Cultivar Trials of Peanut and Soybean

L.S. Dunavint

Trials were conducted at WFREC, Jay in 1998 on cultivars of peanut and soybean. A
portion of the peanut data has also been included in Marianna NFREC Res. Rept. 99- 1;
however, this report includes more data.

Conversion factors from English to metric units are presented in Table 1, and
climatological data are given in Table 2.

Peanut Cultivar Trial. The peanut cultivar trial contained 25 entries and was planted on
7 May 98. The soil was a Fuquay loamy sand (Arenic Plinthic Paleudult). Fertilizer
included 700 pounds per acre of 3-9-18 on 7 May 98. An application of 800 pounds per
acre of gypsum was made on 5 June 98. Other applications included Thimet under the
peanuts at 8 oz. per 1000 feet of row, Prowl at 2.4 pints per acre, and nine applications of
fungicide at recommended rates. Virugard, which matured early, was plowed up on 8
Sept. 98 and harvested on 15 Sept. 98. Ea:ly and medium-early varieties were plowed up
on 17 Sept.98 and harvested on 24 Sept. 98. Medium varieties were plowed up on 24
Sept. 98 and harvested on 5 Oct. 98. Late varieties were plowed up on 5 Oct. 98 and
harvested on 14 Oct. 98. This trial was not irrigated. Yield data are presented in Table 3.
The highest average yield was 4290 pounds per acre and the lowest was 2070.

Soybean Cultivar Trials. Trials were conducted on Uniform Groups VI, VII, and VIII.
Group VI had 17 entries, Group VII had 15 entries, and Group VII had 17 entries. These
trials were planted with a plot planter on 4 June 98. These were 3-row plots with rows 25
feet long on 36-inch spacing. The soil was a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic Paleudult).
Fertilizer included 350 pounds per acre of 5-10-15. These trials were not irrigated. The
area was plowed on 6 July 98. Herbicides were applied pre-plant on 3 June 98 and on
23 July 98. One application of an insecticide was required, and this was made on 24 Sep.
98. The soybeans were harvested during the fourth week of October. Data are presented
in Table 4. In general, yields were higher in Group VI. All yields were relatively low.
