GRAIN AND FORAGE SORGHUM TESTS IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA

Cooperators: R. W. Lipscomb and R. W. Wallace, North Florida Station
L. S. Dunavin and M. C. Lutrick, West Florida Station

The 1964 tests of grain and forage sorghum varieties were conducted on

Experiment Station farms at Marianna, Quincy and Jay, Florida. Four replications

of three row plots, 17 feet long were used at each location. The tests were

hand planted at a rate of 10 pounds of seed per acre on April 1 at Jay, April 21

at Marianna and May 5 at Quincy. Fertilizer applications at the time of plant-

ing were approximately 500 pounds of 4-12-12 per acre at Marianna and Quincy and

250 pounds of 8-24-24 per acre at Jay. Forty pounds of nitrogen per acre at

Marianna and 67 pounds per acre at Jay and Quincy were applied as a sidedressing.

An additional top dressing of 67 pounds per acre of nitrogen wqp applied at Jay

to.all forage types on July 24. Yields and agronomic data were taken from the

center row of each plot. No grain sorghum data were taken at Quincy due to poor

germination as a result of severe drought at planting time. The results of the

1964 grain sorghum test are given in Table 1 and the two-year summary in Table 2.

The 1964 yield data for the silage type sorghums represents two clippings

at Jay and Quincy and one at Marianna. The data for the grazing type varieties

represents four clippings at Quincy, five at Jay and one at Marianna, Differences

in dates of planting, soil and moisture conditions and interactions between these

factors have apparently had rather large effects as to the response between

locations and between varieties at the three locations. Lack of moisture at

critical times was especially damaging to forage yields at Jay and resulted in

complete failure of a grain sorghum test at Quincy. The 1964 silage type forage

sorghum summary is given in laLle 3 and the three-year summary in Table 4.

Table 5 shows the 1964 summary for the sorghum x sudangrass and p6arl millet tests,

Tables 6 and 7 give detailed forage data for the Jay station only.
