Variety Trials of Summer Annual Grasses, Sorghum for Silage, Grain
Sorghum, Alfalfa, Various Warm-Season Legumes, and Bermudagrass.

Summer Annual Grasses:
The summer annual grass trial contained twelve pearl millets, eleven sorghum
X sudangrass hybrids, and two Japanese millets in 1988. The trial was planted on
March 29, 1988 on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult). Rows were
spaced three feet apart. Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of
those who would like to convert to metric units. Both types of millet were seeded
at 10 pounds of seed per acre, and sorghum X sudangrass was seeded at 20 pounds
per acre. An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was applied
and disked into the soil on March 24, 1988. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200
pounds per acre on May 10 and at 100 pounds per acre on June 8, July 13, and
August 15. The early portion of the season was very dry, and the late portion was
very wet. Climatological data are presented in Table 2. Harvests were made on
June 7, July 5, August 15, and October 7. Data for yield, height, disease, and
maturity are presented in Tables 3, 4, and 5.

Sorghum for Silage:
The silage trial contained six sorghum varieties in 1988. It was planted on
March 29 on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at a seeding rate of
10 pounds per acre. Rows were on a 3-foot spacing. An application of 400 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was applied and disked into the soil on March 24,
1988. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 10 and again on
July 28. The first harvest was conducted for all varieties on July 25 with all
varieties in about the late dough stage. The second harvest occurred on October
24 for FS-5 which matured early and on November 9 for the rest of the varieties.
Data on yield, lodging, height, and disease are presented in Tables 6, 7, and 8.

Alfalfa:
Twelve alfalfa entries were included in the 1988 trial. These were planted
on October 28,. 1987 on an Orangeburg loamy sand soil (Typic Paleudult). An
application of 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer and 4 pounds per acre
of boron was made on October 1, 1987. Applications of 200 pounds per acre of 60%
muriate of potash were made on April 27 and on July 25, 1988. Harvests were made
on April 26, June 16, July 19, August 17, and September 21. Yield data are
presented in Table 9.

Warm-Season Legumes:
Three entries each of alyceclover and hairy indigo and one each of Aeschynomene,
Stylosanthes, Desmodium, velvetbean, Kobe lespedeza, and Korean lespedeza were
included in a warm-season legume trial in 1988. The trial was planted on July 14,
1988 on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult). This was a very late date
for planting lespedeza. An application of 300 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer
was disked into the soil on July 11, 1988. The growing season for this trial was
very wet with 38.05 inches of rain during the time from planting to harvest.
Precipitation was recorded on 43 of the 83 days from planting to harvest. The
harvest was made on October 5, and data are presented in Table 10.

Bermudagrass:
This trial included an experimental bermudagrass which was set in the late
summer of 1986 and a second treatment of the grass which was set on March 25,
1987. Tifton 78, Tifton 44, and Cane Patch were set in the late summer of 1986.
Tifton 9 bahiagrass was included in the trial and was planted on May 17, 1988
during a drouth. During the trial it only constituted 5-10% of the forage with
weedy volunteers producing the rest. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy
loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24
fertilizer was applied on March 23, 1988 and again on August 26, 1988. Ammonium
nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 12, June 30, and July 28 and
at 100 pounds per acre on August 26. The Tifton 9 bahia has become rather well
established and in the warm weather present on January 12, 1989 is green and
growing. Data for this trial are presented in Table 11.

Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 71 grain sorghums were tested in a single replicated trial in
1988 on a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic Paleudult) to determine yield, height,
heading date, head type,, lodging, disease reaction, and bird predation. All
cultivars were planted April 14 at a seeding rate of 12 seed per foot of row (8
-to 12 lbs. seed/A depending on seed size) in rows 3-feet apart. A preplant
application of 500 lbs/A of 8-24-24 was disked into the soil and .200 lbs/A
ammonium nitrate was applied as a top dressing. A preemergence application of
1 lb. of atrazine and 4 lbs. of propachlor per acre controlled weedy grasses and
broadleaves except nutsedge and morningglory. Soil insect control consisted of
20 lbs/A Furadan applied in a band 6 inches deep under the row before planting.
Grain was harvested August 10 and dried to 12% moisture before weighing.

Yields were poor for all cultivars because of some preharvest seed sprouting,
bird depredation, and drouth during pollination and seed filling. The season
alternated between extremely wet and extremely dry. From April 1 through August
14, there were 26.6 inches of rainfall. The 40-year average for this time period
at AREC, Jay is 30.8 inches. April was dry with only two rains of 1 inch or more;
May was extremely dry with only 0.7 inch the whole month. June could be considered
normal when only the total rainfall is considered; however, 5.61 inches of the total
7.64 inches fell in one 6-hour period. July rainfall was below normal but the first
part of August was extremely wet with 8.00 inches during the first 11 days. Leaf
diseases were heavy (primarily anthracnose, Colletotrichum graminicola) and could
account for part of the lack of yield.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 12.
The highest yielding hybrid in the test was Conlee AFC865 with 6680 Ibs/A followed
by Funks HW7269 with 6100 lbs/A grain. Yields were at least 1500 to 2000 Ibs/A
less than usual. Two-, three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids
grown at AREC, Jay are presented in Table 13. The highest yielding hybrid averaged
over five years was Northrup King NK2660. The highest yielding hybrid averaged
over three years was Funks G1711. The highest yielding hybrid averaged.over two
years was Northrup King Savanna 5.

Grain Sorghum Marianna.
Two plantings of commercial grain sorghum hybrids were made at AREC, Marianna
in 1988. The early planting of 63 hybrids was made April 4 and the late planting.
of the same 63 hybrids was made July 29. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilizer
for the early-planted trial included 350 lbs/acre of 20-10-18 preplant incorporated,
400 lbs/acre of 13-13-13 applied May 3 and 200 lbs/acre of ammonium nitrate on May
12. Fertilizer for the late-planted trial included 300 Ibs/acre 14-14-14 postplanting

on July 25, 350 lbs/acre 13-13-13 on August 8, and 200 lbs/acre ammonium nitrate
on August 10. Yield and other data from the April and July trials are presented
in Tables 14 and 15, respectively. Average yields from grain sorghum cultivars
grown in 1986, 1987, and 1988 from April planting dates are presented in Table
16. The rainfall data for Marianna for the 1988 season are presented in Table 17.
