Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Grain Sorghum,
Summer Annual Grasses, Alfalfa, and Summer Legumes

L. S. Dunavin, H. A. Peacock, D. W. Gorbett

Warm-Season Perennial Grasses:
This year this trial only included an experimental bermudagrass at two
fertility levels and Tifton 9 bahiagrass. Stands of other bermudagrasses pre-
viously included had deteriorated to the point that they were eliminated from
the trial. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult).
An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on May 6,
1992. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on June 18 and on July
27, 1992. One treatment of the experimental bermudagrass had a double rate of
ammonium nitrate at each date of application. The latter treatment produced
10,540 pounds per acre of dry matter compared with 8,730 pounds for Tifton 9
bahiagrass and 6,330 pounds for the other bermudagrass treatment (LSD t .05 =
1,350 pounds).

Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like
to convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2, and
data for the warm-season perennial grasses are presented in Table 3.

Summer Annual Grasses:
Nine sorghum X sudangrass and sorgo X sudangrass hybrids and seven millets
were included in this trial. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic
Paleudult). An application of 500 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made
prior to planting. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 22
and July 27, 1992 and at 100 pounds per acre on September 10, 1992. The trial was
planted on April 9, 1992 and harvested on June 10, July 15, August 25, and Septem-
ber 25, 1992. Dry weather followed by wet weather presented some problems. Data
for yield and maturity are presented in Tables 4 and 5.

Alfalfa:
Five of an original planting of 12 alfalfa varieties were observed in 1992.
No harvests had been anticipated for 1992; however, these five varieties had some
residual plots which still looked rather good in early 1992. The original planting
was made on October 28, 1987 on an Orangeburg loamy sand (Typic Paleudult). No
fertilizer has been added since August 20, 1991. Harvests were made on June 26,
July 28, August 28, and October 14, 1992. These yields are only the averages of
those plots still remaining, and no statistical analyses were made. By the last
harvest, no variety had more than two of an original four replications still pro-
ducing. The last harvest was the twenty-fifth harvest since the trial was planted.
Data are presented in Table 6.

Summer Legumes:
Two entries of Stylosanthes and one each of hairy indigo, alyceclover,
Aeschynomene, and Desmodium were planted on July 17, 1992 on an Orangeburg sandy
loam (Typic Paleudult). Prior to planting, an application of 300 pounds per acre

tAssociate Professor of Agronomy, Professor and Center Director, AREC, Jay, respec-
tively, and Professor, AREC, Marianna.

of 0-30-15 fertilizer was made. The planting was probably a little later than
preferred, and some heavy rains came a few days after planting. Only hairy indigo
had a real good stand with a fair stand of alyceclover. The Aeschynomene stand was
not very good, and the Stylosanthes and Desmodium stands were poor to practically
non-existent, respectively. Only one harvest was obtained. This was on October
14, 1992, and data are presented in Table 7.

Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 48 grain sorghum hybrids were tested in a replicated trial in
1992 on an Orangeburg sandy loam to determine yield, heading date, head type,
lodging, disease reaction, height, and bird depredation. All hybrids were planted
April 4 at a seeding rate of 12 seed per foot of row (8 to 12 Ibs seed/A depending
on seed size) in rows 3-feet apart. A preplant application of 250 lbs/A 8-24-24
was disked into the soil and 300 lbs/A ammonium nitrate was applied as a topdressing
on May 27. A preemergence application of 1 lb of atrazine and 4 Ibs of propachlor/A
controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except morningglory. Soil insect control
consisted of 20 lbs/A Counter 15G applied in a band 6 inches under the row prior
to planting. Grain was harvested August 20 and dried to 12% moisture before weigh-
ing. Precipitation at AREC, Jay is shown in Table 8.

Yields were good for most hybrids with a test average of 6,020 Ibs/A grain.
The lowest yield in the test was 4,070 lbs/A grain. The lowest yield in 1991
(6,050 lbs/A) was higher than the average yield in 1992. Rainfall was more than
adequate to make an excellent yield but was not very well distributed. There were
25.06 inches of rainfall (Table 8) from April 4 through August 19. The 44-year
average for this time period at AREC, Jay is 31.23 inches. Leaf diseases (primarily
Anthracnose, Colletotrichum graminicola), was more prevalent than in 1991 and did
considerably more leaf damage, even though the test was planted in April. The head
phase was also present and some heads did not fill out well. Consequently, yield
was not as high as would have been expected based on planting date and rainfall.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 9.
The highest yielding hybrid in the test was DeKalb X-176,. an experimental hybrid,
with 8,080 lbs/A followed by DeKalb X-275, also an experimental hybrid, with 7,550
Ibs/A grain. Among the hybrids available for farmer planting, Deltapine G-1616 was
highest in yield with 7,360 Ibs/A, followed by George Warner W-902-W with 7,260
lbs/A, and Hyperformer 1330 DR with.7,150 lbs/A grain. The mean yield for the
test was 6,020 lbs/A (about 106 bu/A). There was no bird depredation this year
and very little lodging. Two-, three-, four, and five-year average yields of
hybrids grown at AREC, Jay are presented in Table 10. The highest yielding hybrids
averaged over two years were DeKalb X-176 and George Warner W-902-W; over three
years was Hyperformer 1330 DR; over four years was Hyperformeir-1330 DR; over five.
years was Hyperformer 1330 DR.

Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of grain sorghum hybrids were made at AREC, Marianna in 1992,
on Chipola loamy sand. The early-planting of 49 hybrids was made April 14 and the
late planting of the same 49 hybrids was made July 15. Both plantings: were irrigated.
Fertilizer for the early-planted test included 380 lbs/A 20-10-10 plus minor elements
applied April 27 and 350 lbs/A 13-13-13 applied May 19. Fertilizer for the late-
planted test included 350 lbs/A 13-13-13 applied July 16, 400 lbs/A 20-10-10 applied
July 29, and 150 lbs/A ammonium nitrate applied August 4. The early test was har-
vested July 29 and 30 and the late test was harvested November 17. Precipitation
for AREC, Marianna is presented in Table 11. Data on yield and other agronomic
characteristics from the early and late plantings (April and July) are presented

in Tables 12 and 13. The highest yielding hybrids from the early planting (Table
12) was Northrup King Savanna 5 followed by George Warner W-917-E. The highest
yielding hybrid from the late planting (Table 13) was Agrigenetics 611E followed
by DeKalb X-275.

Yields for the early (April) planting at AREC, Marianna in 1990, 1991, 1992,
and the two- and three-year average yields are presented in Table 14. The highest
yielding hybrid averaged over three years was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 6,266
lbs/A followed by George Warner W-876-DR with 5,496 Ibs/A grain. The highest
yielding hybrid averaged over two years was Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR 331 DR
with 6,055 lbs/A followed by Asgrow GS 712 with 5,596 lbs/A grain.

Yields for the late (July) planting at AREC, Marianna in 1990, 1991, 1992,
and the two- and three-year average yields are presented in Table 15. The highest
yielding hybrid averaged over three years was Hyperformer HSC Wings with 3,620
lbs/A followed by DeKalb DK64 with 3,613 lbs/A grain. The highest yielding hybrid
averaged over two years was DeKalb X-977 with 4,756 lbs/A followed by DeKalb
X-176 and Asgrow GS 712 with 4,300 lbs/A grain.

The average yield of the grain sorghum hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna
are presented in Table 16. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of the two
locations was DeKalb X-176 with 6,460 lbs/A followed by DeKalb X-275 and Hyper-
former 91-HSC-17 with 6,140 Ibs/A grain. All are experimental hybrids. The highest
yielding hybrid from the average of the two locations which is available for
farmer planting was George Warner W-902-W with 6,060 lbs/A grain. The overall mean
yield for the two test locations was 5,280 Ibs/A grain (94 bu/A).
