Variety Trials Of Several Forage Grasses, Temperate Corn, and Grain Sorghum.

Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to convert to metric
units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2 for Jay and in Table 16 for Marianna.

Warm-season perennial grasses.
In 1998, there were nine warm-season grasses in this trial. Three plots in each replication which had
held grasses in 1996 were fallowed. Cherokee red clover was overseeded over all plots on 10
December 1997. These were relatively old plots of grass. The bahiagrasses and Suerte atra
paspalum were planted on 22 April 92, and rooted plants of all others except Tifton 85 and Coastal
bermudagrass were set on 23 April 92. Tifton 85 was set on 14 April 93, and Coastal was set on 18
April 94. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of
300 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer was made on 9 Jan. 98, and an application of 400 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 18 May 98. Gypsum was applied at 125 pounds per acre on 1
July 98. Ammonium nitrate was applied to provide 50 pounds per acre ofN on 1 July, 29 July, and
27 Aug. 98. Yield data are presented in three separate tables. These are: grass only in Table 3,
clover only in Table 4, and the clover-grass combination in Table 5.

Russell bermudagrass and other grasses.
This trial included five entries ofbermudagrass and Red River crabgrass. Russell and Tifton 85
were set in 1995, and Florakirk was set in 1996. DH#1 was set in 1997, and Cd90160 was planted
in 1997. Red River was planted on 8 May 98. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam
(Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 8
May 98. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on 25 June 98 and at 100 pounds
per acre on 28 July and 27 Aug. 98. Gypsum was applied at 125 pounds per acre on 25 June 98.
Harvests were made on 27 April, 12 June, 23 July, 26 Aug., and 6 Oct. Stands were very poor for
Cd90160 bermudagrass and Red River crabgrass, and their yields were very low.
Tifton 85, Russell and Florakirk yields were very similar to those in 1997. Data are presented in
Table 6.

Suerte )alum Carostan flaccidgrass Red River crabgrass.
The trial to o, serve Suerte atra paspalum, Carostan flaccidgrass, and Red River crabgrass was
continued in 1998. This trial was planted in April, 1996 except that the annual, Red River crabgrass
was planted on 21 April 1998. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic
Paleudult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 11 May 98
and ammonium nitrate at 100 pounds per acre was applied on 5 June, 17 July, and 7 Aug.1998.
Harvests were obtained on 2 June, 7 July, 5 Aug., 9 Sept., and 9 Oct.. Data are given in Table 7
and indicate that yields were only fair. Stands for both Suerte and Carostan have deteriorated. Red
River was somewhat more productive in 1998 than in 1997; however, it still fell below expectation.

Bahiagrass cultivar trial.
A second year's data was obtained from a trial planted on 16 April 97 on a Dothan fine sandy loam
soil (Plinthic Paleudult). This trial contained six entries. An application of 300 pounds per acre of
an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 17 April 98. Ammonium nitrate at 100 pounds per acre was
applied on 18 May, 11 June, 17 July, and 7 Aug. 98. Harvests were obtained on 7 May, 5 June, 7
July, 5 Aug., 9 Sept., and 6 Oct.. Yields were considerably higher than in the establishment year.
Data are presented in Table 8.

Gamagrass.
This observation involved three ecotypes and a cultivar of Eastern gamagrass. The trial consisted of
single plants set on four-foot centers and replicated four times. Plants were set on 29 March 93 on
an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). They had developed into very large plants with most
of the forage on the outside edge of relatively large vacant centers. Fertilization in 1998 included
300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 on 25 June 98 and ammonium nitrate at 100 pounds per acre on 25
June and 7 August. This was a relatively low rate of nitrogen. Harvests were obtained on 18 June,
30 July, and 8 Sept.. The ecotypes were from Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. The cultivar 'Pete'
was released in 1988 by the USDA-SCS in cooperation with the Kansas and Oklahoma Agricultural
Experiment Stations and the USDA-ARS. Yields were higher in 1998 than in 1997. The Alabama
ecotype was again the leader by a good margin. This is somewhat surprising in view of some earlier
work done with the Alabama and Tennessee ecotypes here. Data are given in Table 9.

Summer annual grasses.
A trial containing 24 entries of summer annual grasses was conducted in 1998. It was planted on
1 April on a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic Paleudult). An application of 600 pounds per acre of a 4-
12-12 fertilizer was made on 30 March 98. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre
on 8 May and at 100 pounds per acre on 8 July and 7 August 1998. Five harvests were obtained.
These were on 26 May, 23 June, 28 July, 4 Sept., and 14 Oct.. In view of the weather, the yields
were rather surprising particularly those in June; however, following the May harvest, we had three
recordings of 0.8 inches in late May and 0.68 inches on 6 June. Harvests were obtained on 26 May,
23 June, 28 July, 4 Sept., and 14 Oct.. Data are presented in Tables 10 and 11. Four millets were
leaders this year.









Temperate corn.
Cultivars of 26 corn hybrids were planted in a replicated field trial in 1998 on a Dothan fine sandy
loam (Plinthic Paleudult) to determine yield and ear quality. All were planted on 26 March at a
seeding rate of 2 seeds per foot of row in rows three feet apart. An application of 600 pounds
per acre of 3-9-18 was made on 26 March, and 350 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate was
applied on 15 April 98. Corn was thinned on 18 May. Other normal farming practices were applied
to the experimental area. The summer was hot and dry and, irrigation was not available to the area.
Corn was harvested on 20 August, and data are presented in Tables 12 and 13. The latter table
gives multiple year averages.

Grain Sorghum Marianna
Two planting of grain sorghum were made at NFREC at Marianna in 1998 on Chipola loamy sand.
The early planting of 40 hybrids was made on April 13, and the late planting was made on July 8.
The April planting was irrigated 5 times for a total of 3.6". Data on yield and other agronomic
characteristics from the April planting are presented in Table 14. The highest yielding hybrid was
Triumph TR 82G with 4,7191bs followed by 4,6791bs/A. The mean yield of the test was
3,6211bs/A. Hot and dry weather impacted yields for the April test.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics of the July planting are presented in Table 15.
The highest yielding hybrid was Triumph TR 464 followed by Novartis Savanna 5. The mean of the
test was 2,617 lbs/A.. Anthracnose was a major disease problem on the late planting. Rainfall data
for Marianna are given in Table 16.

Grain Sorghum Jay.
A grain sorghum trial was not conducted at Jay in 1998; however, Table 17 presents several yields
and averages from work done by Dr. H.A. Peacock from 1992-1997 at WFREC, Jay.
