Canola Cultivar Trial, 1991-1992

L. S. Dunavin1

A canola cultivar trial was conducted in 1991-1992 which included six culti-
vars planted broadcast at 8 pounds of seed per acre. These plots were planted on
November 5, 1991 on a Dothan fine sandy loam soil (Plinthic Paleudult). Prior to
planting, an application of 400 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was
disked into the soil. Sulfur was applied at 20 pounds per acre on January 27,
1992 along with 6 pounds per acre of boron. An application of 100 pounds per acre
of ammonium nitrate was made on February 11, 1992. This planting was made with
reasonably favorable soil conditions, and the soil was cultipacked following
planting. Unfortunately a flooding rain of 2.3 inches on November 21 and 0.96
inches the next day evidently resulted in some movement of seed northward out of
the plots into the alleys and reduced the stand in some plots. Corn spurry
became a severe weed problem, particularly in the plots with lower populations
of canola.

Hyola 40 had about 50% of the plants in bloom by February 19, 1992 with no
blooms on any other cultivar at that time. By mid-March most plants in all plots
had some blooms. Hyola 40 was harvested on May 4, and on May 12 and 19 the rest
were harvested. Harvest occurred during a very dry period.

Yield data are shown in Table 1 and, except for PF2886/85 and A114 are not
greatly different from the broadcast-planted yields of last year. The average
yield data for the two years are presented in Table 2. Conversion factors and
climatological data are presented in Tables 3 and 4.

The lowest temperature during the growing season was 240 F on January 21.
No cold damage was noted this year.
