial 1:
Eleven grasses were included in this trial in 1994. Bahiagrasses, rhodesgrass,
and Paspalum atratum were planted on 22 April 92 and rooted plants of all others
except Tifton 85 bermudagrass were set on 23 April 92. Tifton 85 was set on 14
April 93. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult).
An application of 400 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 30
March 94. Ammonium nitrate at 200 pounds per acre was applied on 3 June, 19 July,
and 18 August 94. Harvests were obtained on 23 May, 22 June, 18 July, 16 August,
and 12 September 94. Yields of dry matter are given in Table 3 and show Tifton 18
bahiagrass to have the highest average yield at 11,130 pounds per acre; however,
this was not significantly higher than the yield for Tifton 9.

Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Trial 2:
This trial contained old plots of Florakirk bermudagrass and Tifton 9 bahiagrass
which had been established for a number of years. It also included plots of Red
River crabgrass established on plots in the trial area which had previously con-
tained other grasses. The Florakirk was set in the late summer of 1986, and
Tifton 9 was planted on 17 May 88. Red River was planted on 9 May 94. Red River
was seeded on prepared seedbeds at 10 pounds of seed per acre and in the double-
seed treatment at 20 pounds of seed per acre. Red River was also overseeded on
Florakirk plots and on old volunteer crabgrass plots at 10 pounds of seed per
acre. The soil was a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic Paleudult). An application of 300
pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 6 May 94. Ammonium nitrate
was applied at 200 pounds per acre on 19 July and 18 August 94 and at 100 pounds
per acre on 16 September 94. Highest yields of dry matter (9,960 pounds per acre)
were obtained from Tifton 9 bahiagrass. Yield data are presented in Table 4.

Summer Annual Grasses:
Thirty entries of summer annual grasses were tested in 1994. This trial was locat-
ed on a Dothan fine sandy loam soil (Plinthic Paleudult). The trial was planted on
5 May 94. This was somewhat later than usual. An application of 350 pounds per acre
of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 2 May 94. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200
pounds per acre on19 July and 18 August and at 100 pounds per acre on 19 Sept. 94.
Harvests were obtained on 1 July, 11 Aug., 9 Sept., and 6 Oct. 94. The weather was
relatively wet during the summer (Table 2) and, in general, the sorghum crosses
made higher yields than the millets. Yield data are presented in Table 5.

Summer Legumes:
Five entries of summer legumes were tested in 1994. The trial was located on an
Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult). This trial was planted on 27 June
94. An application of 400 pounds per acre of an 0-30-15 fertilizer was made on
10 June 94. Harvests were obtained on 12 September and 24 October. Flamingo hairy
indigo yielded 5100 pounds per acre dry matter to lead the trial.Yield data are
presented in Table 6.

Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 45 grain sorghum hybrids and one grain millet were planted in a
replicated trial in 1994 on a Dothan sandy loam to determine yield, heading date,
head type, disease reaction, lodging, height, and bird depredation. All hybrids
were planted 3 May at a seeding rate of 10 seed per foot of row (8-12 lbs. seed/A
depending on seed size) in rows 3 feet apart. A preplant application of 250 Ibs/A
8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 300 lbs/A ammonium nitrate was applied as a
topdressing on 13 June. A preemergence application of 1 lb atrazine and 4 lbs
propachlor/A controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except morningglory. Grain
was harvested 1 September and dried to 12% moisture before weighing. Precipitation
at WFREC, Jay is shown in Table 7.

Yields were good for most hybrids with a test average of 6,244 lbs/A grain. The
lowest yield in the test was 4,695 lbs/A grain. The lowest yield in 1993, 5,810
Ibs/A, was higher than in 1994. Rainfall was 34.49" (Table 7) from 3 May through
31 August. The 46-year average for the time period at WFREC, Jay is 26.40". On
average in 1994, grain sorghum hybrids yielded 32 bu/A less than average corn
grain yield.

There was no lodging or bird depredation. Leaf diseases were considerably more
severe than in 1993 (primarily Anthracnose, Colletotrichum gramincola) and many
plots were completely dead at harvest on 1 September. The abundance of rainfall
probably accounted for the higher incidence of leaf diseases. There was, however,
no preharvest seed sprouting. The entry of grain millet produced no seed at Jay
and is not noted on the entry list. Apparently the rains fell at just the right
time to prevent pollination of seed heads.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 8. The
highest yielding hybrids in the test were Hyperformer HSC Wings and Northrup-
King Savanna 5 with 8,131 Ib/A grain. These were followed by Deltapine G-1711
with 7,647 Ibs grain and Hyperformer HSC Cherokee and Cargill 737 with 7,357
lbs/A grain. Ten of the 45 grain sorghum hybrids produced more than 7,000 lbs/A
grain (about 117 bu/A).

Two-, three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at WFREC, Jay
are presented in Table 9. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over two years was
Deltapine G-1711 with 7,938 lbs/A; over three years was Deltapine G-1711 with
7,519 lbs/A; over four years was Hyperformer 1330DR with 7,873 lbs/A; and over
five years was Hyperformer 1330DR with 8,293 lbs/A grain.

Grain Sorghum Marianna;
Two plantings of grain sorghum hybrids were made at NFREC, Marianna in 1994 on
Chipola loamy sand. The early planting of 45 hybrids was made 18 April. The late
planting of 42 hybrids was made 26 July. The April planting was irrigated twice
for a total of 1.5" and the July planting was irrigated only once for a total of
1". Precipitation for NFREC, Marianna is presented in Table 10. Data on yield and
other agronomic characteristics from the April planting are presented in Table 11.
The highest yielding hybrid was Triumph TR826 with 5,241 Ibs grain followed by
DeKalb DK54 with 5,146 lbs/A grain. The mean yield of the test was 4,014 lbs/A.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics of the July planting are pre-
sented in Table 12. The highest yielding hybrid was Deltapine G-1711 with 3,662
Ibs/A followed by Hyperformer HSC Wings with 3,576 lbs/A. The mean yield of the
test was 2,268 Ibs/A grain.

Yields from the April planting at NFREC, Marianna in 1992, 1993, 1994, and two-
and three-year average yields are presented in Table 13. The highest yielding
hybrid averaged over two years was DeKalb X-176 (DeKalb DK-54) followed by DeKalb
DK-60 and DeKalb X-274. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over three years was
Northrup-King Savanna 5 followed by Hyperformer HSC Wings and Triumph Two-80-D.

The average yield of the grain sorghum hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna in
1994 are presented in Table 14. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of
the two locations was Northrup-King Savanna 5 followed by Hyperformer HSC Wings
and Deltapine G-1711. The overall mean yield for the two test locations was
5,130 lbs/A grain.

Table 15 lists the sources of seed for the 1994 grain sorghum and annual forage
tests grown at WFREC, Jay and NFREC, Marianna.
