Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Summer Annual Grasses,
Clovers on Sod, and Grain Sorghum

L. S. Dunavin, H. A. Peacock, D. W. Gorbett

Warm-Season Perennial Grasses:
Two trials were conducted. The first trial contained an experimental bermudagrass
and Tifton 9 bahiagrass which had been established for several years. It also in-
cluded volunteer grass which grew in old plots which had contained other bermuda-
grasses in earlier years. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil
(Rhodic Paleudult). An application of 600 pounds per acre of 4-12-12 fertilizer
was made on April 16, 1993. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre
on June 8 and August 10 and at 100 pounds per acre on July 9, 1993. One treatment
of the experimental bermudagrass had a double rate of ammonium nitrate at the
August application. The old plots in which the volunteer grasses grew were roto-
vated on April 14, 1993 and Tomahawk indiangrass and Bison big bluestem were
seeded. These grsases did not germinate. The plots were allowed to grow up in
volunteer grasses. Crabgrass predominated with some Setaria sp., bahiagrass, and
miscellaneous material.

Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to
convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2, and data
for the first of the warm-season grass trials are presented in Table 3.

The second warm-season perennial grass trial contained twelve entries. Seeds of
the four bahiagrasses, Callide rhodesgrass, and Paspalum plicatulum were planted
on April 22, 1992,and rooted plants of all the rest except volunteer and Tifton
85 were set on April 23, 1992. Tifton 85 bermudagrass was set on April 14, 1993
and "volunteer" was allowed to volunteer. It was mostly crabgrass. The soil was
an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 600 pounds per
acre of 4-12-12 fertilizer was made on April 16, 1993 and ammonium nitrate was
applied at 200 pounds per acre on June 8 and at 100 pounds per acre on July 9
and August 12, 1993. Tifton 85 probably did not have enough time to become es-
tablished well enough to be harvested as soon as it was. Better results are
expected from it next year. Data for this trial are presented in Table 4. The
relatively low yields from the bermudagrasses and limpograss may indicate that
not enough material was used at setting. Weeds were quite competitive in 1992
and to some extent in 1993.

Summer Annual Grasses:
Twenty-two entries of summer annual grasses were tested in 1993. The trial was
located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult). The trial was planted
on April 12, 1993. An application of 600 pounds per acre of 4-12-12 fertilizer
was made on April 7. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May
18, July 8, and August 12, 1993. Harvests were made on June 10, July 8, August
10, and September 9, 1993. Most of the millets had good stands; AFC1001 did not
have quite as good a stand as the other millets. Among the sorghum X sudangrass
hybrids, SX-17 had a particularly poor stand, and this was reflected in the yield.
Data for yield and maturity are presented in Tables 5 and 6.

tAssociate Professor of Agronomy, Professor and Center Director, AREC, Jay,
respectively, and Professor, AREC, Marianna.

Clovers On Sod:
Eight clovers were planted on December 1, 1992 on a Tifton 78 bermudagrass sod
located on a Tifton sandy loam soil (Plinthic Paleudult). Data for the pure clov-
er forage yields were presented in Jay, AREC Research Report WF93-4. The warm-
season yields of the grass plus the residual clover yields were obtained in June,
July, August, and September of 1993. Fertilizer for this portion of the study
included 300 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer applied on May 25, 1993,
and ammonium nitrate at 100 pounds per acre on July 9 and August 18, 1993. Data
for total forage yields and estimated clover contents are presented in Table 7.
Although there was a considerable difference in the average total forage yield,
the variability resulted in no statistically significant difference.

Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 59 grain sorgum hybrids and one grain millet were planted in a
replicated trial in 1993 on an Orangeburg sandy loam to determine yield, head-
ing date, head type, disease reaction, lodging, height, and bird depredation.
All hybrids were planted April 30 at a seeding rate of 10 seed per foot of row
(8-12 lbs seed/A depending on seed size) in rows 3 feet apart. A preplant
application of 250 lbs/A 8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 300 lbs/A ammonium
nitrate was applied as a topdressing June 9. A preemergence application of 1 Ib
atrazine and 4 lbs propachlor/A controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except
morningglory. Soil insect control consisted of 20 lbs/A Counter 15G applied in a
band 6 inches under the row prior to planting. Grainwas harvested August 19 and
dried to 12% moisture before weighing. Precipitation at AREC, Jay is shown in
Table 8.

Yields were good for most hybrids with a test average of 6,980 Ibs/A grain. The
lowest yield in the test was 5,810 lbs/A grain. The lowest yield in 1992 was
(4,070 lbs/A) considerably less than the lowest yield in 1993. Rainfall was
14.16 inches (Table 8) from April 30 through August 18. The 4'-year average for
this time period at AREC, Jay is slightly more than 26 inches. There was no
lodging or bird depredation. Leaf diseases (primarily Anthracnose, Colletotrichum
graminicola), were less severe than 1992 and probably accounts for the higher
yield in 1993. Yields were very good considering the apparent lack of rainfall
during the growing period.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 9. The
highest yielding hybrids in the test were Cargill 837 and Triumph Two 80-D with
8,710 Ibs/A grain followed by DeKalb DK-58, Conlee AFC FFR321DR, Deltapine G-1616,
Deltapine G-1711, and Hyperformer 1330DR with 8,230 lbs/A grain. The mean yield
for the test was 6,980 lbs/A (about 125 bu/A). The corn hybrid test at AREC, Jay
averaged 20 bu/A under the same set of environmental conditions.

Two-, three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at AREC, Jay
are presented in Table 10. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over two years
was Hyperformer 1330DR with 7,690 lbs/A; over three years was DeKalb DK-54 with
8,620 lbs/A; over four years Hyperformer 1330DR with 8,560 lbs/A; and over five
years was Hyperformer 1330DR with 8,440 Ibs/A grain.

Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of grain sorghum hybrids were made at NFREC, Marianna in 1993, on
Chipola loamy sand. The early planting of 60 hybrids was made April 19. The late
planting was made in August and was killed by an October 31 freeze before grain
maturity. The April planting was irrigated 5 times (5.2 inches total). The April

- 2-

planting was harvested August 4 and 5. Precipitation for NFREC, Marianna is pre-
sented in Table 11. Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics from the
April planting are presented in Table 12. The highest yielding hybrid from the
April planting was Hyperformer HSC Wings with 5,862 Ibs/A followed by DeKalb
DK-58 with 5,723 lbs/A grain. The mean yield for the test was 4,327 Ibs/A.

Yields from the April planting at NFREC, Marianna in 1991, 1992, 1993, and two-
and three-year average yields are presented in Table 13. The highest yielding
hybrid averaged over two years was DeKalb X-274 followed by DeKalb X-275 and
George Warner ASA7876. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over three years
was Northrup King Savanna 5 followed by DeKalb DK-54 (X-176) and Hyperformer
HSC Wings.

The average yield of the grain sorghum hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna
are presented in Table 14. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of the
two location was DeKalb DK-58 followed by Hyperformer HSC Wings. The overall
mean yield for the two test locations was 5,660 lbs/A grain (101 bu/A).

Table 15 lists the sources of seed for the 1993 grain
forage tests grown at AREC, Jay and NFREC, Marianna.
